I was so sad to hear the news yesterday of the passing of Karen Pryor. An amazing teacher and trainer whom I was so lucky to learn from at Europes first Clicker Expo.

We are deeply saddened to learn of Karen Pryor's passing. She was a pioneer in animal training and behaviour whose contributions have shaped modern dog training as we know it. Her innovative approach and entrepreneurial spirit transformed the industry, paving the way for countless trainers and animals to benefit from science-based, positive reinforcement methods.

Karenโ€™s work extended far beyond the Karen Pryor Academy, which has educated and inspired trainers worldwide. Her book, Donโ€™t Shoot the Dog, introduced an entire generation of trainers to the principles of clicker training and remains a cornerstone of dog training literature. The annual Clicker Expos she founded became vital opportunities for professional growth, collaboration, and community-building within the field. Her legacy also includes Reaching the Animal Mind, a profound exploration of the science and art of animal training.

Karenโ€™s vision, intelligence, and compassion revolutionised how we communicate with and understand our canine companions. Her contributions have had a lasting impact on the lives of trainers and the dogs they work and live with. She will be greatly missed, but her legacy will continue to inspire and guide the animal training community for generations to come.

Our thoughts are with Karenโ€™s family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched.

The recent publication of the study titled Comparison of the Efficacy and Welfare of Different Training Methods in Stopping Chasing Behavior in Dogs (Johnson and Wynne, 2024) has sparked significant debate across the animal welfare community. This study, which adds to the growing body of evidence on the adverse effects of shock collars (e-collars), highlights serious concerns regarding the welfare of dogs subjected to this training method. Please see our Statement relating to this via our News page at https://abtc.org.uk/about/news/

What signs should a caregiver look for that their dog may be in pain?

Pain can be either acute or chronic and the signs can be quite different. Acute pain is associated with obvious behavioural changes such as limping, vocalising with whimpering or yelping and obviously protecting parts of the body that are hurting, for example by being tucked up and tense in the body posture or holding a paw off the floor. Acute pain may also lead to an obvious behaviour such as growling or biting when someone attempts to touch a part of the body that is hurting. Chronic pain is far more difficult to identify because the signs are often more subtle and more open to misinterpretation. This means that it can very difficult to detect chronic pain through a simple veterinary examination and identifying signs of chronic pain involves observation of the dog at home and asking questions about the pet's behaviour. The specific signs will vary depending on the location of the pain but common behavioural changes include lowered motivation to engage in social interactions, changes in mobility, for example refusal to get in or out of the car, reluctance to go on a walk, reduction in interest in play, reluctance to walk on slippery surfaces, changes in posture, such as sitting with the bodyweight shifted to one side or being reluctant to adopt a lying down posture. Behavioural changes may also be seen such as increased sensitivity to sounds, reduced tolerance of other pets in the household, reactivity to people who attempt to move or touch them. If a pet shows any change in behaviour it is always important to talk to your vet.
