Egyptian Mau Society UK Welcome to the Egyptian Mau Society!

28/10/2021
22/08/2020

We have our Annual General Meeting on Sunday 30 August at 1400, via Zoom. Members are very welcome to join us (sorry, only virtual strawberries and cakes this year). Please contact Claire Maydon, our Secretary, if you wish to attend. We can take additions to the agenda up until 28 August. We'd love to see you, so don't be shy! Michele

30/07/2020

The rosettes and mousies were sent off to the winners of our Mau show classes today. It made me smile - cost more in postage than anything else! Obviously, most of the envelopes went overseas, so it will take a few days for them to get to you... actually, post within the UK has been slow over the last few months, so don't hold your breath. Please let us know when your parcel arrives. Thank you all for entering, I hope you enjoyed our first virtual show: best wishes, MIchele Clare, Chairman, Egyptian Mau Society.

The beautiful rosettes have arrived!

Well look what turned up in today’s post! Beautiful rosettes for our class winners - I shall pack them up with a mousie each tomorrow, then get to the Post Office to get to you. Thanks to Richardsons for making lovely rosettes, each personalised with the winner’s pet name, and in the Society colours of black, silver and green. Worth the wait!

What an amazing prize for our BiS winner Theo! Many thanks to Carolle for her kind donation ❤️

What an amazing show! Thank you to all the judges, my ASM Michèle Clare, Georgina Anderson-Keeble for designing the lovely certificates and YOU lovely people for entering all of your beautiful cats!

I (Charlotte, the show manager)usually deal with Asians, so it's been lovely to learn more about Maus. What a beautiful and cheeky breed!

Everyone should now have their certificates, the rosettes have been ordered, the mousies are ready to go, and Carolle is busy getting started on the BIS portrait. It would be lovely if the class winners could send us a picture of their cat with the prizes when they arrive so we can share them here!

That about wraps it up I think, thank you very much for having me and give all of yours cats a big squeeze from me 😻

Edited to add - The mousies I’ve donated as prizes are usually sold to raise money for cat charities and welfares. If you’d like to order one please message me Charlotte Davey

Over Best in Show - Theo (Whitney Nickel)
The epitome of a very beautiful, confident Mau breed I have had the very great pleasure of judging since June 2003. I particularly liked the cute squidgy silver primordial pouch!!

BIS Runner Up - Jo Natan (Charlot Jordan)
Ran Winner very close as the saying goes!! A fine example of the Smoke variety which I am rather partial to.

BIS Runner Up - Elli - (Jenny Mikaela Hissa)
Your Intrepid exploration , an amazing photo of a super cat in anyone's book. Such a beautiful setting for her.

Further comments in no particular order -

Noki
Looking very cute in the gold neck wear who just missed out on being in the top three.

Elli
Certainly has the worried look but also looked extremely relaxed, I doubt she has a care in the world!!

Na'or
Fine example of the Bronze variety, pictured in a wonderful setting to show off the colour to advantage.

June
This one really made me smile...such a seductive pose. Bet she knows just how to have her owner wrapped around her little paw!!

Pharaon
Indeed he is a very handsome male, pictured with his toy mouse showing he has a gentle fun side as well as a macho one.

Amelia
Darling silver kitten who looks completely chilled! Must be an absolute joy to own, I envy her owner.

Decks and Luna
The most delightful picture of Mau hugs I could almost hear their contended purrs.

Thank you so much for giving me the pleasure (as well as the very hard task) of judging the final line up. They are all a testament to your love and care. Continue to enjoy the privilege of owning this wonderful breed.

Still trying to contact Sam Brown to send Texas's certificate! It's the only one left so it would be great to get it to them before BIS!

🎉🎉 CLASS 3 RESULTS🎉🎉
Best Worried Expression
Judge - Melissa Bateson

Again, I was very flattered to be asked to judge this class. The worried expression is one of the trademark features of the Egyptian Mau breed, but it is very hard to capture in words. We stress the parallel lines of the nose and the level brow as contributory factors in the standard of points, but it is more than just these features. Everything has to be right to give the correct look. The overall shape of the head, the size and set of the ears and the distinctive facial markings. I sometimes think that ‘concerned’ is a better adjective than worried; a Mau should not look surprised, cross or terrified. I have picked the photographs that best capture the look as I understand it. This class was hard to judge!

1st: Jenny Mikaela Hissa’s Elli. Stunning clean silver girl with gorgeous green eyes. Lovely refined worried look.

2nd: Kerry Hood’s Luna. A pale silver beauty. A bit less refined, but a lovely worried look.

3rd: Dena Bracey’s Djinn. A very handsome smoke boy with a very worried look despite his dark face.

4th: Mia Asplund’s Amelia. A beautiful silver girl with a good worried expression. Slightly pinched-looking muzzle in this photo, but I love the combination of her eyes, brow and ears.

5th: Georgina Keeble-Anderson’s Cloudy. A good-looking silver girl with beautiful green eyes and good ear set giving the right worried expression.

Honourable mentions:
Cecile Einarsen’s Thalia
Michele Buss’s Thomas
Rebecca Lokke’s Bee
Lesley Szwed’s Syd
Kerry Hood’s Iggy

🎉🎉CLASS 7 RESULTS🎉🎉
Prettiest Female
Judge - Melissa Bateson

It was a huge honour to be asked to judge this class. I got my first Egyptian Maus when I moved to North Carolina in 1996 and have been smitten with the breed ever since, breeding under the cattery name/prefix New Kingdom and showing in both CFA and GCCF. Over the years I have developed a strong preference for what I want to see in a good Mau. Although I know the standard of points well, it can be hard to verbalise what I like about a particular cat. Sometimes you can have all the correct pieces, but they just don’t seem to add up. Overall look and balance are hugely important in a way that can be hard to articulate. I have done my best to explain my choices. Please bear in mind that it is very hard to judge a cat from a photo. I know from my own experience that it is possible to take very unflattering photos of beautiful cats (and possibly also vice versa if you are a clever photographer that knows what to hide). I have judged what I see.

1st: Lo**ta Sakka Amini’s June. This is an absolutely gorgeous young-looking silver Mau. She has a beautiful medium rounded wedge and the unmistakeable worried expression created by the parallel nose lines and level brow. Her body looks elegant but not extreme. Her silver colour looks clean and she has good contrast between well-space charcoal spots and pale silver ground colour. I love her!

2nd: Mia Asplund’s Spring. Another gorgeous silver girl who was a close contender in my mind for first place. Again, this cat has the classic Mau look. She has beautiful head type with the required medium rounded wedge and lovely large ears that extend the lines of the wedge. She is tall and elegant, but in no way extreme. I love her excellent clear silver colour and the strong contrast between her spots and clean pale silver ground colour. Her eye colour is the correct gooseberry green.

3rd: Susan Mulhearn’s Drift. A lovely smoke girl that, as with my top two choices, could only be a Mau. Her head type is correct and she has beautiful large ears that are reasonably well set. Two things really stood out about this girl to me. First, I loved her large eyes that display perfect rounded almond shape and good gooseberry green colour. Second, I loved her smoke colour: this cat has stunning contrast for a smoke meaning that unusually for a smoke you can see all of the correct markings on her face (mascara lines and scarab on the forehead). She possibly looks a little short-limbed in the photo, but my feeling is that this is foreshortening from the angle of the shot.

4th: Mia Asplund’s Amelia. I couldn’t leave out this flashy looking young girl. She looks as if she is still a kitten from the photo, and needs to grow into her paws meaning that she lacks a little balance at the moment. However, I suspect she will develop into a stunner. She has beautiful head type with excellent ear size and set. Her contrast is very clear with black spots on a pale silver ground colour.

5th: Louise Portsmouth’s Princess Fiona. Some people may be surprised by this choice, but I liked this young-looking female the best of all the bronzes in the class. Like the other cats I have chosen she is unmistakeably a Mau. She has a nice medium, rounded wedge with no obvious pinch or boxy muzzle. She has good sized ears with reasonable set (although I would have ideally liked them a little more widely spaced). She doesn’t have the very rich bronze of some of the other entries, but she has an attractive warm colour that is quite acceptable in the range of variation seen in this breed. Her eyes appear a good gooseberry green.

Honourable mentions that didn’t make my top five:
Eileen Clayton’s Carmen – classic Mau expression and lovely contrast.
Kerry Hood’s Luna – a lovely moderate well-balanced silver.
Bianca Hoeger’s Sunny – classic worried expression and excellent contrast.
Whitney Nickel’s Tempo – a well-balance elegant-looking Mau.

Pedigree non-Mau
Judge - Georgina Anderson Keeble

1st Lotus - Sophie Marchland
Such a fabulous faraway and noble expression on this girls green eyed gaze. Simply wow. I loved her shiny coat and gorgeous tall ears. Just stunning, she has the whole goddess-like pose off to a tee. The word superlative comes to mind. She’s also slightly raising one paw, so her owner only just captured this shot. She’s a very worthy winner and stood out from the first.

2nd Darcy - Erica Bates
Not a whole body shot, but this girl is just stunning, and totally irresistible. I loved her expression, she can obviously see something that interests her. Her ears are cupped forward and alert and she has the most enormously long whiskers. Her silver tipped fur is gorgeous and looks really soft and strokeable.

3rd Edward - Gillian Cornish
A proper lordly pose for an non-Egyptian type cat. Edward is sleek and elegant, with his tail tucked tidily around his paws. His expression is quizzical, and playful in equal measure, with his head tipped slightly to one side, as if he can hear something he’s interested in too. Absolutely loved this boy.

4th Ted - Beth Noble
I adored the gorgeous otherworldly expression on this cats face. He has fabulous blue eyes, and a ‘proper’ Egyptian type scarab across his forehead (which as a ticked tabby he would have), and lovely stripes on his legs. A stunningly handsome boy, that anyone would be proud to have in their lives.

5th Pandor - Jessica Unhv
I loved the worried expression on this cats face, not sure what they’re looking at, maybe someone is about to fill the bath tub with water, which she might not be quite so keen on, but whatever the cause, Pandor is adorable. She has beautiful red/apricot coloured fur which is glowing and glossy with obvious good health, very large white whiskers and lovely big ears. An absolute superstar.

6th Evie - Louise Portsmouth
Another blue eyed beauty. Evie has perfected the far away expression needed in a goddess, her tail is neatly tucked round to the front of her and her paws are arranged neatly together. I love her colour (lilac) it’s one of my favourite cat colours and suits her immeasurably. A very pretty girl with a calm face and attitude.

Joshy has such a displeased glare he has to be of royal blood, and obviously everyone is his slave

3rd Sarah Holden - Jak Frost
Jak is king, end of, he knows it and we should worship!

4 Julie Harling - Purrdi
Now this little girl posed so beautifully, like a serene queen.

5. Sam Brown - Texas
Very handsome boy posed in a regal stance, I believe by his enquiring look he has made a Royal request.

6.Nanntika Karlsson - Maze
Oh my goodness, look at the markings. He oozes attitude, and those fabulous ears!!

Judge - Sandra Woodley

My thanks to Michèle Clare and her team for organising this super virtual show. So lovely to see so many Maus in on place. I have to say the Warmest Bronze really give me a headache.
I didn’t judge on type but purely on colour. A couple of cats were sat in darkish area which didn’t show their colour to best advantage

1 Patrick LeCoustumer - Na’Or
He looks like he is sitting in the jungle which shows off his beautiful rich warm coppery brown colour to this lad which shows across his head shoulders legs tail and back, with
lovely clear warm brown spots

2 Isabelle Bouisson - Nefertari
Just a babe on the cat tree with her silver friend and showing a really super warm tone to her coppery brown coat with excellent contrast in his black spots

3 Gaelle Berger - Lheka
Lovely mature looking lad with a really lovely tone to his warm brown coat that shows lovely distinct rich brown spots.

4 Lesley Turner - Morse
A gorgeous lad sitting in the top of his cat tree looking more bemused than worried!! He has a lovely coat that shows dark brown. markings and spots and a lovely warm copper toned ground

5 David Garwood - Maggie
Looks like she is enjoying the sunshine which is reflecting off her lovely warm coppery brown coat that has clear brown markings

Most Athletic Mau
Judges - Clive & Helen Wicks

Thank you all for your wonderful entries, you gave us a hard time in deciding our top 5 and the ultimate winner. However, decisions had to be made so here are our results:

1st. Aimo & Fox - Yvonne Wieg
They both displayed such athleticism and speed, one of the boys should surely be renamed MaUsain Bolt.

2nd. Nefi - Megan Stafford
We came to the conclusion that Nefi is only part Mau, as she obviously has Spider woman somewhere in her ancestry.

3rd. Ezra - Katie McCord
Quite the acrobat! Ezra’s mid-air somersault was particularly stupendous.

4th. The Monkey Maus - Emma Britten
Obviously in training for the Puissance at the Cat of the Year Show, and now we know just why we couldn’t get any loo rolls a few months back!!

Equal 5th.
Hana - Clara Park
The determination and athleticism Hana displayed in order to get her fly (?) was very impressive.

Nekhbet - Agnes Laurent
Loved how at the end of the clip Nekhbet looked over her shoulder as though to say ‘how’s that Mum?’ Hope the plant is OK though.

It was a joy to look at all your wonderful Maus - surely they are the most athletic of cats.

05/07/2020

Just a quick bit of info while we wait for some more results :-) When we ask you to message us, we aren't just being lazy! As a Page on Facebook, we can only send a direct message to someone if they have commented on one of our posts in the last 7 days. For most winners, they've commented on a post and that's allowed us to message them, but for some, the last comment is over a week ago so they need to message us first.

I think this is Facebook trying to protect you from getting lots of spam messages from the pages you follow but it does make our job a little trickier.

Hope you're all having a lovely Sunday 😍

🎉🎉CLASS 9 RESULTS🎉🎉

Prettiest Kitten
Judge - Melanie Morgan

Once again such a privilege to have this class of 80+ kittens to consider! Always difficult to assess kittens
as we hold them to adult standard yet they all develop at different rates. This is an elegant athletic breed that should show refinement of boning and line. Too often we see coarseness in muzzle and body, ears too high, bodies too cobby or too oriental. We want to see that medium long graceful body and the softly contoured modified wedge head that ideally gives us two concentric equilateral triangles. First head on from chin to top of skull and then the larger that goes to tips of ears. The large almond eyes
should be set level in the head with the outer corner in line with base of the broad based ear. We had some lovely kittens to consider in this batch. Kittens in contention for the top five:

Ella - Marie Claire Van der Veen
Maze - Lo**ta Sakka Amini
Panda - Rebekka Lokke
Stella - Rebekka Lokke

My Top five:
1st - Amelia - Mia Asplund
Such an elegant girl, with large broad based ears and gooseberry green eyes. Body is medium long,
athletic and graceful and color is exquisite. Love love love that length of leg and that refined boning.

2nd - Pixie - Rebekka Lokke
Gorgeous expression on this stunning girl. She has beautiful gooseberry green almond eyes, nice
refinement to that nose and lovely proportions to her elegant body with good length of leg.

3rd - Nami - Rebekka Lokke
This one is tough… at first glance this was my best kitten. I love this picture and am taken with the large
open almond eyes and the incredible eye color. I also like the ear set. Too often we do not see that
ample width between and ears while allowed to be medium or large are far to often too small… I like
what I can see of the boning, but I cannot see enough of body and pattern in the picture and I suspect
that from other angles I might not be as enamored with the muzzle, or the ears… enough of a question
to move her down from best, but she cannot be denied, she is a lovely girl.

4th - Jonathon - Charlot Jordan
Such a treat to see proper color on a smoke and those eyes… wow! Then you get to head structure –
can clearly see that equilateral triangle, the strong jaw and chin and ears that continue the lines of the
wedge, nothing extreme here, just gentle flow that is exquisitely balanced.

5th - Dollar - Torill Thevik
Very promising baby. Lovely contrast already Nice proportions to head.

🎉🎉 CLASS 2 RESULTS🎉🎉
Best Smoke Contrast
Judge - Melanie Morgan

Thank you again for the honor of judging this class. Such a treat to celebrate our smokes! Smoke Egyptian Maus are a testament to selective breeding. A non-agouti cat where we have bred for expression of the ghost pattern. No picture can do justice to the breathtaking beauty of a truly exceptional smoke, so this is a difficult exercise for our participants. Everything about this colour is challenging. Technically we are looking for jet black cat with a bright enough pale white/silver undercoat that we can actually see the pattern… the moment we lose the undercoat, the pattern becomes muted.
Since they are not always “in coat” showing this color takes “Challenging” to a whole new level. One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking that a pale charcoal cat with extreme contrast is correct. While it may be appealing, it is not correct. This should essentially be a black cat. The objective is to maintain that and STILL be able to see the pattern… NO EASY feat… it takes a brilliant undercoat.
Then add to the challenge that to have a top example of the breed you must also have type and….. well, you can see why this minority colour in a minority breed is so under-appreciated.

I would like to share some of the other cats that were in contention for the top five spots:
Lacy - Veronica Maydon
Midnight - Bianca Hoeger
Ramses - Karin Kanrin

My Top five:
1st - Jonatan - Charlot Jordan
Beautiful color on this smoke. You can clearly see that this is a black cat, but the brilliant pale undercoat
is there giving that ethereal look that is the hallmark of this color.

2nd - Djinn - Dena Bracy
Another lovely smoke with the proper shiny black and pale bright undercoat.

3rd - Zorro - Cecillie Einarsen
Unbelievable undercoat and jet black markings.

4th - Optimus - Anne Claire Montagne
Great pattern showing through on this smoke.

5th - Maze - Lo**ta Sakka Amini
Gorgeous pattern and lovely black overlay on this very young kitten.

Best Silver Clarity & Contrast
Judge - Melanie Morgan

Melanie has written an excellent set of remarks which are unfortunately too big to fit in a Facebook post! I've added them as a picture below with the results here.

"I was asked to pick my top five and comment on them, but I would also like to share the cats that were
strong contenders for those top five spots:

Angel - Christopher Mclean
Cloudy – Georgina Anderson Keeble
Disco - Charlotte Solberg
Honsu - Vera Solovieva
Louis – Marie Claire Van der Veen
Luna - Jessika Rudensjo Bergman
N’Joy - Anne-Claire Montagne
Syd - Lesley Szwed
Panda - Rebekka Lokke
Stella - Rebekka Lokke
Sushi - Jennifer Dunham Sorko

Top five
1st - Theo - Whitney Nickel
This is the whole package – the coat is clearly dense and resilient with ticking that does not detract from the pattern. The contrast between the pale silver ground color and dark charcoal spots is clearly defined. You can see the requisite facial markings and they enhance the lovely expression. The picture
also showcases the required black tail tip, and paw pads.

2nd - Ares - Ruth Perkins
While this cat is clearly sporting his summer coat the clean color and contrast is nothing short of spectacular – all the more so because he is out of coat. Again, not a hint of tarnish and a really lovely busy pattern that showcases that pale silver undercoat and dark, almost black charcoal spots. Really an
elegant example of the breed

3rd - Pixie - Rebekka Lokke
Love the ticking and bright color on the cat. This is a beautiful example of a lighter charcoal spot that is very appealing.

4th - Dinah - Marie Claire Van der Veen
Unfortunately this picture is rather dark, but even with the challenges posed by that, the extreme contrast and clean crisp color is apparent on this cat. Not a hint of tarnish and while the coat looks a bit short the ticking is apparent.

5th - Natti - Jenny Mikaela Hissa
This is clearly a young kitten whose coat is not yet in and thus is lacking the ticking and dense resilient texture we would like to see, however the contrast is exceptional and the color is nice and clean. She shows a great deal of promise.

Most Handsome Male
Judge - Janet Williams

What a fabulous set of photos! I had 75 to choose from and it was very very difficult to even make a shortlist. I also took into consideration the quality of the photography itself, the pose of the cat and the aesthetics of the surroundings.

1st Place: Nanisiana Anais-Boden PHARAON

I just love this photo, taken against a simple white background, with a beautiful cat that has a lovely curious expression on his face. His stance is super, his eyes are stunning, his head is nicely balanced and he has some super spotting to his charcoal coat

2nd Place: Lesley Szwed SYD

This beautiful close up of the lovely Syd immediately put him in my short list. He is stunningly handsome with lovely large eyes and a gorgeous expression.

3rd Place: Ginny Mellinger MEMPHIS

I love this photo of a very relaxed cat in the most attractive surroundings. He has a good broad head, pale gooseberry green eyes and super parallel lines to his nose.

4th Place: Whitney Nickel BEAN

Wow, this boy has the most stunning black spots on a lovely clear silver base coat. He has expressive pale green eyes, a nice broad ringed tail and a balanced head.

Joint 5th place:
Eileen Clayton MA**ER

A very nice smoke lad with a gorgeous coat, a good profile and a worried expression.

Joint 5th place:
Lo**ta Sakka Amini MAO

An alert silver lad with a great stance. He has a super Mau expression.

Also worthy of mention and in my short list:
Lesley Turner MORSE a beautiful bronze boy
Katie Becks SAMUEL a lovely close up of this smoke boy

It’s the last day for entries! Make sure you’re happy with your photos before entries close at midnight tonight.

We’ve contacted a few people whose entries don’t follow the rules and it would be a great help if you could check your entries too to make sure they conform. The main ones are

- You can only submit photos you’ve taken yourself - no professional photography or photo editing
- You must add your cats Pet name (not pedigree name) and s*x as a comment
- For the Kitten class, you also need to include the kittens age when the photo was taken
- For the bonus class, you need to say whether the cat is a pedigree or non-pedigree

Thank you so much for all your entries so far - looking forward to the judging!

UPDATE - This prize will be for any BIS winner based outside the UK!

⭐️⭐️ PRIZE ANNOUNCEMENT⭐️⭐️

As you may have seen, the lovely cat bed which has been donated can only be sent if the BIS winner is UK based.

We’ve had another very kind offer of a pet portrait from Carolle Fleury should the BIS winner be based in Canada/America!

Here is some of Carolle’s previous wonderful portraits.

Hope your cats are all cooperating with their best poses for your entries 😉
