🎅🏼 Christmas is a time of joy and celebration, but it can also pose some unexpected dangers to our canine partners.
⚠️ According to the Blue Cross charity, some of the common Christmas hazards for dogs include toxic foods, seasonal plants, and decorations.
For instance, chocolate 🍫 , grapes 🍇 , onions 🧅 , and alcohol 🍷 are toxic to dogs and should be kept well out of their reach.
Pine needles from Christmas trees 🎄 can cause mild stomach upsets or blockages if ingested.
🪴Mistletoe, poinsettia, and holly are also toxic to dogs, so it’s best to avoid them when decorating.
❤️ However, with a bit of planning and following some simple tips, you can keep your dog safe and happy during the festive season.
✨ We recommend keeping your dog’s routine as normal as possible, providing a quiet and safe space for them to retreat to, and avoiding loud noises and flashing lights.

Here he is showing you all how we walk this way whilst out and about with his fabulous owner!
Long gone are the times when fireworks were only set off on one night, now it seems to be an entire season in which we hear fireworks, typically early October until well into January, this obviously massively increases the unpredictability of when they will go off.
Here are some of the things we practice to ensure our dogs are as safe and as comfortable as possible around firework season and particularly these next couple of weekends.
🎆 Make sure your dog is exercised/has their walk during daylight hours. Although this does not eliminate the risk of hearing fireworks (we’re hearing lots going off in broad daylight still!) it does minimise the risk.
🎆 Take your dog out for the toilet on lead, even the most laid back dog can be startled by an unexpected explosion and take flight. Running on that amount of fear can make clearing fences, gates etc a lot easier.
🎆 Always ensure they have a collar on with a tag with up to date contact/address details on and microchip details are up to date! Even the most bombproof of dogs can take flight unexpectedly and an up to date tag and microchip makes getting your dog back to you a quicker process.
🎆 We play audio on speakers around our house. We particularly recommend Brown noise, this is said to induce relaxation and lower frequency of loud noises. We also recommend Taiko drums as the frequency of these are said to dampen the booms of fireworks.
We also turn the TV/radio up slightly higher than usual (but please make sure your dog is happy with that.)
🎆 As dusk falls close all curtains and windows.
🎆 Ensure dogs are secure behind inner doors and the doors are closed tight before opening outer doors.
🎆 We create dens and hideaways using crates covered with blankets, so our dogs can “hide” if they want to. You can also drape blankets over the sides of your dining table to create a “cave”.
🎆 We ensure our dogs have access to long lasting chews - chewing can help a dog relax. The actions needed for Snuffle Mats and Kongs are also invaluable for helping to regulate a dogs heart rate and lower pulse and therefore lower anxiety.
🎆 Anxiety wraps and calming jackets eg. Thundershirts. Accustoming a dog to an anxiety wrap or calming jacket has been shown to relax a stressed dog.
🎆 Pet Remedy works alongside the brain’s natural ‘messengers’ called neurotransmitters, which work by telling the nerve receiving the message either to calm (via GABA pathway) or get ‘fired up’. In times of stress or anxiety the nerves get over stimulated, which leads on to the many different signs of stress we see in our pets. The special Pet Remedy blend of essential oils is valerian based and works alongside these natural relaxation pathways to help calm the nerves of anxious or stressed pets. ‼️🌟 Remember.. fear and anxiety are emotions and not behaviours. You can not reinforce an emotion. You can snuggle and comfort those pets as much as you wish, be their safe space, BUT only if they come to you for that comfort. Some pets prefer to hide away when experiencing fear and this is absolutely ok.
Animals can act completely out of character when experiencing fear, it is important we respect that and allow them to choose their own comforts, we just make sure they’re safe. 🌟‼️
