🙌 Your horse is an athlete, and should be treated as one! 🙌

Your horse has muscles and fascia, just like us, so they are just as likely, if not
More likely, to get sore, tight and uncomfortable muscles! This in turn, will restrict movement and inhibit performance.

What a release this chap is showing here!
Manual massage and red LED phototherapy, were used to help break down areas of tension in Doug’s lumbar area.
Yawning, is just one of the many signs of release in horses undergoing treatment. By yawning, the horse is showing that he is relaxed, and the area of tension is being released! Post release, oxygen and blood bring nutrients to the area, and remove toxins (usually lactic acid build up)

Such a pleasure to treat this lovely mare on Friday.
Kinesiology tape was applied to help with muscle tightness and promote recovery. Post fascia release work, due to some thoraco-lumbar restriction, the tape was applied, with the intention to prolong the effect of the work.

**** All horses that I treat, must initially undergo a one off, full assessment. ****

The client will be asked to walk and trot up their horse.
This static and dynamic assessment , allows the therapist to analyse the horse’s conformation, in addition to how they move.
This enables the therapist to ascertain any problems causing, or likely to affect performance.
It also allows us to identify possible musculoskeletal issues, based on the initial assessment.

I am often asked what signs and symptoms a horse could display, that could signal the need for a sports massage treatment?

Indications for massage/myofascial release include:

🐴 Reluctance to canter on one rein/ struggling to pick up the correct canter lead
🐴 hollow back/ high head carriage
🐴 cold backed
🐴 displaying unusual behaviour (eg) bucking/rearing/headshaking
🐴 uneven stride length
🐴 uncomfortable on palpating/ when being groomed
🐴 carrying tail to one side
🐴 cinchy
🐴 lateral stiffness/ stiffness on one rein
🐴 lack of bend

However….. an important piece of the puzzle missing here, I feel. Time must be taken to assess the horse for signs of chronic, low grade pain, as this often leads to displays of perceived bouts of “naughtiness”.
A discussion with your qualified therapist could lead to investigating this.

Appropriate article for this scorcher of a weekend🌞☀️ Good idea to keep a close eye on fluid consumption 👍👍

This weekend is a hot one with temperatures reaching 29°c 🥵☀️

An average horse can drink up to 10-15 gallons of water in hot weather like this, that’s anywhere from 50 to 68 litres! Best to keep those waters clean, easy to access and topped up at all times 😊

How to test if your horse is dehydrated:
A test that you can do to check if your horse is dehydrated is the ‘skin-pinch test’. To do this pinch the skin near the point of the shoulder, If the skin snaps back quickly then your horse is sufficiently hydrated. If it takes the skin a few seconds to snap back, or a crease is left, this often means that your horse is moderately dehydrated.

A great tip for giving your horse a boost of hydration in this weather is to give your horses watermelon! 🍉😀 it’s a yummy treat which is completely safe and is made up of 92 percent water 💦 A horse will still need water, but ingesting watermelon can help 😊
