Homes for Hoppers Giving Bunnies a Second Chance
Based in Buckinghamshire

22/07/2022

All credit to all of the amazing rescues who have worked so hard this week looking after all the animals in their care. I can’t imagine how hard it was.

It has been so nice being able to give our residents all of our time, especially in the heat this week.

Although we have closed our doors, if you have adopted a rabbit from us and for any reason are unable to care for them any longer, please contact me! If you have any issues or worries, please contact me! We will always remain responsible for the rabbit’s we have re-homed

I know every rabbit we re-homed are in amazing homes and I fully trust they are in safe, loving forever homes however we will always take in any of our babies if they needed us for any reason.

Thank you to again to everyone who has supported us and especially to all the families who have adopted from us ❤️

Next up we have our beautiful Lenny Boy.

Lenny came from the same idiots Bumble-B came from.

When he came to us, we noticed pretty quickly he was in stasis and the vets confirmed his stomach was completely empty.

Lenny not only went into stasis 3 times whilst he was with us, but he went into hypothermia on one occasion and we almost lost him, but Lenny was our little fighter!!!

Lenny was the kindest and sweetest boy and we had such a great bond.

I spent a lot of time nursing Lenny, medicating him, feeding him and giving him lots of love.

I was so happy when my cousins came to visit and fell in love with him.

They already had a single female too so It was totally meant to be.

Lenny was adopted into our family and i‘m so grateful. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect family for him.

They did the bond themselves with my help and guidance on the other end of the phone.

It has almost been 1 year since Lenny went to live his best life with his forever family and girly Tilly!

Lenny has completely come out of his shell and he is super confident. He makes his way around the house and his mummy even said he can be naughty (that’s what I like to hear!) 😜

We love you Lenny ❤️

Last week we announced our closure and I was going to share some of our success stories but we were hit with COVID which put us out all of last week 😫

So here we are.

Starting this with our longest stay, Baby and Bumble-B, now Cheese and Beans 😂

Baby was surrendered to us at 12 weeks old and this girl was the sassiest, funniest, craziest little dinosaur we had ever had.

We had baby for around 6 months.

Due to her size, we had to wait longer before she could be spayed which meant we had her for a lot longer.

We didn’t get a lot of interest in Baby at first.

The special part about Baby’s journey is that it involved 2 other special boys.

✨ Bartholomew ✨

I’m not going to go into to much but we collected Bartie from another ”rescue” who were terrible and not giving their rabbits the correct care.

At this point, we had decided to bond Bartie and Baby, and we already had the most AMAZING home lined up.

A week after getting him neutered, with no warning or signs after making a full recovery, we sadly lost our beautiful boy.

We were all devastated and almost a year on, I still get upset ❤️

✨ Bumble-B ✨

We were approached by some of our regular culprits to take in Bumble. He was the 3rd one we had taken from these gross humans.

He was the kindest, sweetest boy.

When we lost Bertie, we remember looking at Bumble in his run and we knew it was meant to be.

We spoke to Baby’s new family who like us, were still getting over the loss of Bartholomew.

This was the easiest bond we had ever done.

Ever.

Baby and Bumble-B were meant to be.

Bartholomew brought them together and will always remain a part of their story.

The funny part of this story is their mummy Lorna actually met Baby long before she reserved them. Her mum actually adopted one of our previous fosters Rodney at the start of 2021. Baby had remained in her thoughts for all those months. She hadn’t forgotten about her. When we put her up for adoption (after she was thought we would keep her), she knew Baby was meant to be hers.

We ADORE this whole family who have now adopted 3 rabbits from us ❤️

25/06/2022

The rabbits have had fresh fenugreek this week and they smell of curry 😂😂

Fenugreek is really good for rabbit gut health❤️

23/06/2022

If you are looking to adopt a rabbit and you come across a “rescue” that does not neuter and vaccinate their rabbits, please do not adopt a rabbit from them.

This is extremely irresponsible and is not correct practice at all.

Please do your research 🥰

18/06/2022

In a complete state now 😂

1 more week left until our beautiful Dex and Daisy head off to their forever home after being in our care for 6 months!!

So say that we love them is an understatement.

So glad we could give them the most loving foster home whilst they grew stronger and fought off the most horrible illnesses.

We have treasured every moment with them and there will be a huge hole in our hearts ❤️

Remember our fosters Baby and Bumble from last year?

Well their amazing mum runs an amazing Business, Dried Delights!

Everything is hand picked and made my Lorna and she puts so much care into EVERY package!

I ordered a couple of items for each pair and Lorna added in some extra goodies for them! 🥰

Our 6 residents 100% approve of their Sunday Evening Enrichment!

Thank you Auntie Lorna, love Bambi, Ermey, Dylan, KiKi, Roo & Bugsy 🐰🐰🐰🐰🐰🐰

✨ My Loppies ✨

Before I became a bunny owner, I was totally in love with how lops looked!

The more and more I’ve educated myself over the last 6 years, the more I’ve learnt about the many health problems that can come with a Mini Lop and Dwarf Lop

Ear Infections

Because of the crease in the ear where the ear lops, there is no route for any liquid to drain out of the ear. This means lop eared rabbits are prone to ear infections which are not visible to the human eye. The infection can spread and can cause major problems for them. Sometimes irreversible. At every vet check up, we always ensure the vet checks inside their ears for any gunk or signs of infection. We use a prescribed ear wash for ours as they tend to get very gunky ears.

Brachycephalic

Lops have been bred to have short squishy faces however this causes some major health problems for rabbit’s. They are prone to breathing problems as they cannot take in as much oxygen when breathing. They can get respiratory issues which can lead to stress and they can die from this.

Dental Problems

So many breeds of rabbits have been bred to have smaller skulls. This can cause extreme dental issues such as malocclusions. Rabbit teeth constantly grow which, in a rabbit that has been bred to have a small skull, does not work.

Grooming

A lot of lops have a crazy amount of floof which especially in the summer, can be extremely dangerous with the heat. The moulting hair will also be ingested from grooming. This can cause blockages and can cause gut stasis.

I love my Lops but I’m fully aware of the potential issues. They have become such a popular rabbit which means they are being bred non stop for money making butt heads to get some extra cash.

Please do your research before adopting a rabbit, and please do not buy a rabbit from a breeder. There are THOUSANDS of rabbits in rescue who need loving homes.

The more people stop buying from breeders, the lesser the demand. 🐰

So about a month ago, we had the news that our older girl KiKi is fully blind.

We have completely changed our approach with her now and we have seen such a positive change in her.

✨ Verbal ✨

We are a lot more verbal with her, talking to her as we approach her or in the area so she knows we are around. She now clocks where our voices are and she will run towards the sound of our voices. We use her name constantly for reassurance.

✨ Enviromemt ✨

She often runs into things so we keep her surroundings the same. Their water bowls are in the same spots. Their hay goes In the same place. We don’t move anything around so she knows where everything is.

✨ Grooming ✨

KiKi had been slowly losing her sight for a while and during this time I ensured the fur around her eyes was cut back. This was to make sure her limited vision was not restricted in any way.

✨ Dylan ✨

She relies on her brother Dylan for comfort and security. You’ll often see her next to him which I think is for guidance.

Rabbit’s are extremely intelligent and adapt really well. This girl is completely unstoppable 👌🏽

Can you believe we have been fostering Daisy and Dexter for 6 months!!!!!!

We will be doing the home check next week and then they will hopefully be off to their forever home!

What a delight it has been fostering such a special, funny and amazing pair of kittens.

We will be soaking in every moment we have with these two for the next couple of weeks!

Can we all just appreciate Bryan’s Poo 😂👌🏽

We are slightly poo obsessed in our house. If you’re a bunny owner, you’ll understand.

It’s just one of the signs of a healthy bunny! 💩

When Brian came to us about 6 weeks ago, his poo’s were dark, small and riddled with worms and were typically what we see when a rabbit is stressed, on a poor diet or if they have something wrong with them.

After a course of wormer and getting him onto a healthy balanced diet, his litter tray is glowing golden ✨

Brian will be up for rehoming very soon 😍

We have seen this too often ☹️

Let’s work together to make some changes for the sake of all the suffering bunnies out there 🤍

Imagine being trapped in a small enclosure for your entire life.

Imagine not being able to stand up straight all day.

Imagine eating, sleeping, and urinating in the same space.

That’s the reality for many of the UK’s pet rabbits.

Let’s change this.

One of the biggest excuses we hear for wanting to surrender a rabbit is something along the lines of..

“We lost one of our rabbits and we are now looking to surrender the one we are left with…”

WHY!!!!! 😩😩😩

Why are people suddenly unable to care for their rabbits because they lost one?

It really is a serious case of can’t be assed.

When you adopt a pair of rabbits, there is every possibility one will pass before the other. If that happens, your other rabbit will need another friend.

Rabbits are extremely sociable and need a bunny friend 🐰🐰

Please do your research before adopting rabbit’s!!

Some of you who have been with us for a while will remember Bartholomew who we took in last year.

Barty declined suddenly and we sadly lost him.

We never knew what caused it but we know the ”rescue” we took him from had a virus and parasite that spread around most of the rabbit’s they were taking in. The vet also confirmed it wasn’t gut stasis. This rescue has shut down now which we are so grateful for.

The loss of Barty hit us really hard as he had such an amazing life ahead of him.

We buried him in the flower garden and mum planted a beautiful flower on top of him and this has blossomed into something beautiful.

We will never forget you beautiful boy ❤️🐰

Brian was born in our care along with 5 others 4 years ago! We named all the babies after The Magic Roundabout Characters ❤️

We actually adopted the mum, Bambi and 2 of his brothers, Ermey (Ermentrude) and Dylan.

They are SOOOO alike!!

They are such strong characters like their mum and are so funny to watch.

Brian Update!!

Brian was surrendered to us about 4 weeks ago now. He was EXTREMELY over weight and weighed over 3KG!

He now weighs 2.6KG! ❤️

Fat camp is still in action as he has more to lose yet.

He has finished his course of wormer and just finished a course of Fibreplex so we are heading in the right direction.

He’s a lot happier and a lot more alert.

The only annoying thing is that he is a complete secret eater. If he knows we are watching him or outside, he won’t eat. We are working with him to build up his confidence.

He’s definitely lonely bless him ❤️

16/05/2022

It seems to be a thing for some people to take Rabbit’s out on trips to visit stores and events.

This is NOT OK!

Car journeys can be extremely stressful for rabbit’s. Stress can cause a rabbit to go into gut stasis.

Rabbit’s are NOT dogs. They are prey animals and should be left in the comfort of their own home and territory. 🐰

✨ENRICHMENT IDEA✨

- Cardboard Box (The sturdier box the better)
- Scissors

Cut a door big enough for the buns to fit through.

Cut little window holes around the box for them to poke their noses through and chew.

Give to your buns for hours of entertainment.

They will chew the box, make the holes bigger and destroy it!

Resident buns Bugsy and Roo love their box 😍

Snuggles with Brian ❤️

Over our 7 years of rescuing and being owners to 6 bunnies, we get asked all the time, “why rabbits?”

People do not realise Rabbits are one of THE most neglected animals.

They are the most innocent and mis understood animals.

We will always be advocates for these precious babies. 🐰

Brian Update 🐰

Still figuring this little man out. He’s pooping and eating which is good however, his eating efforts are poooor!

He won’t eat if you’re watching him or in the garden with him (even if he catches you watching out the window)

All the things we were told he loved to eat, he hasn’t touched 😂

It has taken him 8 days to start eating his pellets.

He only likes eating hand picked grass, but even then will only eat it every couple of days 😂

Due to this lack of eating, we have been giving him small critical care feeds as otherwise he’s living on an empty stomach.

Yesterday we saw a slight increase in his food consumption (I mean like eating 10 pellets)

We are working with him, giving him lots of love and getting him back on track!

Brian Update!

We took him for a vet check up yesterday as he still isn’t 100% with his eating.

Due to the amount of pin worms we have come across so far, it seems this has been left without treatment for a very long time.

This has most likely caused a lot of damage in his body including inflammation which is causing discomfort.

We are treating him for everything and doing small critical care feeds throughout the day as he’s not eating enough at the moment.

This boy has a long journey ahead of him but we’ve got him ❤️

We need to order some pro-biotics for him so if you’re able to help we would appreciate it!

So, an update on the boys!!

As most of you know we fostered Malcolm and George for the OAS.

Malcolm came to us with one of the worst dental cases most people have seen.

With your support, we were able to get his front teeth removed!

Not only this but his brother George also went into stasis twice! You enabled us to cover the vet bills.

Both boys had extremely fussy taste with hay and food, you guys enabled us to buy their favourites to keep them happy!

George went off to the OAS on Sunday and is in the process of being bonded 🤍

Malcolm is still waiting for his forever family to come along.

Honestly, I cannot thank all of you enough for your support. 🤍

Good Morning 👋

My name is Malcolm I’ve become a popular lad here at the sanctuary, I’m not surprised really who wouldn’t love my fantastic personality ❤️

I have the team wrapped around my paws!! They bring me fresh herbs, forage, timothy hay and treats… although I have to say I don’t feel I get enough of the treats!! I may well put a complaint in and see if they increase my daily limit... Watch this space 😉

I’m a bit of a special bun, I had to have my incisors removed as they weren’t aligned properly. Some may think that’s is a reason not to adopt me but I like to think it makes me even more unique ❤️

I hop around my room watching my neighbours come and go off to their forever homes and often wonder when my time will come… I hope it will be soon. 😔

I’m desperate to find a forever companion and who knows we may be bonded buns soon, I just need to make sure they are the one for me before we enter the bunnymoon suite ❤️

I'm going to hop off now before the humans see I've been busy writing my rehoming post... Well if I don't who else will!! Breakfast is also on its way... Here we go again they’ve put my nuggets in a treat ball 🙄 They think it’s great because it keeps me busy... I'd like to see them chasing their breakfast round 🤣

Anyway if you feel you can give the most handsome, charming and intelligent bunny (that's me) a forever home, please click on the link below 👇

Daisy and Dex are still with us ❤️

These guys are being rehomed under The Cat's Whiskers Rescue - Bucks

We were only meant to have them over Christmas but rehoming has proven quite difficult since their diagnosis of CaliciVirus.

This virus is contagious to other cats so we are looking for an indoor home for them ideally.

They are the most perfect pair of kittens ❤️

He’s being a sausage at the moment and isn’t eating so we have started the critical care and gut stim!

21/10/2020

I’m feeling so positive about this community we are creating. I’ve had so many people message me for advise and asking questions!

I’m not a bunny professional in any way however over our 4 years of fostering and rehoming, it has been noticed how acclimatised our bunnies have been to family life.

We have always and will continue to take restricted numbers in.

As soon as the numbers start to build up, you have less time to spend with each individual bunny.

It’s so important that every bunny has our full attention. We get to learn more about their personalities, their qwerks, their likes and dislikes!

Yes, we aren’t taking in huge numbers however we are making a bigger impact on those bunny’s lives! They deserve it 🥰

My aim over the next year would be to have a few others join on board who have the same passion as me! If you would be interested in jumping in please drop me a message 🙂
