It takes very little effort to stick a pouch on, fill it with some tasty treats to train your dog.

But yes it does take patience and practice!!

Better than the alternative don’t ya think 🤔

If you are worried that using food for training is “bribery”

It’s probably not just the use of food that’s your issue!

Using DS and CC in training shouldn’t be described as

“slow and boring”

I don’t think that paints a very positive picture 🤷🏼

It should be promoted as

“Calming , with no time limits “

I think that Sounds more productive??

In my opinion 🙏🏼

It’s VERY easy to MAKE a dog do something or stop doing something and yeah can look impressive
But
ASKING the dog to do something, them trusting you and you understanding why is way more impressiverer !!!
(Real word🫣)

If you couldn’t express your fear of a situation because you were too fearful of the person stood with you….

How ya guna feel???

Think about this when deciding on what method you choose to train your dog!!

Times change.

Especially in dog training!

Methodology a good few years back became way more force free and now because of what I believe is due to demand/competition there seems to be more force free trainers promoting and using methods that are not force free!!

Don’t know about anyone else but I will NEVER change my morales just so I can earn a penny or 2!

Socialisation.

Would you continually take a child to a busy environment if that wasn’t suitable for their personality?

When would you discover this isn’t their happy place?

Normally when they are at a very young age.

*unless an unexpected negative event happens which creates the association .

Would you continue forcing them into the situation until they “get over it!”
Or……..

Find an alternative environment where they feel confident and comfortable and then possibly carefully, gently and gradually expose them to the scary environment in the aim of building their confidence?

Or alternatively where possible completely avoid the scary place if absolutely no benefit or reason to visit it in their future as has zero benefit/value??
All the above would be a learning experience for YOU as the carer/guardian and assists you going forward knowing what and where you can take the child and what to do.

This is absolutely no different to puppy socialisation………

Not MAKING your puppy cope with all experiences but understanding when, where and when you can go to places and who to meet.

If you teach dog training whether be puppies, general pet dog stuff, dog sport, dog activities and you do it in a kind, force free, ethical and fun manner then that makes you pretty damn cool!!

DO NOT WASTE YOUR RECALL!!!

Recall should be an event, like a great party or fun social that you really want to be at.

NOT a constant nagging knowing that if you wander on over that yeah you might get something you like but it’s not as fun as what you were doing previously so becomes a bit of a pain in the backside.

Remember…..
when TRAINING recall, DONT TEST IT
especially in those initial stages.

Teach it like you are creating a truly amazing event that your dog really really wants to attend!!

Small business??
It’s like juggling, everything is always
Up n down, money, clients, mental health….you name it it’s up n down.
You look around and think EVERYONE is doing better than you but they aren’t, they have the same issues but some hide them really well.
Yes there are ones that are very successful but it doesn’t mean less stressful.
BUT there are lots of advantages too…..
No boss, no clock in clock out, choosing your own hours (kinda 😝), the feeing of pride when it’s going well
“I did that, I made that happen, my clients think I’m great, I got paid for the thing I love!”
There are Good times and bad times as with anything but no business/work/job is worth damaging your physical or mental health…..NONE!!!!!!

So in short, If you like juggling run a business, if you are struggling with it then find someone who can give you juggling lessons and support.
But don’t leave it too late 🙏🏽

Does your adolescent dog run off and you struggle to get them to you and clip them back on a lead???

Course they/you do, it’s normal!!

Let’s look at WHY in a human analogy ish……😂

Imagine a puppy from 8 weeks when you get them up to up around about 16 weeks old they are a bit like a toddler, hangs out with you, very wary of leaving your side in the big wide world so will cling on to you for safety and wouldn’t ever dare to lose sight of you because if they did would then have a monumental meltdown 😳

Then……..

16 weeks (ish) to 2 and a half years old (ish) they are now way more like teenagers and very very quickly massively grow in confidence, become way more impulsive and less fearful.
Imagine in it human terms.
walking along the road as a teenager, by chance see their idol across a busy street, they would rush across without any safety considerations, no looking for traffic then get across and dive on the person to grab a cheeky selfie
All without consideration of consequences , they aren’t being rude either just impulsive!
Probably would walk off with them too if asked 😂

Then 2 and a half ish plus, adult hood, careful, considered, can’t be as botherdness!!
See their I dol across the street, check traffic, decide if can be bothered, are there too many people already there?, too noisy?, is it worth the effort?, probably not, walk on!!!!
A lot less impulsive……
Safety first 🫣😂

So yeah, your adolescent sees most things in life as their idol so are quite likely to sod off time to time 👋🏼

But it gets better around 2 years later don’t panic 😛

Have fun 😳

Focus more on getting better at what you are good at rather than constantly worrying about what you don’t know yet!

How to deal with clients who don’t want to use food in training……

Firstly, its their choice, we can only recommend and advise the benefits of its uses.

Secondly, without judgement ask why they don’t wish to use food.

Thirdly. Find an alternative reinforcer for them rather than force them into something they don’t wish to do which may create conflict.

Fourth , observe how the dog and person interact and see what you can learn from working without food.

Yes we commonly use food in training but we should be open minded about what other reinforcers are available to us.

Working in the pet dog training world for around 14 years and it’s never been more challenging to work out trends of busy v not busy.
There used to be very clear trends in when pups were coming. Not now!
The inconsistency is nuts.
One month there can be hundreds of pups and then suddenly next to zero…….
I’m lucky as we do have those absolutely manic periods which are great and we also offer other services that supplement the quieter pup times but yeah when it’s quiet now it’s pretty quiet.
I think we have found our new normal for what puppy training looks like.

Competition in the dog training world.

You were quite unlikely to have been the first.

If it’s a good idea it will be replicated.

If it’s not legally protected it can be copied.

The other persons version may not be as good as yours.

If you worry about this too much ^^^^ then your business will more likely struggle.

What YOU do is the most important thing to build YOUR brand and YOUR business.

Be the very best YOU can be!!

Being a dog trainer isn’t as simple as it used to be, starting up a business, getting clients, establishing reputation, finding your niche.
It’s an overloaded industry and there is absolutely no denying that.
This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be encouraging new trainers and supporting them it just means a new realistic expectation of the industry should be presented to them.
We know in pretty much 2 weeks starting from scratch you can become a dog trainer but then the hard work and learning actually begins.
Experience is invaluable, it takes time, sometimes will cost you financially even if that’s doing some stuff for little cost but as with anything the more hands on we get the more we learn.
This is a hands on business, being able to engage with people face to face, observing handler and dog, handling the dog to see what is and isn’t working. Developing your own handling skills.

Find what you love doing and fingers crossed it will be what you do for a very long time 😊
