I have no words to express the stench that this mess produced.

This was in a local green space, some uncovered drain or something disgusting. Helga thought it was fantastic right up to the point we got home and instead of heading in she was faced with the hose and a bath!!!!

She’s still not happy now she’s dried off!

Not happy. Everyone keeps saying it’s ok, it’s only a baby and giving me extra cuddles and treats. But I don’t trust it, in fact I’m very suspicious and don’t even want to look at it. Human brother is very happy and seems to have it with him all the time. The only peace I get is out for walks or bedtime. It’s very annoying and I don’t think I will ever be friends with such a silly little thing like that. My big woof brother doesn’t seem to care, he sleeps a lot now and seems not himself. Mum says he’s not well which makes me sad. Can’t believe I’ll be left with this thing on my own one day!!!!!

Not posted in a while as life ticks by just nicely for a hound that’s been in their forever home for 3.5 years! But still life throws new experiences and even though we’ve been to agricultural shows and the like, we’ve never been to a horses only show!

Heggy was so good. We sat ring side with horses and ponies whizzing by and she took it all in her stride. Even made a few canine friends.

We also had our first garden party since we rescued Heggy. Her reactiveness and anxiety stopping us from inviting more than a few people round at a time. But this weekend gone the very special girl of the house turned 13 so we had to celebrate and invited 25 people for the afternoon. Helga did so so well, only reacting once when mg uncle leaned over her to hug me. Which I think was fair game as clearly he looked like he was going to to kill me!!!!

So well done Heggy you gorgeous gorgeous girl

Don’t let a segiguo off when spring is in the air!!!

Actually we were in what is deemed a secure, safe field. But it turns out it wasn’t, a deer appeared, the deer went through a hole in the stock fencing and Heggy followed.

We then had a two hour jaunt around the mendips trying to get her to listen and come back. She was so totally in hunt mode she didn’t care about anything else.

It was a happy ending but could have been so different. So back to long line until the holes in the fence have been properly fixed

Happy 3rd gotcha day Miss Helga. We love you ❤️⭐️❤️⭐️❤️

Most rescue dogs, whether rehomed from the UK or abroad come with the potential to be deemed unsafe around cats and small furries. Whether that urge to chase or even kill can be overcome is often not really known until the dog is put in the situation, not really the ideal test! So understandably most rehomed dogs are deemed not safe around cats.

When Helga came to us she had seen cats and seemed ok. We had two resident cats, one was just 8 months old whilst the other a very dog savvy 11 year old cat who had put a dog in its place many times. Still this didn’t stop Heggy ‘having a go’ when she first met them and a few times thereafter. But as the adopter, it is our job to try and reassure our dogs that these are friend not foe. Lucky for us Heggy soon understood our cats are part of our pack. I’m not entirely sure she feels the same about any of the neighbours cats mind!!!!

Fast forward to almost 3 years being with us and Helga had her biggest challenge yet.

We have a very small patch of land that we use for raising chooks, growing veg etc and we were very aware of the feral cats there. It wasn’t long before we noticed kittens being born every 6 months or so. Then last week we found an abandoned kitten, we left it for the mum incase she came back but she didn’t. So we brought him home.

At just two weeks old he was very vulnerable and totally dependent on us for regular feeds, warmth and toileting. Plus being protected from the two older cats and our two dogs. Little did we expect that Heggy would want to take on the role of mumma!!! Of course we are being very very cautious and not allowing any unsupervised contact between Heggy and the kitten. But wow, Helga loves that kitten, well Bear as we’ve called him.

So 10 days in and there are firm bonds being formed not just between us humans and Bear but Helga too.

Prepare for cuteness overload….

2 years ago we could barely go to places that were busy, let alone with lots of dogs. And we definitely couldn’t of had strangers coming up to say hello. But slowly, slowly there has been progress. On Saturday our 10 year old wanted to take the old dog to a dog show so we took Heggy too. She was so well behaved and calm I decided to take her into ’loveliest lady’ class ans she only went and won!!!

To top it off Pokka got second in ‘golden oldie’ class.

Thank you so much to Katie from Purple Dotty crafts for our beautiful memory rainbow for Ted. There’s such a huge hole without him here but this is a wonderful reminder of how much love he brought us.

We are so sad and heartbroken.

Our little Ted had to be PTS on Monday. He was diagnosed with a slow growing brain tumour about 3 years ago. His temperament was slowly getting trickier to manage but we did what we could and whilst we thought he had a quality of life we kept going. Sadly last week things took quite a drastic turn for the worse and Ted became quite ill. We had a lovely weekend with him then let him pass, peacefully Monday.

We are fortunate that a good friend had the perfect spot for Ted to be buried in his favourite woods.

We all miss him and his funny little ways. But he is now at peace.

Run free Ted. Love you forever.

Today was a day I don’t want to live through again.

Heggy has reasonable recall and there are certain places that we deem safe for her to be off lead. Places she is responsive and stays close. Sadly as from today off lead walks will never happen again.

Firstly Helga picked up a scent and ran a fair distance away from us (we have a tracker) and due to the wind she couldn’t hear us calling her. We then looped back round to try and get her and again, she couldn’t hear us so followed her tracks back the way she/we came. When she didn’t find us she decided to go home.

I’m shaking writing this as to get home she had to go a long way and cross a very busy, fast A road. All of this I am watching on the tracker whilst trying to run after her. As the tracker crossed the main road I held my breathe and was relieved when she picked up pace again the other side. Fortunately she got across safely, how I do not know and she made it home. My wonderful neighbour went round as soon as I rang her and found a petrified Heggy in the front garden.

It seemed to take me forever to walk/run the 1.6 miles home. I cannot express the relief of seeing my girl in one piece. I would never of forgiven myself if anything had happened to her.

So as much as I love her having a run and sniff around it’s long lead or secure field only now.

Hounds, they are beautiful souls but that prey and scent drive is so strong in Helga I just don’t think she will ever be 100% off the lead.

Thank you to whoever was watching over her today, probably my Dad, she certainly needed it and I am so grateful she’s still here in one piece.
