🎄 Let’s talk Christmas Day!

You may have lots of people over and your dog may not be used to this.
People act differently on Christmas Day - excitement and other emotions can be flowing.

As can the alcohol. Arguments may be more likely.

Children may be more hyper. Or over tired.

Dogs feed off the energy around them.

There are more sensitive to it than we always realise.

Give them a break - a covered crate or another room some of the time can help them to balance that energy out.

Keeping them as part of the full day of festivities may actually be more cruel than kind.

It could even cause a dog bite.

Other tips:

🦃 Don’t leave cooked bones on counter tops. Put somewhere enclosed and when finished put in the outside bin not your kitchen one - nobody wants a vet visit on Christmas Day.

🧸 Your dog may be excited by the kid’s the new toys. They don’t understand they aren’t for them - make sure you are happy for your dog to potentially take whatever you leave laying about.

🦴 Chewing is a great decompresser for dogs BUT make sure when they are eating they feel safe. Keep any visitors or children in a different room or pop your dog in a crate or pen to eat.

💤 Your dog will likely sleep less on Christmas Day - that’s normal, just make sure you allow them a little extra sleeping time on Boxing Day to make up for it.

🐕‍🦺 A nice sniffy walk will help your dog to settle more on Christmas Day. A sniffed out dog is a happier, more chilled dog.

🍫 Be careful where you put the chocolates and mince pies. Also be aware that unopened gifts may contain chocolate.

👃 It’s normal for you dog to want to sniff new people and presents. Let them (if it’s save to do so) - it’s how they suss out new things.

🕯️ Christmas candles can be lovely but they can also be toxic or aversive for your dog. Check anything scent based before using it.

Christmas is much more fun when you can be proactive with your dog.
More fun that a vet visit or a trip to A&E anyway 😉 🎅 🐶

Puppies NEED to chew!

Certain breeds need more chewing than others.

They need to chew to develop both emotionally and physically (they have muscles to develop).

They need to chew to calm and decompress (think of it as their wine and chocolate after a busy day).

They need enough opportunity to chew appropriate things to keep them away from your body and furniture. To simply train this and not provide an alternative is like punishing them for being…..a puppy!

They also need enough to chew to help their sore little gums.

Most puppies I see need MORE chewing in their lives. Most don’t get enough.

Our own adult dogs get chewing opportunities each and every day.

To deprive a dog of any age this natural outlet means not providing for their needs.

Go out and buy your pup some extra chews. Edible ones are great. Go for natural ones rather than cheap rawhide or Dentastix.

Getting a new puppy can be hard!

With so much conflicting advice on the internet and well-meaning friends and family throwing information at you, it's easy to become a little overwhelmed with it all.

We did lots of things wrong 🙈 S***f that I would never do now.

Stuff we would NEVER advise our clients to do.

The internet can be a dangerous place in many ways.

When you are new to being a dog parent, it's easy to see something online and think it sounds like something you should do, when in fact it's terrible advice.

It's often impossible to tell the difference at first.

That's why we started the Puppy Training Club online membership.

We wanted to help new puppy owners get decent advice at an easily affordable price.

Not everybody can afford 1-2-1 dog trainers, especially with this energy crisis but we are keeping the price of the membership low for as long as possible to help as many of you as we can.

Inside you get videos delivered directly to you, so no more blindly searching the internet.

Each week we go live answering any questions our members have about their puppies.

It's professional, qualified advice that can cost up to £80!

If you have a new puppy - it's a must.

Mistakes are a lot easier to prevent than they are to fix and we LOVE helping you to prevent mistakes xx

Yes it will take a few weeks.

But if you start now - your walks WILL be better by Christmas 🎄 🎉

In fact, the earlier you start the earlier you’ll get there.

Puppy parents: let’s talk flooring!

🐶

Many of us have slippy non capeted floors these days which is great for cleaning.....but not so great for your puppy’s little body.

In my own kitchen I have runners creating a walk way through the room, as shown in the pictures.

Why? I have one dog with hip issues and another with a an autoimmune disease which causes his muscles to waste and so slipping on hard flooring needs to be limited.

The same applies for puppies. A puppy’s body isn’t fully formed and so slipping and sliding on flooring can cause issues with their joints and lead to things like hip dysplasia which affects the hip ball and socket.

Do I love the look of the mats? Nope and it makes hoovering and mopping a pain in the a$$ BUT it helps protect the dogs and so it is what it is. I love my dogs more than I love my kitchen 🤷‍♀️

Why am I telling you this? Just so that you are aware as I know many of my puppy clients genuinely have no idea of the impact the slipping and sliding on floors (especially when wet) is having on their puppy.

🙌 Side note: Hair in between their foot pads can enhance the slipping too.

🙌 Side note 2: never ask your pup for a sit on a slippy floor

💥Fireworks💥

💥 Fireworks 💥

How have your dogs been feeling with the bangs tonight?

Although not distressed, these two actually noticed them (they don’t normally bother).

Whether the fireworks were closer/louder than normal or they are just feeling a little more sensitive today or whether it was because their dad was out, who knows 🤷‍♀️

Luckily for them my Spotify music turned up (country if you must know - it’s my new guilty pleasure. That and Phil Collin’s music 🤷‍♀️😂🙈) a chew and a little casual reassurance and they were fine.

If they hadn’t been as they are toy motivated dogs, I would have started to play with them and their favourite toys.

Fear and excitement kinda take up the same parts of the brain so play can be a secret weapon when it comes to fireworks.

Other things which can help are:

🪴 Calming supplements
👂 Snood ear muffs
🧘‍♂️ Ttouch
👃 Calming scents
🐶 Thundershirts
💟 Your own energy

Hope all your pups are okay 💞

Having a dog who is confidant and comfortable in life is just a wonderful thing.

A huge thing that helps dogs with this is giving direction and instruction on what you would you like them to do instead of just saying no when they make poor choices.

For instance if your dog is jumping up at you and that's not what you want. Then instead tell them what you do want and reward that. That might be a all foor feet on the ground, a sit or a lie on a bed/mat.

Behaviours that are rewarding will happen more often.

This will massively help you and your dog. Instead of just repeating NO.

Poor recall can cause anxiety when you're out walking.

🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺

We've been there too.

If you would like to feel confident that your dog will come back when called each and every time....
..even around other people and dogs...
..then the truth is, you're probably going to have to put a little time and energy into training it.

In the nicest possible way - you maybe need to just suck it up and make a start.

💞 Said with love, not with judgment 💞

Depending on the breed and their own personality, some dogs do require more training than others.

Putting it off is actually making your job more difficult.

Every time your dog doesn't come back to you when you call, it becomes more and more likely that they will ignore you the next time and the time after that.

Our RAPIDS RECALL video course is about to go up in price.

You can grab it today for just £19 and get started right away.

In our FREE Facebook group, when asked what was the best thing people had taught their puppy, the answers were varied.

Some said recall.

Some said lead walking.

Others said wait and how be calm.

All great answers.

Our very favourite answer though was..."that they can trust me".

LOVE that answer!

Trust is the basis for everything really.

Everything else you can re-teach and train. Trust however is delicate 🥰

10/10/2022

Lead walking is a common thing that breaks down relationship between dog and human - so I absolutely recommend getting it right as early as possible.

Here I’m building up value for being by my side.

❌ Training doesn’t need to look all fancy and polished.

❌ It doesn’t need to take hours out of your life.

✅ Quick 2 minute sessions while the kettle is boiling are PERFECT!

We have a online course if you want to learn more 🎊

IF FEEDING KIBBLE - soak it in hot water and leave to cool before feeding it. It's kinder on their little kidneys.

🍉🥒🥦🧄🥚🥥🍌🍏🍓

Dogs are like us and don't usually drink enough water so often need a little help to consume enough.

Adding some 'human' food such as meat and lightly cooked veggies is a great idea too.

They can help to reduce the risk of cancer and other illnesses!

Try a tin of sardines too - I bet your pup will love them! 🐠

WHETHER it's biting when being touched, not enjoying being groomed, barking at people or stopping when out on walks...

Being able to understand the subtle signs your puppy will be showing you is a massive help.

Puppies can't use words. Instead they use body language, tail and ear positions and other communication signs.

They are great at understanding us. We owe it to them to learn how to understand them back :-)

You can Google, or our membership is a great place to learn these signs.

RECALL is one of the most fun things to teach, yet it's one of the most common concerns puppy clients come to us with. Especially around that adolescence age!

You can get a dog who comes back when called with just a few minutes of training each day, for more confident dog walks.

We've put together a super handy, easy-to-follow recall course for you to start getting the results you want. See the link in the comments to start improving your recall 🐶👇

🐶 SOCIALISATION!
Everyone has different ideas as to what that is.
Even dog trainers!
I’ve said before that puppies need to spend time with their own species.
It’s how they learn.
*BUT that isn’t the same as letting your pup meet every person or dog they see.
Hanging out with your pup at places where there are cars, bikes, wheelchairs, children and other dogs going past at a distance and teaching them it’s none of their business is essential to their learning.
It’s part of socialisation.
Darcy here is ultra super social and would kiss EVERYONE given the chance.
I love this about her.
HOWEVER she needed to be taught how to control herself and be calm when there is stuff going on if I wanted to take her into busy environments.
Puppyhood is the easiest time to teach this.
🐾 Keep the distance far enough that your pup can succeed. This distance will alter over time and from day to day.
🐾 Don’t hyper focus on your puppy. They won’t chill out if you’re fussing being a helicopter mum.
🐾 You can use a long lasting chew that doesn't need you to keep focused on your puppy.
🐾 SHUT UP! As humans we want to involve ourselves in everything but by nattering on we often interfere with the puppy’s natural learning.
🐾 Don’t worry if your pup is sat, stood or lay down. Let them pick their own body position - remember the aim is to be chilled and naturally controlled - not a Sergeant Major ✌️
🐾 My go to is a nice coffee shop with plenty of room either inside or out. I take a mat for puppy to lie on, a long lasting chew like a yakker or rabbits ear. I settle down with my coffee and maybe a cake, who am i kidding, usually some cake and we watch the world go by together.
If you want more help with your puppy why not join our lovely puppy community. Where myself and my friend Lyndsay can give you great help and support.
Check it out.

Do you let your pup be a dog?

DOGS NEED TO BE DOGS!

They need to have opportunities to get mucky and wet.

They need to sniff, dig and play with their own species.

They need chance to hang out and just be a dog, without us micro managing them 24/7.

In contrast they don’t need….birthday cakes, dressing up or doggy beer!

There isn’t necessarily anything wrong with buying these things, but just know who you are doing it for - and it’s not the dog!

Is it a pain that I’m going to have to dry these two off after our walk and keep them in the kitchen for a bit.

🙋🏼‍♀️ HELL YES!!

But they had a fab walk and given the choice over that and a bottle of dog beer, I know which they’d choose 🍻 🐾

REST is so important for dogs of all ages.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of occupying your pup 24/7 and forgetting to teach them how to switch off.

Absolutely they need things to chew and sniff.

They need both physical and mental stimulation.

BUT they also need to be taught how to cope when illness or weather means that life needs to be at a slower pace for a while.

You honestly don’t have to become a full time dog entertainer because of the hot weather 🥵

That’s a lot of pressure to put on yourself.

Instead, meet your pup’s needs and then allow them rest.

If you need help teaching your puppy how to rest and switch off without exhausting them (or yourself) first, then join us in the PTC membership to find out how.

😫 ADOLESCENT DOG 😫

Are you playing the blame game?

When my first dog was younger, I didn’t realise that his ‘naughty’ behaviour was partly down to adolescence.

I thought it was a mixture between us not knowing how to train him and him just being a hyper/difficult dog 😬

I was yet to learn that a puppy’s brain is not fully developed until after adolescence, which means they are not fully in control of their behaviour during this time.

So I blamed him. I blamed me. And I blamed my husband a lot of the time too.
There were things we needed to learn how to train for sure.

And we started to do that, but in addition we also needed to just cut him and ourselves some slack.
We needed to stop the blame game!

It wasn’t healthy for any of us.

Maybe you need to stop that game too and know that at the other side of adolescence with just a little bit of training, will be a better, calmer life 💕

There are absolutely things you can to get there easier - and we’ve put together some of the key exercises we know will help you get to the other side sooner.

https://www.puppytrainingclub.co.uk/courses/adolescence-beyond

If you are one of the many puppy owners that sometimes wonders if they have bitten off more than they can chew - know that the likelihood is that one day those feelings will be nothing more than a distant memory.

You will be on the other side of adolescence and living your best life with your dog just like I am with Patch.

Hang in there 💪🏼🐾
