Take note not for the faint hearted or the general public in fact!

I’ve seen others posting about the new Channing Tatum movie “Dog” so I wanted to put my thoughts out there. Every time a dog breed is featured in a film, there is a surge in ownership of that breed, without understanding of what that breed is. Malinois are serious dogs, and need a LOT of training. They are amazing, intelligent, driven dogs, but not for most homes. If you see the movie and think, “ it’d be really cool to have a dog like that,” just don’t. You’ll be in over your head, and with a Mal that can be dangerous. So appreciate them, read books about all the cool stuff they have done in war zones, but don’t think that translates to a dog that is content to sleep on the sofa 22 hours a day. As an example of this I present the photo of 2 kitted out special forces soldiers in training, and the most dangerous weapons these guys are carrying wear basket muzzles.

The nutraceutical/supplement industry has boomed in recent years with an estimated annual expenditure of £50,000,000 by UK pet owners. However they are not all effective or helpful. It is a minefield for public and professionals to navigate!

Please remember - supplements are often not a suitable replacement for pain relief when an animal is in pain.
Please don”t shy away from Pain relief that has been prescribed by your vet.
And be careful of marketing claims…. Monitor your dog’s response to supplements and don’t be scared to conclude that something hasn’t been of benefit and stop it rather than wasting precious funds!

I have had an incident with a male dog running into my 3 dogs which were on a lead and a lady who had her puppy on the lead.
Luckily for us I put myself infront of the male dog and the owner finally showed up . After shouting it’s ok he’s friendly.(he clearly wasn’t that well behaved or friendly).
This could have ended differently like below.
So please if you don’t have 100 percent recall put your dog on a long line or keep it on the lead.

The highway code states -
When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly.

If caught with your pet loose in the car whilst driving you could be facing a £5000 fine for careless driving.

Hopefully there is no one driving with an unrestrained dog. Most dogs will likely be in the boot or on the back seat. However have you ever thought what may happen in the event of an accident? Would your dogs be protected?

A dog on a harness could suffer some severe injuries from a high sp*ed accident as many are not crash tested and cannot withstand the powers involved. If they do withstand the powers involved they do not work the same as human seatbelts as the dog can be flung from the seat before the harness then stops them.

For us the safest method to travel your dogs is in a crash tested dog box in the boot of your car. Do your research, it could save your dogs life should the unthinkable happen.

You’re on a walk and you see a dog on a lead. Your dog is running free.

Q: What should you do next?
(Cue *who wants to be a millionaire* music).

Is it:
A: put your dog on a lead
B. Let your dog run over and say hello.
C: Shout “Don’t worry, he’s friendly.”
Or
D: What dog? You were playing candy crush.

The answer is…. A.

Did you get it right?

Many dog owners don’t. They don’t understand what a negatively life-altering situation a rogue dog can be for on-lead walkers.

Here’s why:

Dogs you don’t know could be on lead for 100s of reasons.

They could be blind.
They could be recovering from surgery.
They could be deaf.
They could be aggressive.
They might be scared of being approached by strangers.
They might be training.
They could be a service dog.
They may be a rescue.
They might be terrified of dogs they don’t know.
They could be elderly or physically vulnerable.
They might simply prefer to walk on lead.

In the end, it doesn’t matter why they are on a lead. It’s none of your business. But what is your business is CONSENT.

Leads are a little flag that say “don’t come close”.

When you see them, putting your dog on a lead is respectful. You show the other owner that you CARE about their choice and consent. It doesn’t matter if your dog has 100% perfect recall. You respect the other person and their dog enough to be courteous and kind to uphold everyone’s safety by making absolutely sure everyone is on a lead (no matter how much you trust your dog).

As a person who is often walking a dog on lead for all of many the reasons listed, I can’t tell you how my heart sings when I see someone extend this gesture to me and my pack.

Your dog has no right or business running up to ANYONE (dog or human) without clear PRIOR consent to do so.

You have a responsibility to ensure your dog is in control in a public place. Failing to recall is an offense. It counts as a dog out of control in a public place.

Keeping Pets Secure during fireworks... try this security wrap.

It's purpose is to help keep your paws feel safe & secure, & help them be calmer too.

We have not tried this ourselves but have seen other reviews from paws owners saying it has helped. Let us know if you try this and how it goes.

Fireworks are pretty and great fun, but not so much for our pets, if you’re planning on lighting fireworks maybe let some of your local neighbours know in advance so they are prepared and if they have pets it gives them the opportunity to ensure they are secure & safe.

Dogs have such an acute sense of smell, they can smell incoming weather changes (like storms), learn about their environment, discover different dogs or species that walked before them (which is why that p*e spot is so important!! p*e-mail!), and even smell our emotions.

Yet on walks with our dogs, many commonly have often the "hurry up, let's go" mentality. As we don't have the same acute sense of smell as our dogs, it's not easy to understand or relate to why it's important to let dogs slow down and sniff. We simply can’t smell the way dogs can!

Next time you're on a walk, put the phone away, slow it down and let your dog's nose guide your walk. It'll show you great insights into your dog's behaviour, decrease their stress levels, improve their behaviour as well as their emotional and physical well-being.
