It can be difficult to work out what’s best for the dogs in this weather. They love their walks, and will still want to go bounding out the house at their regular walkies time, so we have to be the boring and responsible ones and make the decision based on their best interests, not what they want. It’s easy to think that they’d let us know of it was too hot, but they often dont realise that it is. The below is a good guide to safe temperatures and when we need to be cautious.

It can be tricky to manage the balance between making sure they get the stimulation they need and the weather too. High energy dogs will become bored and agitated without exercise and sometimes it’s just not possible to not take them on some sort of walk in a day.

Here are some tips to help reduce these problems:
If you can keep them in, dogs love playing games - Hide treats around the room and get them to sniff them out. Snuffle mats are great to keep them entertained and easy to make yourself with some tied up old rags. I chase the big dog round the house, and it gives me a work out too!
If you have to go out, try to be as early or late as possible. Keep it shorter and calmer than normal if you can, maybe skip or reduce the ball throwing. If you can, get into the woods where it’s cooler and the ground won’t get as hot

Please try not to take dogs out into the sunshine in the heat of the day, especially road walking. This is the real danger zone. Remember, dogs don’t die from missing a walk
