What a busy week to finish the year off with!

On Monday, we had Suki, Ziggy, Buddy and Elsie for trailing in Sale. All teams did exceptionally well, with some even doing starts off the scent!

On Tuesday, in their Week 5 Bronze course, we looked at aged trails. Each trail was about 20 minutes aged AND they did their first taste to scent article! Well done to Bailey, Ava, Odin and Whisper

On Wednesday, the scent introduction group completed their course with a trailing session in Sale. Daphne, Mila and Colten hit Sale practising their sniffing skills

On Thursday, we said goodbye to Digger and Daisy for the Christmas break, ready to start again in the New Year with their weekly cuddles and walks. We also completed a scent session with Enzo in Urmston as part of his 1-1 scent introduction course ready to start the Bronze Grade One classes in the New Year

Then today we had Odin, Chip, Whisper and Sadie in Lymm, again, finding some missing people and dogs! We also ‘spotted’ Chester the Dalmatian on our travels (get it?! 😉)

So that’s 16 dogs, all satisfied and enriched through the joy of working, cuddling and most importantly… eating treats! I do apologise for missing some photography for a few!

Bronze Grade Two have their last session next week, before their big day at the Bronze Christmas Trial 😮🎄

Well done everyone, I’d say ready for me to switch off but off to walk the feral ferret and Tilly dog😂

Having completed Hannah’s puppy course with the feral ferret and the trick course with Tillydog earlier in the year, I can confidently recommend her classes ❤️

The courses are everything I’d want in a class and more

Thanks Hannah!

This weeks goal with Crazy Clover… achieving a settle outside of her crate.

The crate has been huge in her ability to fully switch off and rest regularly, both in the car and the house however we havent quite mastered being able to settle when out the crate. She becomes very mouthy when she’s tired and prefers my fingers to a toy or chew so I often ask her to go into the crate to switch off instead.

She could struggle to settle out of the crate due to age and breed (everything so exciting) , Tilly’s presence (lots more interesting movement in the room), new expectation of the outside area etc. I’m not expecting huge things but to be able to have her lying down engaging with a toy or chew and not constantly wiggling would be great 😂

My first go to with Clover is just to have a bed at my feet and her on the harness and lead with a good chew. I also offer plenty of tit bits in succession of eachother whilst she’s in a down on the bed to reinforce the position, I can then begin to delay the food.

The difficulty comes from being a multi-dog household as Tilly needs managing too being the food beg she is! So Tilly will also be tethered on the other side of the room, or upstairs having some puppy-free time.

There’s plenty of methods and I’ll be seeing what works for her over the weekend. I’d love to get her to be able to settle around people and be a pub dog 🍺 Send me hope and a prayer!

Ne Po Po NONSENSE

NePoPo ridiculously stands for negative-posiitve-positive. It's a false premise suggested by shock collar trainers to make this more palatable to the un-educated.

Negative - shock is applied
Positive - shock is removed
Positive- reward (toy/food) is given.

The driving force behind this for the dog is the avoidance/escape from the shock, the reward is a poor third prize.

Let's break it down further.

I drag you to a social event which you don't want to go to. You cannot say no, despite hating the people there. I decide when you leave, based on some arbitrary behaviour you may or may not be aware of. We leave and I take you for chips.

What is the driving force behind all your motivation to do the behaviour I desire? Avoidance or escape of the party. Escaping isn't a positive if I took you there against your will. Relief, while creating a good feeling, needs something to be relieved from.

Compare that to this scenario. I want to take you to a party. You don't like the people there but you decide to go. You can say no. You tell me when you want to leave and we leave. Then we go for chips.

See the difference.

NePoPo dogs are subjected to version 1.

They are not the same. If you can't see it, your deluded, uneducated, unethical, or blind.

Let's do better.

N.B. I'm not interested in discourse/argument on this. If you promote, endorse, justify or excuse the use of aversive training methods and equipment, you will have no voice here.

Now this is correct socialisation!!

New textures, objects, sounds, smells, noises, places, movements etc if done in moderation at the dogs pace is what works best for a well rounded pup!

Unfortunately most people think meeting lots of dogs and people is the way forward but this can be a road to reactivity. Most of my clients who work with me for reactivity sent their dogs to daycare or allowed them to greet anyone and everyone which unfortunately can cause problems later in life.

Most of the session today, we worked on exposure within Clover’s means, and not greeting strangers. It can be a bit awkward telling someone no when they’ve asked to say hello but I’d rather an awkward exchange than years of hyper arousal and reactivity!

Ps if I say please dont touch her, this should automatically include no food, no fuss, no crouching and making kissing noises to her 🫣 THEN it gets super awkward for everyone 😂

Coco had her first trailing session this morning. After a phone call to make sure we can accommodate for her ‘German Shepherdness’, we set a a few trails which she absolutely aced! She’s going to be a natural. What’s lovely to see is her reactivity is reduced when she’s trailing as she has a job to do and is focusing on working. Coming back to get her ready for her turn, she was even lying down in the middle of the pavement 😁 Very happy and content

Suki has completed several trails now and interestingly smashes difficulties but can struggle at junctions (typical spaniels doing a millions side missions) as she’s very fast so we slowed things down and added extra scent to help her make her turns. Unfortunately she couldn’t go through the houses which would have made her life easier as she knew Coco was in the alley behind!

We have one spot for tomorrow’s session in Urmston at 18:30pm, and the 9th December in Sale 🐕‍🦺🦮

I wanted to just highlight the importance of controlled exercise and movements for puppies with these pictures

You may hear people say ‘walk your puppy around 5 minutes per month of their age’, or ‘don’t let them jump on the sofa’s, in and out the cars, or run up and down the stairs’

Well this is why. These pictures are just THREE WEEKS APART!! You don’t see the huge growth spurts when you see the puppy all the time until you look back at comparison pictures.

Puppies arent fully developed until around 1.5/2years (depending on breed/size) which means their bones and joints are still growing, not to mention the psychological development too!

By over exercising, you can really affect how your puppies grow and potentially cause issues later in their lives.

Clover has enforced rest in her crate after EVERY walk and most times through the day to let her body and mind reset rather than be on the go all the time. This helps with her growing and development, but also teaches her to switch off and stops her mouthing because she’s over tired (and gives me a couple of hours of nap time 😂)

Two things this post highlights;

How brilliant these guys are at their scent work! We looked at hidden scent articles in boots, hoof picks, brushes, hats etc and they got them all!

If you remember a few weeks back we focused on Digger settling outside which was a HUGE improvement due to his reactivity to dogs and sometimes children/noises….. he only went to settle indoor yesterday too!!!

HUGE pride towards Digger and his owner, such a dream team ❤️

It’s a slow introduction to settle work and I’m not expecting him to fully switch off in a busy environment yet but to be busy and mind his business is so so lovely to see

Is there any dog out there who doesn’t love a bit of Primula Cheese?😂

We’re expecting snow (I’ll believe it when I see it!) or icy weather this week so classes, 1-1’s and walks may be altered/cancelled

I’ll message those affected directly if anything does change ⛄️
