Diabetes causes levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood to be persistently high. In most cases of canine diabetes, the pancreas stops producing insulin, meaning the body can’t regulate glucose levels. 🐶🐾

Adders are warming up... 🐍 🌞

As the weather heats up, it’s crucial for all dog owners to be mindful of adders, the UK’s only native poisonous snake. Adders emerge from hibernation in spring and pose a risk to dogs during the warmer summer months. These snakes generally only bite in self-defence, such as when accidentally stepped on or approached by a curious dog.

Adder bites can be serious, causing symptoms like lameness, vomiting, and changes in heartbeat, blood pressure, and breathing. They are commonly found in dry, sandy heaths, sand dunes, rocky hillsides, moorlands, and woodland edges.

If your dog is bitten, look for a dark-coloured swelling that can worsen rapidly. Immediate veterinary attention is crucial. Reach out to your nearest vet without delay, they will refer your pet to us if they need extra support...

Both indoor and outdoor rabbits require vaccinations to keep them safe from infectious disease. Young rabbits are particularly vulnerable to serious illnesses, so it’s important to get them vaccinated early. 🐰🐾
Rabbits can be vaccinated from five weeks old and will need yearly booster vaccinations throughout their life to maintain immunity.

🥰 Mowgli after a feline friend to call his own 🥰

One of the sweetest boys you'll meet, Mowgli has shown interest in other kitties and would love to be homed with another cat to spend his days hanging out with. 🐈

As Mowgli is a little noise sensitive (he can be easily spooked) he would be after a calm household, with older children (12 years+) that would be gentle around him. ❤️

If you think you could offer this friendly boy a forever home please click below:

Since you cannot check your rabbit’s teeth at home, it is important to look out for signs of dental disease.
There are many things that you can look out for that might indicate that your rabbit has some sort of dental health issue.
If you notice any of these signs, it is important that you bring your rabbit to your vet for an oral assessment as soon as possible.
Stopping eating altogether is an emergency.

Have you got a wildlife station set up in your garden?

Have you got a wildlife station set up in your garden?

It is hot, hot, hot outside and water sources are vitally important for wildlife! Dehydration can be fatal and we're admitting many dehydrated patients at the rescue centre. If you don't already have a water source for wildlife, you can easily create one out from items you may already have at home.

Pictured is a mini water station at the centre, created some summers ago using a disused tray and paving slabs to provide access. Your water station doesn't need to be fancy, and you might want to provide multiple stations of varying heights so all species can easily access them and reduce the competition.

To create your water station you will need:
- A tray i.e a takeaway/ tupperware tub, large saucer, washing up bowl, etc.
- A stone or brick to weigh it down.
- Extra stones, bricks or a paving slab to create an exit route should wildlife accidently fall in and make it accessible for smaller species.
- Fresh water to fill it!

Place it in a shaded, quiet location and enjoy watching wildlife visit your mini watering hole!

Neutering means removing the reproductive organs; this is either the ovaries in females (known as spaying) or the testicles in males (known as castration). Neutering is a routine procedure that does not require overnight hospitalisation, with an average recovery time of 5-10 days.

After a lot of thinking, I have decided to convert into a sanctuary for old and special needs piggies.
I will still be here for pamper days, nail clips, mite treatment etc I just won’t be taking in at the rate we do now and I will be focusing on those with special needs and those who need a retirement home.

This doesn’t mean the rescue is over forever, I may come back do it but for now at least I would like to take a breather and have some sanctuary piggies. I have decided that for at least six months I will remain sanctuary and then I will rethink about rescue.

A lot of you know I absolutely love hand rearing and there are many charities out there who need people who can hand rear so I’d love to share my time helping those which is practically impossible whilst running a full time rescue so turning into a sanctuary will give me the time I need to volunteer for other charities.

I am doing a veterinary care assistant course which I haven’t had the time to finish as the rescue has been so busy.

I think now is a really good time to step back a little, become a sanctuary and then help other charities who need a hand.

There are so many guinea pig rescues popping up so although I feel terrible turning people away, there are lots more options these days to when I first started up.

It will mean you get to see a lot more piggie posts and a lot less fundraising. We will take in special needs animals so there will still be the need for funds 😢 but it won’t be as much as there is now.

I really hope you don’t mind and still stick with me on the new adventure of a special needs sanctuary 😍

We do still have guinea pigs here who will be up for adoption when well enough. We have two pairs of boys who are undergoing treatment for ringworm so once better we will find them homes ❤️ we also have a pair of boys ready to go now so I’ll grab some pics of them soon.

When these have found homes, we will start our new adventure as a sanctuary 🥰

Edit. If you’re booked in for holidays don’t worry! You can still come x

Do your animals like ice cubes?

Is it safe to give your pets ice cubes? 🧊

Every year pet owners are warned that ice is dangerous, and that it might send them into shock! However, there is no evidence to support this claim.

Preventing your pet from overheating is really important, so here are some things you can do to keep them cool:

- Put ice in your dogs water bowl to keep the water cool
- Put crushed ice in their food bowl for them to lick

It's always important to remember NOT to give ice cubes to a pet that is suffering from heatstroke. They need water to drink and cool water poured over their body, you should also call your vet as soon as possible! ⚠️
