600 likes for my page. Thanks everyone. I'm not doing housecalls during the Covid crisis, but I'm doing socially distanced training walks. These last a total of two hours. I'd prefer it if you could come and meet me in Wigan, but I'm prepared to travel. Pre-Covid, my method is to come to your house and train you and the dog where you all feel most comfortable. I've tried out this new method a few times and the owners have been happy with the results.

Dog Training With Treats – Is Food Really Necessary?

You can train them with or without. People use food because it's easy to do. Most do it wrong, and use the food as a bribe. Now, your dog's not stupid. He'll see sit as a treat, so he'll manipulate you so every time he sits, you give him a reward. Food should be used wisely. At first a reward for doing what you ask, sit, stay, every time. Then 1 every 3 times he responds to the command. Soon he'll do it on cue, because he thinks there might be a reward. So you have taken control of the precious food. It's precious to a dog because in the wild, they don't know when they will next eat. So they wolf (see what I did there?) the food down quick sharp. A treat doesn't need to be food necessarily. It can be a ball, a toy, a stroke...Simple, yet highly effective, with not a clicker in sight!

Sadly, for the greater good, all bookings have had to be cancelled. Hope everyone stays healthy and happy.

If anyone has real concerns about their dog's behaviour, I'll be happy to take telephone consultations, free of charge, (first15 mins), whilst we are on lockdown.

In the meantime, please take a look at how the usually reactive GSD handles meeting many new dogs. Her owner always had her on a lead, because she feared that the dog would run off at the mere sight of another dog. Here she has the option to run, there's nothing stopping her. But, she chooses to stay close to the Alpha (Me) because she knows I'm the safe bet.

Emma's owner phoned me on a Saturday night. She was in tears because of how Emma had been treated by someone who her daughter had trusted to look after her. She cowered at any noises. She was scared of all men.....I calmly told her what she should do to gain Emma's trust. We talked for over an hour and agreed to make an appointment the day after.
Anyway Sunday came and Sylvia rang me, again in tears. This time she was elated! She said Emma's behaviour had changed completely since she started using the techniques I gave her the night before. So I never did get paid for training Emma, but I found a friend for life in Sylvia.

This is 30 minutes after Bruce's first time walking without a lead. This a real life situation, no set-up. The road is quite busy, so it was a leap of faith on my part. I thought it wouldn't be any problem getting him into the car without the need for a lead.

Gemma-German Shepherd Cross
Gemma was a dog who I trained in secret. Her owners were the landlords of my local pub, and didn't really pay her any attention. However, I did. These are pictures from the first time I took her for a walk.

This is video 4 of 4. Bella's owners rang me in a state of despair. They had no experience of owning dogs and were finding her an impossible task. She had zero recall, to the point they nearly just gave up on her and walked away. You can hear their exasperation during our session. This is after an initial session in their home. As you will see, the park was very busy with all manner of distractions.

Humane Trainers-Mission Statement

Imagine, it's your first day at work. You've had no training, then your boss comes over and tells you what to do, in Chinese! This is exactly how your dog feels, it cannot possibly be expected to understand what we say to it. It has it's own canine language, which it understands perfectly. If the dog cannot understand our language, we must learn how to understand its. This doesn't mean barking or scratching ourselves. It means understanding the vast array of canine body language, which we can then use to our advantage. The service that I offer is an insight into this canine world. When we begin to see things from the dogs perspective, we can understand why it behaves how it does. This gives us the platform to start to correct all the behaviour that we don't like. I don't offer a quick fix, a sticking plaster to mask over the problems. What I do is spend a couple of hours explaining how to read canine behaviour. This is a totally transparent process, I prefer every member of the household to be present. Every question will be answered and I will not duck any issue. This method is so effective that it usually takes an initial 2 hours. In this time I will impart the knowledge that will last a lifetime. Usually I spend a further hour after 2 weeks, another after a month. I am also happy to take telephone consultations during this period, free of charge. After the first visit, I also offer a training walk service, to reinforce the principles that have been previously taught.
