🔎 Hidden Health Risks in Breeding Black Cats

Breeding black cats requires a commitment to their health and well-being. Understanding and addressing potential health risks ensures these beautiful animals lead long, happy lives.

1️⃣ Genetic Disorders
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM): A heart condition that can lead to heart failure, heightened by selective breeding.
Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD): Leads to kidney cysts and potential failure.

2️⃣ Obesity and Related Issues
Obesity, which can lead to diabetes, arthritis, and shorter lifespans, is a risk for all cats, including black ones. Their dark coat can make weight gain harder to notice.

3️⃣ Skin Conditions
Feline Acne: More noticeable in black cats.
Allergies: Can cause excessive grooming and sores.

4️⃣ Vision Problems
Melanistic cats might have a higher risk of progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), which can lead to blindness.

5️⃣ Behavioural Issues
Black cats often face adoption biases, leading to extended shelter stays and stress-related behaviours.

💜 Responsible Breeding Practices 💜

To mitigate these risks, breeders should consider:
💜 Genetic Testing for early identification of hereditary conditions
💜 Regular Vet Checks for prompt detection and management of health issues
💜 Ethical Breeding to avoid inbreeding and maintain genetic diversity

If you are an ethical cat breeder, today to help us address the health issues that lead to rehoming and make a positive impact to online pet advertising, one paw at a time.

🔎 8 Health Risks in Breeding Goldendoodles

Goldendoodles, a cross between Golden Retrievers and Poodles, are loved for their friendly nature and often hypoallergenic coats. However, breeding them comes with specific health risks that you need to know about.

1️⃣ Hip Dysplasia: A genetic condition affecting the hip joint, leading to pain and mobility issues. Regular screening helps mitigate this risk.

2️⃣ Elbow Dysplasia: Causes lameness and arthritis in the elbow joints.

3️⃣ Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA): A degenerative eye disorder leading to blindness; genetic testing is essential.

4️⃣ Allergies and Skin Issues: Inherited skin allergies can cause itching and infections.

5️⃣ Ear Infections: Floppy ears can trap moisture, leading to infections. Regular cleaning is crucial.

6️⃣ Hypothyroidism: Leads to weight gain, lethargy, and skin problems.

7️⃣ Von Willebrand’s Disease: A genetic bleeding disorder causing excessive bleeding.

8️⃣ Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (Bloat): A life-threatening condition where the stomach twists and fills with gas.

🔬The Science Behind Ocean Eyes

The enchanting blue eyes of Ocean Eye Cats are a result of genetics. The blue color is caused by the lack of pigment and the way light is refracted within the eye. Cats with this eye color often have a form of albinism or carry genes like the Siamese gene, which affects their pigmentation. This genetic trait is also linked to hearing; some blue-eyed cats may experience hearing impairments, particularly if they have white fur.

🐾 Breeds Known for Ocean Eyes

Siamese: Perhaps the most famous for their piercing blue eyes, Siamese cats are elegant and vocal, with a sleek body and large ears.

Ragdoll: These gentle giants are known for their striking blue eyes and affectionate nature. They are large, with semi-long fur and a calm disposition.

Himalayan: A cross between Siamese and Persian cats, Himalayans have the luxurious fur of a Persian and the striking eyes of a Siamese.

Balinese: Similar to the Siamese, but with a longer, silky coat, Balinese cats have the same striking blue eyes and energetic personality.

🐾 5 Health Risks in Breeding White Whippets

White Whippets, though elegant and graceful, come with specific health risks. Ensuring their well-being requires understanding and addressing these issues.

1️⃣ Deafness: The gene for white coat color is linked to congenital deafness, which can affect one or both ears. Early detection through BAER tests is crucial.

2️⃣ Skin Issues: White Whippets are prone to sun sensitivity which means they are at a higher risk of sunburn and skin cancer.

3️⃣ Genetic Disorders: Breeding for white coats can increase the risk of autoimmune disorders and Hip Dysplasia.

4️⃣ Eye Conditions: Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) can lead to blindness. Cataracts may develop earlier than other breeds.

5️⃣ Respiratory Issues: Like many breeds, Whippets can suffer from respiratory problems, which may be exacerbated by selective breeding for specific traits.

If you are an ethical Whippet breeder, today to help us address the health issues that lead to rehoming and make a positive impact to online pet advertising, one paw at a time 💜

Dog Health Tip: Checking Your Pup's Pulse 🐾

Knowing how to check your dog's pulse can be a lifesaver!

Here's a quick guide:

1️⃣ Find the Spot: Locate the femoral artery on the inside of your dog's thigh. Gently press with your fingers to feel the pulse.
2️⃣ Count the Beats: Use a timer to count the beats for 15 seconds. Multiply by 4 to get the beats per minute (BPM).
3️⃣ Normal Rates: For small dogs, 90-140 BPM; for medium to large dogs, 60-90 BPM.

Stay Calm: If the pulse is irregular or too fast/slow, contact your vet immediately.
