What's Going On in This Video?

Jason is focusing on building straight lines with Finn, his three-year-old Labrador. He uses a stick as a focal point, with several dummies around it. He moves around the stick in a circle, sending Finn from different points and various distances.
Jason explains the importance of working on different terrains. Hills, for example, can pull a dog off course, so training on undulating ground helps the dog learn to stay on the line. Consistent training on various terrains builds the dogโs experience and confidence.

It's a windy day but Jason is practicing this advanced training drill with 3 year old Finn. Jason is assuming your dog knows basic commands like left, right, back, and the stop and hunt whistles. He is focusing on changing angles by using the corner of the field as the place to head to, in the first instance.
He sets up blinds at various angles, to teach Finn to adjust to different directions. The drill is to help Finn understand and maintain angles without relying on the usual 90-degree hedges or fences.

Adrian is introducing Rab to water for the first time. He explains that the dummy needs to be in shallow water to start with, getting deeper as the dogโs confidence grows.
It is not all plain sailing, so Adrian shows how he uses another experienced dog as a positive example, for Rab. This technique can help with reluctant swimmers.
To conclude Adrian talks about what to do if your dog is shaking and dropping the dummy when leaving water.

This drill is the building block for teaching blind retrieves to MaryLou. Learning Run-Pick-Return in a straight line.
Whilst the training exercise mimics a trial scenario where a judge might direct a handler to send their dog for a retrieve, it also applies to picking up in the shooting field and being directed to a bird by a keeper.
