RAWHIDE:

With Christmas fast approaching we are moving towards the time of year when we typically start to see all the bright and colourful Rawhide appear in lots of pet shops.

What is Rawhide:

Rawhide is a by-product of the Leather industry and is not natural or edible. When the skin is turned into shoes or handbags it is the valuable outer layer which is used and it’s the inner waste layers that get made into chews, glue and soap (glue and soap are not food products). Then to make these more appealing to dogs some Rawhide contain beef, chicken, or liver flavourings.

Why Rawhide:

All dogs need to chew because chewing is instinctual for the dogs, it provides mental stimulation, it helps to reduce stress, and it helps to keep teeth clean.

Risks:

Rawhide is not a food product and therefore it is not possible for your dog to digest it and due to how that it is made it can contain toxic chemicals. Some dogs can be allergic to Rawhide or the substances used in it’s manufacture which can cause an upset tummy. More seriously Rawhide can also cause choking or blockages particularly if your dog manages to swallow large pieces which can then become lodged in the oesophagus and other parts of the digestive tract. A vet may be able to remove the pieces easily depending on where they are located however it could result in abdominal surgery if the pieces get lodged in the stomach or intestines.

How you can help to protect your dog:

Please don’t buy Rawhide and risk your dog’s health. It may be that you have given Rawhide in the past and this has not caused any issues with your dog, but the truth is it can and does happen. Is it worth the risk?

There are natural and safer long-lasting alternatives such as:

* Antlers.
* Yaka.
* Pizzle.
* Tendons.
* Cow's Ears.

Let’s end the Rawhide trade for good and provide our dogs with healthy alternatives.

Thank you for reading.

🧨 🎇 🧨 🎆 Fireworks 🎆 🧨 🎇🧨

I have been seeing lots of posts over the last few days about fireworks, and as Halloween and Bonfire night is just over 6 weeks away now is the time to start preparing your puppy/dog.

If you have a puppy, you can get them used to the sound of fireworks by playing sound clips which can be found on YouTube be: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AINzMizjDvw over the coming weeks gradually increase the volume each time. The important thing is to take this slowly and don't move on to a higher volume too quickly.

If you have a dog who has previously been worried about fireworks you can’t train them to be ok with them once they have been frightened, but you can take steps to make them more comfortable by pairing the scary thing with something your dog likes. Have some high value treats and follow the steps above with the YouTube clip. Each time there is a whizz, bang or pop reward your dog with a high value treat. Be super generous with the treats when the video is playing and then when the video stops so do the treats. This will help your dog associate the sound of the fireworks with the food.

You could also start giving your dog medication to help calm them, make them feel more relaxed and reduce anxiety; Dorwest Skullcap and Valerian is a natural remedy and can really help. This would need to be started around the beginning of October as they can take a few weeks to become effective, and Valerian compound can be given alongside this as a top-up if needed: https://rumidogbehaviour.co.uk/product/scullcap-valerian/

Although this is a natural product and can be given alongside other medications, I recommend speaking with your vet for advice if your dog is taking any other medication.

👉🏻 Ring o’ Fire!

If you have ever seen a dog sit and drag or 'scoot' its rear end across the ground, you may have thought it funny. However, it is no laughing matter for the dog and is a classic sign of a possible a**l gland problem. Our latest edition to our range of working herbs, 'Ring o' Fire! has been specifically mixed for dogs that scoot. Simply sprinkle this highly palatable mix over your dog's dinner - ideally drizzling a drop of water or Salmon Oil over dry kibble first. Most herbs generally take time to act within the system and every dog is different so please allow a few days before the dog should feel the benefit.

Recommended Daily Amounts (per 5ml scoop)
(This could be 'split' between 2 meals per day..)
Size of dog:
Small (0 - 10kgs) = 1/2 scoop
Medium (10 - 20kgs) = 1 scoop
Large (20 - 30kgs) = 1 - 2 scoops
Giant (30kgs+) = 2 - 3 scoops

'Ring o' Fire! comes in a 250g resealable foil pouch.

Ingredients: Echinacea, Liquorice Root, Fennel, Pumpkin Sees, Psyllium Seeds.

250g foil pouch - £15

The attached study was in dry fed dogs (they needed dogs with mucky teeth after all!). What it tells us is that raw bones are clearly safe for even dry fed dogs.

It seems only conventional, kibble promoting vets see problems with bones in dogs. Raw-feeding vets, for the very large part, do not. We repeat, over and over, that it's likely cooked bones they're seeing the problems with. Don't feed them. Vets that recommend (and educate their clients on) RAW bones are not seeing issues of note. That's many thousands of clients (millions really when you add in all the pages, Habib, Beckers etc, all exclaiming it's an exceedingly safe thing to do).

The fact it, raw bones are vital nutrition for dogs. If an example of a dog choking on a raw bone is eventually found (and you can be sure when it is it will be very heavily broadcasted...) it would mean no more or less than the story of a child choking on a vegetable - a dreadfully unfortunate happening. It will never be a reason to remove this entire food group from the population. It's simply too important. Not only do they clean teeth, pivotal to their health, but they contain all the things good dog joints need including things you've heard of including fresh bone-building amino acids and fat and bioavailable chelated nutrients such as calcium, zinc and selenium, but also the famous joint nutrients such as glucosamine, chondroitin and collagen. Then there's the study you hear less about, like the joint superheroes glucagon, gluthianone and hyaluronic acid. On and on. These were not invented by supplement manufacturers, they ARE joint material.

Outside of a few vitamins and conical flask minerals (which studies show are very poor substitutes to the real McCoy) kibble uses most of the above as optional extras, destined for the front of packets to lure you and your vet in. This is taking the modern veterinary approach of "WHEN your middle-aged dog gets stiff joints THEN give him new joint formula [which is the exact same as our other formula only now we include some dried cartilage and, finally, some vitamin C] which STUDIES SHOW can alleviate some of the symptoms of arthritis!!".

Too late, too late. Young pups need this stuff in fresh abundance from birth and all throughout life. In fact, Mum needs it throughout pregnancy. These are not optional extras. They are the building blocks, cement and insulation in a living, solid structure.

I just heard of a canine physio who will only recommend magic joint formula kibble for her client's joint recuperation as she doesn't know if there is glucosamine and chondroitin in raw dog food...with 10% joint and bone in it. That's where we're at. She will ignore the 60% obesity-inducing, joint busting carbs, lack of fresh fat and protein which the ruined joint needs now in abundance, the calcium carbonate instead of chelated calcium, the lack of collagen, glucagon, glutathione, all of those are not a factor to this physio - does it say "joint formula" and ideally "scientifically proven" on the packet? No, it doesn't have a packet. Well, then it can't be any good...

On every level, both dry and raw fed dogs need raw meaty bones in their diet (though just to be safe with dry fed dogs I would feed them a few hours after a kibble meal as kibble messes so badly with normal digestion).

☀️☀️☀️ Another hot day again today! ☀️☀️☀️

If your dogs, like mine have been struggling in the heat here are some things you can do to keep your dog cool:

✅ Frozen dog treats (Bone Broth, Kefir, Ice Cubes - safe as long as no signs of heat stroke).
✅ Cooling mats or wet towels.
✅ Paddling pool in the garden.
✅ Use fans indoors to create a breeze.
✅ Give them a long lasting chew to enjoy in the shade.
✅ Have a plentiful supply of fresh water.

Heat stroke:

🚨 Excessive panting and drooling When your dog pants, they are either hot or stressed.
🚨 Disorentation Unsteady on their feet In some serious cases your dog may collapse or have a seizure.
🚨 Vomiting and diarhoea Dehydration through these will make over heating rapidly worse.
🚨 Bright red or blue gums Gums turn blue due to lack of oxygen.
🚨 Collapse or seizure.

If you're worried your dog is displaying any of these signs then please see a vet immediately. Heat stroke can kill.

Yak Chew - Small

Yak Milk Chews are delicious and are fantastic for fulfilling your dog's natural desire to chew whilst helping with teething, anxiety or frustration.

The act of chewing has a calming and comforting effect on the adrenal-pituitary axis in the brain. It triggers the release of endorphins, which assists with calming and relaxation. As well as the behaviour benefits, chewing appropriate chews can help clean a dog’s teeth, remove plaque or aid a puppy through the difficult teething period. Adolescent dogs are also still teething and chewing often occurs at this time.

Himalayan Yak Snacks are a healthy, natural, long-lasting dog chew treat made from a very hard cheese and they don't smell. They are an excellent, unique natural dog chew for dogs of all sizes and ages. Suitable for puppies from 4 months.

💥 New Product – Leucillin! 💥

I have seen lots of posts over the last couple of weeks where dogs are suffering with skin allergies (my own dogs included), and I happened to come across this amazing product. Two of my dogs had itchy lumps appear on their tummies after playing in the long grass, which was making them scratch excessively, by using this product three times per day it cleared up within a day or so.

Leucillin Antiseptic Skincare is specially formulated for the equine and petcare market, it provides a high strength healthcare solution you can rely on; this 100% safe, non-toxic antiseptic, one-step topical pathogen control spray.

Leucillin contains the active ingredient Hypochlorous (HOCl); this is a naturally occurring chemical in the mammalian body produced by white bloodcells. Hypochlorous is one of the most effective and efficient biocides known to man.

Because Hypochlorous is a natural chemical already existing in the body, animals prone is skin sensitively with other products will not suffer any adverse reactions to Leucillin. Leucillin is skin pH neutral, non-toxic, and will not sting; it is 100% safe to use in any application including: cuts, minor open wounds, ears, eyes, and sensitive skin. Leucillin is completely harmless if ingested where domestic pets are likely to lick at treated areas.

For optimum strength of solution spray twice to clear nozzle, then apply liberally directly on to the area or saturate cotton wool and apply to more sensitive areas.

From a horse to a hamster, Leucillin is fast, safe and incredibly effective.
