Should I use high value rewards when training?

When training any dog, I always encourage clients to offer some form of reward for the right behaviours as a means of reinforcement. However increasing the value of each reward will only result in an increase in demand from your dog. In an ideal world, we want our dogs to work for “minimum wage” regardless of the behaviour in question.

BIG NEWS - We’re hiring!
Kentwone Dogs is now looking to take on a full time assistant / trainee trainer.
The role will be 5 days a week Monday - Friday, plus the occasional Saturday where necessary.
Generous hourly pay with opportunity to grow with the business!

What we are looking for?
- All applicants must be 21 years or older.
- Hold a CLEAN UK driving licenses with your own transport.
- Reasonably strong and fit.
- Prior experience working or owning dogs.
- Hard working, reliable.
- Great customer service and conversation skills is a must!

Starting roughly Mid August 2024.
Please note this is a long term role and not suitable as a “summer job”.

Let’s talk about Muzzles….

Whilst this is a hot topic in the press these days (rightly or wrongly), a muzzle remains a training tool and should NOT be associated with the big and the bad!
Some dogs are muzzled for their own safety and those around them.
Some dogs are muzzled for health or dietary reason.
Some dogs are muzzled for training purposes.

It is vital to remember that a muzzled dog is not a bad dog nor is it something any owner should be ashamed of!

Darcy is a one year old Slovakian Pointer. As I’m sure you can imagine, she is a real show stopper (literally) and get lots of attention wherever we go. She is bursting with character and, not to mention, gorgeous!
Darcy has been with us since day one; joining the team for some regular group walks as well as some loose lead training.

The AODN (Art Of Doing Nothing)!

Many dog owners underestimated the value of teaching our dogs to “do nothing” in stimulating situations/ environments. Allowing our dogs to observe their surroundings without actually having to be involved, helps to create a balanced dog moving forward.
If a dog is unable to switch off when they are out, it’s can cause issues like anxiety and unsociable behaviours.

How to communicate better with your dog…. Talk less!

Repeating commands or asking for a behaviour in five different ways won’t get you anywhere. Commands can quickly become devalued if the desired behaviour does not follow.

Our dogs are masters at reading body language. Using our posture and demeanour to assert the behaviour we are looking for, makes communication a lot easier.
