Are you wondering what to get together for your dog kit for your start with Fun Gundog Training.

For starters

Suggest to have a look at the Acme whistle.
Whistle is a key bit of kit and has loads of use when teaching and training your dog.

Hints and Tips

The Acme Whistle is all one section so no bits that drop off the end
Easy to clean - I soak in half a Milton tablet- am sure soap and water work just as well.
No pea inside to get sticky from mouth moisture and then get stuck
Pitch choice dependant on a variety of factors- dog breed and dog pitch preference.We want them to like the sound
Wear on a lanyard- initially a shoe lace is fine. However some nice lanyards around. A friend of mine also makes them so I can put you in touch.
Colours- loads of choice
Easy to source for quick home delivery and sold in many pet shops now

A fisherman spotted her just east of the Faralon Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so badly off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her…. a very dangerous proposition. One slap of the tail could kill a rescuer.
They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her. When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, nudged them, and pushed gently, thanking them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives.
The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth says her eye was following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.
May you be so fortunate to be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you.
And, may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude 🙏

Foundation Pet Gundog classes- new term starting August.

The term runs across 8 weeks , with a term of 6 weeks and does not include a class on the August Bank Holiday.

The classes are foundation level and there will be 2 classes running a 9.30 for the youngsters and an 11.00 for the teenagers .

Who is the class for?

• Designed for pet dogs who are in the gundog families e.g spaniel, retriever, labrador
• The class covers obedience/ steadiness behaviours
• Provides an outlet for dogs instincts to retrieve and sniff
• Teaches training games, to help you teach your dogs e.g to focus on you verses the environment,
• Teach core skills of focus and engagement,stay,recall, loose lead walking, retrieving toys and
• Loads of fun when training and always taught with kindness and reward based training.

What support is available between lessons?

You will be invited to a private Facebook group where training games and support will be posted.

It is a safe, kind and supportive environment for both groups of dogs.

Please note that as the courses are designed for Pet Gundogs there is no focus on the shooting environment. If this is what you are looking for I can refer you to a trainer who specialises in this area.

On a beautiful frosty morning playing a tuggy game with my girl.

You will see that I am aiming on reversing and keeping her in a straight line. Loads of opportunity for her to win the game.

Also when she has picked up the toy I reverse away from her, patting my thighs and make encouraging praise remarks as she comes back to me.

I also keep my hands off the toy when we stop the tuggy part of the fun so she gets used to being around me with a hold( toy in her mouth)

This is a great game for encouraging a retrieve with your dog coming in. No pressure , loads of fun for both of you

Some of our dogs can develop the habit of chewing the toggle or the flap at the end of the dummy.
For those dogs, am using these dummys produced by Hi lost to reduce this pattern developing
You can see from the picture below of 1/2lb and 1lb dummy no toggle or end flap.
There is a company tag on the dummy. I cut those off.
Yellow 1/2 lb dummy has the label.Green 1lb dummy has label removed.

I have had a number of queries in the last few days about whistle pips. So hope this helps.
I tend to use 5 pips for recall. Pip pip pip pip pip
1 pip for stop Piiiiiiiiiiiiiip
2 pips for each change of direction Pip Pip

I tend to start the whistle training with recall practice and pair meal delivery with the whistle recall pips. Starting with the pips as the bowl goes down and then as the youngster ideally is further away. Using the whistle pips to bring them to the food bowl. You can progress this to your dog being in a different room and then whistle pips recall.

Hi folks , I am receiving a fair few enquiries about how to support young puppies in their foundation behaviours for learning to pick up, hold and retrieve a dummy.

Some thoughts below

TRAINING A PUPPY
If your dog is a puppy, you want to be careful not to begin gundog training too early. Dogs are always learning, so any younger than eight months and it’s likely you’ll have to re-teach a lot of the skills later on.

Praise your puppy any time he picks up a toy. This will encourage him to retrieve when out in the field.

Try to intersperse training exercises with general walking and play. For example, memory retrieval is a very easy technique you can feed into your regular walks. This is where you’ll drop a dummy but encourage your pup to walk away from it, staying alongside you on the lead. After a reasonable distance, let him off the lead to retrieve the dummy. Reward him when he does.

Don’t overdo training sessions, or make your puppy repeat too many tasks or retrievals at once. This can cause damage to the joints, which cannot be undone. If you have children or an older dog, your pup may already be getting more exercise than you think!

Oh yes and remember 5 minutes per month walking on road / tarmac or pavement . Protect those growth plats

We play the This way game to help support the development of quartering skills . Our spaniels are instinctively good at quartering, hunting retrievers can also learn to quarter but need to keep the distance near to the handler as they tend to range further.
