I've been a bit quiet here whilst I have not been able to take on any new clients.... but I have some news....
I'm a Clinical Animal Behaviourist! 🎉

A week ago today I received the news that I had passed my APBC assessment for full membership at Clinical Animal Behaviourist level. As such, I am now able to be listed as an accredited CAB with the Animal Behaviour and Training Council. Very very very proud moment.

This is something I have been working towards for many years. I feel immensely proud to have gone through the APBC assessment process and to a part of this organisation. I have been a provisional member of APBC since 2017 and have spent many years learning from colleagues, mentors, pets, and their humans - and will continue to do so ! We are ALWAYS learning !

I look forward to being available to take on new dog cases (behaviour referrals) from October 2024. 👀

❤️💙

⚠️ I am currently taking a break from taking on new clients, to spend time with family.

This means I am not able to provide behaviour consultations and will not be booking any training classes until further notice.

💙 I will continue to offer support to current and previous behaviour clients.

🐾 If you are a caregiver looking for a behaviourist, please ensure they are either CAB/CCAB, or working towards this.

🐕‍🦺 If you are a caregiver looking for a dog trainer, please ensure they are positive reinforcement based and ethical (not balanced!)

↪️ A good place to start is the Animal Behaviour and Training Council : www.abtc.org.uk

🩺 Vets, educators and other paraprofessionals, please do still get in touch if I can be of any assistance.

🙋‍♀️ I may still post and I will remain active(ish) on my professional Instagram page ()

I will update this page when I am able to take on clients again. In the meantime, wishing you all a wonderful 2024. ✌️

The Cooperative Care course is finished!
🩺💉🪥

These dogs and their humans have been working so hard to establish the important rules of the cooperative care game. Whilst training for this is ongoing , both dogs are now at the stage where handling is being progressed and the dogs are learning how they can "opt in" and "opt out" of handling. This should help empower them by giving them choice in situations of handling, grooming, veterinary treatment etc, which ultimately makes for a more pleasant experience! 💙

Well done Bella and Cali! (And their amazing humans!)🐾🐾

Building Blocks level 2 course with these gorgeous pups is complete! I feel so blessed to have been part of their training journey. It's been wonderful seeing the relationship between these dogs and their humans develop. Together we have seen the pups as they go through adolescence, overcome challenges, learn new things, and grow in confidence. What a lovely bunch!

Today I was in Wi******er for a day of CPD. PACT 's DogX conference was absolutely fantastic! A brilliant line up of speakers who all provided such insightful talks, hosted by a lovely organisation, and an opportunity to catch up with some beautiful humans.

See you next year ✌️ 🐶

I have now been a proud provisional member of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC) for over 6 years!

It has been a busy 6 years, but I think it's about time to put my focus into applying for assessment for full membership soon 🤔 👀

A 2024 goal / New Year's resolution I think! 🤞💙

Can you guess my dog's DNA results?! 🐾🧬

Tom is my 10, almost 11 year old mutt from Spain who I adopted almost 9 years ago. He was taken in by a rescue in Spain (SOS Animas) when he was just a pup. I met his mother, who is Toms colour but much smaller. I have always thought he is likely mixed with a Podenco, given is long legs, big ears and sighthound like features. After thinking about it for years, I finally sent off a sample for DNA analysis, and the results are not what I expected. Results came back today and really made me giggle, so I wanted to share!

Tom has apparently got lots of breeds in his DNA. Some uncommon, some very common!
Can you get which breeds ? 🤣

Comment below and I will share results soon!

🔷 🔷 Breaking habits for training can be hard! 🔷🔷

This week, I tried out rains on my little girl, for the first time.

I automatically held them in the hand that I use to hold a lead (furthest away from child) and moved my bumbag to the opposite side, like I would a treat-pouch!! I giggled at this and made a conscious effort to ignore the urging habit. However, I then also found myself automatically stopping when the rains became tight and making every effort to keep them slack
.....I was essentially unintentionally loose lead training my daughter 🤦‍♀️😳

This was a reminder to me that habits are hard to break!

The application of loose lead walking training can be tricky to wrap our heads around at first, but with practice comes new habits and with consistency comes change.

And in case you are wondering, yes, my bumbag is essentially a treat pouch for my toddler. 🍪

The APBC does not believe, and sees no evidence, that banning a particular breed/type of dog has worked in the past, or will work now.

There is no evidence that the American XL Bully and its variations are more predisposed to aggressive and erratic behaviour, than other dogs.

Regardless of breed, type or size, all dogs, including American XL Bullies, require responsible ownership.

Clearly, the stronger and more powerful the dog, the greater the responsibility on us humans to keep everyone safe.

The APBC recommends that a more considered approach is required to address the growing problem of dog-related injuries.

The situation is complex and an effective solution involves addressing the breeding and responsible sourcing of dogs, education on responsible dog ownership and enforcing animal welfare laws in order to protect both the public and dogs.

📢 Shout out to Britanie (and her beautiful dog Bella).

Some of you have met this lovely lady before, some have not. Britanie has been helping out at my puppy classes for a few months now and provides demonstrations of training exercises in class. She is also a teat provider, Kong refiller and an excellent photographer during class! Britanie is fantastic with both the dogs and humans - all qualities that make for great dog trainer!

Britanie is also a Registered Veterinary Nurse with a keen interest in reducing patient stress. Her enthusiasm for wanting to learn more, do more, and create change is refreshing. I hope to be able to help Britanie on her behaviour journey as much as possible. Many years ago a fantastic dog trainer and behaviourist took me under their wing and helped me grow my knowledge, experience and confidence. I am still friends with this person today and forever thankful for their guidance, support and encouragement. Time to pay it forward.

Thank you Britanie 💞 🐾

*ALL CLASSES TODAY HAVE BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO HEAT*

Three courses were due to start this afternoon at the hottest time of the day (highs of 27!). Although this is an indoor venue I am not comfortable going ahead in this heat. Dog safety and comfort is priority.

All pup parents have been contacted via the WhatsApp support groups and I am in the process of organising a replacement session 🙂

All courses (Level 1, Level 2, and Cooperative Care) will now start next Saturday 16th September at the same time.

There are still a couple spaces left on Level 1 and Cooperative Care - If anyone would like to book on, do get in touch!

Hope you are all having a good day and doing your best to keep your dogs cool 💧
