Had a visit from the cutest puppy Flossie yesterday 😍 it's not very often you see a baby whippet!!

Flossie's big sister, Winnie, comes regularly for physio and hydro and has been doing so for years! She's a sporting dog and regularly competes in coursing and she's pretty good at it!

Hopefully baby Flossie is going to follow in Winnie's footsteps when she's old enough. Getting her used to handling and water now will definitely help her in the future as she will need regular sessions just like Winnie to make sure she stays in tip top shape 👌💪

She hasn't dipped her toes in yet but she will be doing some enough!

June was a busy one 💛

Otis came for some much needed physio and hydro after his luxating patella surgery. He had extremely tight muscles through his back legs and an awful posture - he was very hunched over and crouched through his back and hind legs.

With massage, laser therapy, stretching, hydro and a home exercise plan we managed to fix his posture 🎉

Like us, pain can hugely affect a dog’s behaviour.
When Artemis was struggling with back pain she was a grumpy little trog and who could blame her?! In fact that was what alerted me to the fact that she was potentially suffering.

The painkillers she was prescribed definitely took the edge off, but they didn’t and never would have cured the issue. And that’s where fantastic veterinary physios like the wonderful Sophie The Harrogate Vet Physio come in 😃
Sophie not only identified some of the underlying issues that THREE vets couldn’t (!) but she had the time in each session to gain Artemis’ trust so that she’d let Sophie treat her.

So, don’t just settle for pain meds for your pooch, get them seen by a physio as well, you won’t regret it. It’s covered by your insurance too!!

Unfortunately arthritis is a degenerative joint disease, in which the tissues in the joint break down over time. There is no cure for arthritis but it can be successfully managed and progression of the disease can be slowed!

A multimodal approach is needed for successful management of arthritis - this means changing just one thing is unlikely to make a difference. There needs to be lots of tweaking here and there and working out what works best for you and your dog.

This might involve:

✅Talking to your vet about pain medication (there's plenty out there!)
✅Booking a session with your local physiotherapist and trying hydro, laser, physio...
✅Correctly exercising your dog - little and often is normally better than walking their socks off!
✅ Controlling their weight - extra weight will put extra force through their sore joints, causing inflammation and more pain!
✅Getting the right nutrition and adding joint supplements to their diets
✅ Making some changes at home - like putting down non slip rugs, using ramps instead of stairs etc.

Arthritis doesn't have to be unbearable for your pet - correct management really is key!

⁉️ DID YOU KNOW: a dog's forelimb is actually a free floating limb supported by muscle? 😮

🦴 The red arrow in the picture below highlights the point where the scapula meets the humerus bone, forming the shoulder joint on the dog. When the strap of a harness crosses this point, it restricts extension of the limb and can lead to potential injury.

📽 The video in the link below helps explain the importance of proper harness fit on a dog's body to allow full movement of the thoracic limb.

Meet Goose 😍 and his determination to do anything for a piece of broccoli 🥦

With a potential hip operation in Goose's future, his (very smart) owners have thought ahead and decided to get him used to the hydro pool meaning this handsome boy has been coming along for some regular hydrotherapy sessions 😍

Not only will Goose be familiar with hydro if/when rehab comes around - but he will also be benefitting now as swimming will help build muscle mass on his back legs to help support those hips!

Some dogs benefit from hydro and physio so much that surgery is sometimes off the cards completely! Fingers crossed for Goose!

Meet gorgeous girl Daphne 😍

Daffy has been limping on and off since she was a puppy and X-rays couldn't find an obvious cause so after hearing all about hydro and physio from other Bernese mountain dog owners, her owner thought they'd give it a go!

Daffy has just had her third session and her confidence swimming has come on in leaps and bounds - she now jumps in all by herself ♥️

There has also been no limping since her first session!

Daffy is such a young dog so we don't want her on pain killers the rest of her life - alternative therapies are a great way of managing conditions.

🌟Meet Costa the cocker spaniel 🌟

Costa has been coming to The Harrogate Vet Physio for a few months now, he is on the road to recovery after major spinal surgery last year

He's coming on in leaps and bounds and we're so proud of him 🥳 he may be a little monster sometimes but we love him!

🌟 So.Many.Labradors. 🌟

Labradors are famous for their love of water so no wonder we see so many of them here!

Labradors are generally healthy dogs which live to 10-12 years on average but they are prone to joint diseases like hip and elbow dysplasia

Labradors are also famous for their love of food - making them prone to obesity 🌭

Hydrotherapy can be beneficial for any dogs with joint issues and is also a great way to get a few kgs off your dog!

🌟 Hedley pupdate 🌟

As you all know we've been raising a puppy for Guide dogs this past year 🦮🐕‍🦺

Unfortunately in January he was diagnosed with elbow dysplasia and due to it being caused by a fracture (which he may have been born with) he was withdrawn from Guide Dogs 😢

The good news is that he has now been adopted officially by me!

After having him for a year I thought I'd be super excited to be able to keep him but the reality is that I'm surprisingly disappointed - I'd have loved for him to qualify and change someone's life but for Hedley it just wasn't meant to be.

He'll be spending the rest of his life with me splashing around in the pool - hopefully avoiding surgery!

We, of course, plan to continue volunteering for Guide Dogs and will hopefully raise a puppy which will go on to change someone's life in the future 🥰

🌟 Meet Harley 🌟

Harley has a rare condition called APN - a neurological disorder that can lead to paralysis.

In January Harley suddenly lost the ability to walk and was admitted to .referrals2019 where he received the best possible care!

He has recently started his rehabilitation journey here at The Harrogate Vet Physio and he's getting better every week.

The first video shows Harley during his first hydrotherapy session (14th March) - he couldn't move/control his legs and we had to cycle his limbs for him.
Fast forward a month (13th April) and Harley took his first strokes in the pool by himself!

It's a long rehabilitation journey for Harley but he's getting there slowly and can now almost stand up by himself 🥰

We're so proud of you Harley, you've got this!

🐾 FUN AND FITNESS SESSIONS 🐾

A fun way to exercise your dog (especially whilst it's so cold and muddy out there)!

Just one minute of swimming equals 4 minutes of running 🐾

Lakes and rivers are far too cold at the moment for dogs to swim in and they are at risk of getting shock - a heated indoor swimming pool is a much better option!
