🙌Palpation 🙌

Palpation plays a fundamental part in assessing a horse with the aim to detect and quantify the degree of pain a horse may be in. When im palpating im assessing for the following things:

👐Heat
👐Inflammation
👐Soft tissue elasticity
👐Muscle mass
👐Quality of joint end feel
👐 Scar tissue or adhesions
👐Muscle wastage and assymetry

🌟 Protraction stretches 🌟

Here i am taking the forelimb into a protraction stretch which is a type of passive stretch. This is where the physio will take the limb through it’s range of motion (within range of that joint ) into a stretch without muscle contraction.

Benefits:

✔️ Helps with injury prevention
✔️ Improved stride length through increasing range of motion
✔️ Aids better circulation
✔️ Decreases muscle soreness

I find horses particularly relax into these forelimb protraction stretches 😴
Make sure to ask your physio to show you how to carry out these stretches safely if you would like to do them with your horse.

Today I attended the IRVAP Annual Conference in Leicester which counted towards 7 hours of CPD (continuous professional development). This was a very informative day of learning from some of the best professionals in the industry as well as having the opportunity to network and catch up with friends. There was lots to take away from the day and will definitely be attending again next year!

Using laser therapy this morning to help treat a horse with bone spavin. Bone spavin is osteoarthritis of the lower tarsus joint in the hock which is the final stages of degenerative joint disease.

How does laser help?

✔️ Anti-inflammatory effects
✔️ Repair, regenerate and remodel tissue

Why have regular maintenance physio and not just for recovery after injury ?

For injury prevention! Physio's can identify and help resolve subtle problem areas before they become a bigger issue and impact performance.

Other benefits:

✔️Improves muscle balance and symmetry
✔️Increases flexability amd suppleness
✔️Relieve pain
✔️ Enhanced performance

Physiotherapy benefits all horses in all disciplines and of all ages. Case dependent, but as a general rule of thumb I advise treatments to be quarterly throughout the year if its for maintenance to ensure your four legged friends are feeling on top form and can perform at their best for you.

Vibration Therapy can be used to stimulate blood circulation throughout the body, and can be used to treat inflammation, speed up the healing process, reduce pain, and aid in the prevention of injury.

A maintenance treatment for this special boy today! I know i shouldn't have favourites (🤫) but Jake is definitely up there... I've known Jake for a while now and he is such an affectionate horse with a gentle soul. He was also one of the first horses i treated once i qualified! 🥰

To be registered with IRVAP you can be assured the following:

✅️Continue to enhance skills and knowledge through carrying out mandatory hours annually of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) after qualfication to be able to hold a membership with this accredited authority.
