Sharing via our sighthound friends ❤️ If you live in and around Lakenheath area and love Greyhounds feel free to contact them directly Xx Whippet Retreat can not be held responsible for any hearts that are stolen during your time volunteering! 💖 But would love to hear all about it!! We happen to know some fabulous sighthound homeboarders too ! Xx

Could you help with walking, grooming, cuddling the dogs? Would you like to foster for us to get one of our longer stay residents some home experience and socialising? Maybe DIY is your thing & with spring coming you can help keep the kennels in good order? HRH Eastern Counties Branch is near Lakenheath so if you fancy getting involved message us!

Yesterday adventures took us far out across fields and along in amongst the brambles!
Spot Ivy-pearl hiding!
A crisp cool walk with large deep frozen ice patches best avoided ❄️
We had a great time..... and I spotted a beautiful healthy 🦊 hunting ❤️ ( the girls didn't even see it , or react at all !)

We really don't like having to make posts like these, but this is the sad reality of rescue at the moment. We desperately need forever homes who can help us with Whippets who have more complex needs, specifically lead reactivity.

It's a very scary and overwhelming time for all rescues at the moment, but the numbers we are seeing through Whippet rescue really have reached an all time high. We are only 10 days into the new year, and we have already been contacted to help 8 Whippets. We also have 16 Whippets who were surrendered to us towards the end of 2024 who will be moving to their forever homes in the coming weeks.

Although we aren't always active in social media, we are always working tirelessly behind the scenes. Homechecks, transport runs, phone calls and emails happen all day, every day, so that we can help as many Whippets in need as possible.

I'm sure you can appreciate that all dogs are surrendered to rescue for a reason. These reasons vary, but the thing we see the most of is severe lead reactivity, and sadly, reactive dogs tend to take a long time to find new homes. We know it isn't possible or practical for everyone to have a reactive dog, but if you have the time and understanding to help them it really can be so rewarding.

Most reactive dogs are extremely gentle and loving in the home, some can even live with other dogs and children. Their reactivity when out on walks is usually based on fear, rather than aggression, so they just need understanding, and support with consistant training to help them feel safe so they can blossom into wonderful pets. In more severe reactivity cases the dogs would benefit from homes with nice size gardens to enjoy daily, and being taken to a private secure field a few times a week for zoomies, rather than going out for daily walks.

We receive thousands of adoption applications each year, but the amount of people who are able to offer a highly reactive dog a home is incredibly low unfortunately. Our experienced foster homes, who are able to deal with reactivity, are filling up fast, and it's getting to the point where we are going to struggle to continue to help reactive Whippets unless we can find homes for the ones we currently have in our care.

We desperately need sensible and understanding forever homes for reactive Whippets. We are able to help with training costs where needed, but we need adopters who can commit to offering the dogs the help they need to thrive and can also offer them the safe home environment they need.

You can find out more about reactive dogs on the link here (written for Greyhounds but the same applies for Whippets) - https://www.barleykennels.co.uk/care/living-with-a-reactive-greyhound

If you think you can help a reactive Whippet please do get in touch by filling in an adoption application here - https://whippetrescue.org.uk/adoption-application/

Can we also take this time to ask people to please bear with us when getting in touch. We are working as fast as we can and must get back to people in order of priority to ensure the safety of the Whippets.

Thank you for your continued understanding and support.

Lisa and Katie x
