A somber day for me today as I announce that Lucky Lucarno is officially retired from racing. His last run in the Heart of all England proved just too much and he sustained an injury that will take some time to fix. He is staying at the same yard through the summer whilst he recovers and will enjoy some much needed grass with his mates.

All in all a fantastic season for Lucky, winning a race would have been a great achievement but to also give me the opportunity to have a runner on the track in such a prestigious race was an honour. He owes me and his part owners Julie and Dave absolutely nothing either. We have many good memories to be thankful for. He has been a legend of a horse on the yard and a massive part of my life for the last 3 years and has taught me so much personally in my riding and training career.

This will also be a pause in my training career for now, taking some much needed time away from the sport. A huge thanks to all the people who have supported me over the last 5 years, I never thought that I’d ever ride a horse never mind train horses back then so all of this is a dream come true for me. There may be more to come in the future and I doubt i’ll be able to stay away from racing for ever.

A great achievement yesterday having a runner in the Heart of all England at Hexham. Lucky Lucarno looking like a possible winner till the big hill to finish just was too much for him. A fantastic day for all involved and just to get to this race was a win. He finished the race in 5th and jumped round well. Big thanks to Joe Wright for the ride and to Arron for all the help yesterday.

Lucky Lucarno takes his chance tomorrow Hexham Racecourse in the Paxton's Heart of All England Maiden Hunters' Chase (For the Heart of all England Trophy) with Joe Wright in the saddle for the first time.

He came out of his win last time out in great shape and I expect a good run tomorrow again. Fingers crossed for a safe trip round and we can hope for a clear run.

Just thought i’d take this time to thank everyone who makes days like Saturday possible. As someone who simply does this as a hobby, working a full time job then every single night and weekend spent at the yard. I can’t have this success without a fantastic group of people around me. From the gallops which I use, farrier, physio, dentist and vets, I can’t thank you all enough. An extra shoutout to the Thompson family for giving me an opportunity to join their yard last summer, their fantastic facilities have given Lucky the best possible chance of getting back onto the track this year. They have been great at helping out at any possible chance and a fantastic day for Venetia Thompson to ride him and win on her first ever ride.

Finally an extra big thank you to two main people that have been there for me though thick and thin with not just Lucky but previous horses. Aaron Anderson and Jess Bedi , two of the most knowledgeable people who have taught and guided me along the way. From being on the phone at all hours to Aaron finding the horse and securing the deal, they both have been on hand the last couple of years to get him to this success. Two great friends of mine who in their own right are highly respected within the sport.

🏆 Winner Winner 🏆

Lucky Lucarno won in fine fashion on Saturday Corbridge Races in the novice riders conditions race. He went into the race with a new jockey, Venetia Thompson having her first ever ride in a race. A dream start to her career and a peach of a ride given to win comfortably. From a prominent position in the start of the race she got Lucky doing what he does best, jumping. As the race developed she found herself in front a lot of the way, judging her pace perfectly. Jumping 3 out before turning up the hill the pair found themselves in the lead by a few lengths. Then kicking for home she found a perfect stride 2 out then the last. After that she drove him out up the hill to win well in the end.

I can’t describe how delighted I am for her and to give her this opportunity was a pleasure. As for Lucky we knew he needed the better ground and have been waiting patiently for it to come. Yesterday he proved he has the ability to win races and hopefully kick on now to the rest of the season 🤞🏻

As many people around the yard know I couldn’t do this without the support and guidance of many people who I will do a separate post about in the coming days but I thank you all massively for making days like this possible.

On the eve of Lucky’s next race we head to Corbridge Races tomorrow. He runs in the first race with Venetia Thompson onboard for her first ever ride on the track. Wishing them both a safe trip round. With the ground drying out every week he will start to come into his own as the season goes on.

Lucky ran Hurworth Point to Point last Saturday. A lovely run in the restricted, making plenty of use of him and his jumping out the front. He had a fantastic run round, getting tired on the ground late on and pulling up just before the last fence. He has come on massively in his last two runs and is showing plenty of enthusiasm in his racing. He is in great shape after the race and we will hopefully get him out in the next couple of weeks before his targets later on in the season. Big thanks to Lyall Hodgins for a cracking spin and everyone else involved for helping make this possible.

Pleased to report from yesterday at Charm Park that Lucky is back in one peice. He ran a greatvrace and jumped lovely. He pulled up with a few fences left but that was expected as he hasn’t ran for 3 years! He should take a big step forward from this and we look forward to getting him out again soon. The highlight of the day was winning best turned out, big thanks to venessa for plaiting him up.

Big thanks to Lyall Hodgins for riding and great help from Duck and Venetia.

Tomorrow we embark on a huge day for the yard. Lucky Lucarno heads to Charm park for his first race in 2 years. Missing last season, this has been a huge effort to get him to this point. No doubt we will move forwards from tomorrow but to see him back in one piece tomorrow would mean the world.

Best of luck to his owners Julie and Dave. Big thanks to Lyall for riding tomorrow.

A positive start to 2024, a change of location for the new season and more importantly a happy horse. Lucky Lucarno is ready to take to the track for the new season. We all have high hopes for him this year and he should give everyone a huge amount of fun. Big thanks for his owners Julie and Dave for all the support though the last year. News on his first run will follow.

Quick update on Lucky since last season. We had a bit of a nightmare season with him really, having a few set backs one after the other which resulted in the season getting away from us. The decision was made to give him an extended summer holiday which is is thriving from and he will be aimed to run in the new year all being well.

24/12/2022

Lucky has been coming on fantastic, he has managed to freshen up nicely with our cold snap. Hopefully the spring weather is on it’s way and we don’t have any more frozen ground.

He worked this morning on the grass, doing fantastic and showed a lot of improvement. We are hoping for a run in early January to start an exciting season off.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and hope everyone has a lovely festive period

29/10/2022

Lucky doing a lovely peice of faster work yesterday. Feeling lovely and moving really well. I rode him yesterday so poor lad had a few more pounds to carry than last week but still did a very good job. He will be aimed at a run on the 27th of November 🤞🏻

26/10/2022

Second update is a more positive one!

Since his colic ordeal he has started his work back for a run on the 27th of November at hexham. He has started his canter work well and now doing this 5 times a week. He has also had 2 peices of faster work which he has taken in his stride. He has put some lovely weight and muscle on that he had lost and we are now back on track for the start of the season.

Big update for you all as it’s been a crazy busy month.

So, firstly a big thank you to everyone on the yard whilst I was away. Lucky had a hungry moment where he decided to eat a large amount of his straw bed which then resulted in him getting a massive compaction collic. This was a serious issue and can result in a lot of horses sadly loosing his life. We were very very fortunate to get him straight down to the intensive care unit Rainbow Equine Hospital who did an amazing job in getting him comfortable and on the mend. After 24 liters of water being passed through him every day he was slowly starting to get through all of the dry matter. It took a total of 6 days at Rainbow but finally I was home and got him back to our yard. He had lost a lot of weight and muscle and definitely deserved the attention on the yard when he came off the box. Massive thanks to Durham Equine Practice and Rainbow Equine Hospital for all their work.

Yesterday I took Lucky down to our local gallop. This was not only a test for his recent splint but also his fitness. He passed with flying colours! He worked 2 and a half miles in a decent canter. This was a good early test for him (and me riding). He is sound and eaten up well this morning so we march on with his training.

13/09/2022

Brilliant news this week. Lucky is back on track, fit and sound. His splint has taken a month to fix but a bit of patience at this time of year will hopefully pay off in the future.

Starting his work off slowly and one way is by using this pasoa. This helps to build up his muscles, helping with his balance and strength. Hopefully by the end of the week we can share another video of some faster work 💨

This weeks update is slightly late due to poor lucky being in the wars. His work was coming on fantastic and he heard that he was going for his first canter last week then he has thrown a splint. Not a major issue but a small set back and a couple of weeks box rest to make sure it has the. Best chance to heal. A mixture of ice boots and also our new fantastic Incrediwear Equine bandages to cool and increase blood flow to the area.

He is otherwise in great form and in no pain, still eating and loving the attention from everyone on the yard. Hopefully our next update is a positive one and he can start his work off again

24/07/2022

After Luckys first two weeks in work. He has been doing some road work and also flat work. This is working in our sand arena where we can do all different types of core strength building which should build us a base to then go and start his faster work later in the year.

He is putting weight on great and has taken to his work fantastically! Roll on his progress through the summer and many more updates to follow

*New recruit*

Welcome Lucky Lucarno to the yard. He is a 10 year old gelding that has been running down the country in point to points with some great success.

He has had a great summer break and started his work this month, ready for an early season start.

More information will be available on him in the near future as there are lease options available for the upcoming season.

Welcome back!

After a year of being very quiet for different reasons, but don’t worry I have been very busy working on the next crop of horses to come into the yard.

As ever all of this wouldn’t be possible without great owners and syndicate members. The love and passion for the horses is fantastic and a pleasure to deal with them all.

Sadly I have made the tough decision to retire Keeper Chris. He was initially bought to have some fun point to pointing and then after I made the decision to have some summer jumping fun we started to be competitive in some nice races. He has won over 5K this season and gave everyone in the syndicate some great day’s out around the country. Highlights are a 2nd at Market Rasen and a 4th in a 18 runner field at Wetherby last month. Sadly in the last year he has had some nasty tumbles and we just can’t risk hurting any jockeys or worse the horse. It was not an easy decision to make but as a syndicate there will be more horses coming in soon.

As for Keeper Chris he has had a few weeks of chill time now and he will be looking for his new home soon.

Both Keeper Chris and Captain Dinosaur working together for the first time today. This was Dinosaurs first time at our grass gallop and he will come on from this loads.

Chris will be ready to run hopefully at the end of March and we look forward to a couple of exciting bits of work ahead. Videos shall follow..

27/02/2021

Weekly update on the crew.

Captain dinosaur is coming on great, as ever horse welfare comes first and this week we have had both horses teeth done and also dinosaur having a session with John Garbett our back and structure specialist. He has been in full work to work along with this and is down the gallop building his ridden work up slowly.

Keeper Chris is in good fettle and we managed to get some faster work done today. That went really well and after a few more bits of work we will be looking at race options. Below you can see some loose schooling of him. Something tells me he may want a big jump.....

21/02/2021

First day on the gallops today for Captain Dinosaur. He was a bit shell shocked at first but soon settled and will come on loads from this work🐎🐎

06/02/2021

Keeper Chris is doing great. I gave him some easy work when we had the bad weather but now that looks to have paused for time time being he has been upped in his work again. We are still waiting for the ground to dry up to go for a gallop and do some faster work.

He has been loose schooling over hurdles and done some more ridden work as well as 25 minutes cantering in the lunge ring. It’s fair to say he is feeling really well in himself and desperate for a gallop. He has come out of his shell loads the past few weeks and from coming out of a big yard to just the 2 horses has done him the world of good.

06/02/2021

Captain Dinosaur is coming on great guns! He has a small cold but that looks to have cleared up nicely and he is now well on his way to being ridden. He is up to 20 minutes cantering in the lunge ring and this week saw us put tack on for the first time. Let’s just say he is a natural, no change in any behaviour at all which is a relief for me! He will be lunged with tack on for the week then look to be ridden away next weekend.
