It's widely thought in gundog and other training circles that aversive training methods are the only way to train a dog not to chase game/wildlife (or the football in the park!)...

This couldn't be further from the truth and is proven by myself and many other reward based trainers 🙂

The situation unfolding in Afghanistan is horrifying and for those of us living in safety, the feeling of helplessness is overwhelming.

However, there is a way that the veterinary community, animal lovers or anyone who wants to reach out, can make a real difference and save lives.

The amazing charity Nowzad has worked for years in this remarkable country; rescuing animals, educating people and training veterinary staff, many of whom are women and who are now in terrible danger.

They are getting out and they are aiming to bring ALL their staff, their families and the pets in their care with them. The founder Pen Farthing, has vowed to not leave Kabul until 'Operation Ark' has been achieved.

They are asking for funds to hire a cargo plane and also for us all to lobby our MPs to ensure their people are placed on the UK rescue list.

When Oscar hit his second fear impact period he suddenly developed a very strong fear of travelling and would become extremely anxious when anywhere near a car.

Over the last few months with a lot of hard work desensitising and counter conditioning he has made huge progress and is now happy to enter the car.

With the hard work and dedication of his family we hope he will soon be confident enough to go on short journeys and eventually on holiday with his family 🐾

Due to the forecasted temperature this weekend, we have taken to decision to postpone our social walk in Newent Glos on Sunday, this is now scheduled for Sunday 25th July.

This acts as a timely reminder to please take care of your dogs, whatever breed, in these hot temperatures. We'd love to see how your dogs are keeping cool!

In the same way that us humans don't like everyone we meet, dogs don't necessarily like or want to interact with every other dog they meet.

By being mindful of this we can avoid dogs or individuals as necessary as well as allow our dogs to interact with their preferred social circles 🐾

Teaching a dog to settle or park and to learn to "do nothing" is a valuable life skill for any dog, particularly a working spaniel like Patch 🐾

Patch picked this up really quickly in our session last week and has since been out practicing in cafe's with his mum 🐾 ☕

Contrary to popular belief, dogs that pull on the leash while being walked do not want to be pack leader, top dog, alpha, or dominant over their human. There is a much simpler explanation: dogs love to be outside, and the walk is a stimulating and exciting part of their day, so the desire to push ahead is very strong.
