Let your dogs sniff! ππ»
I'm a firm believer in deliberately slowing down walks to allow sufficient sniffing time. When imagining the "superlative" example of a well-rounded dog, I think society quickly pictures a dog heeled with their owner as they walk at a steady pace. But, although managing the behaviour of our dogs is certainly necessary, we also need to remember to meet their natural needs. For most dogs, a walk without sniffing is almost pointless. It's imperative to note that stimulation comes in different forms - physical exercise is only a fraction of what is necessary for a dog's wellbeing. Dogs have an incredible sensory profile, designed for a purpose - letting them use that is extremely enriching and fulfilling. Allowing them the time to use their sense of smell is, in my humble opinion, the most crucial part of their walk. So, if that means slowing our pace, even stopping for a few minutes to let them do that - let's embrace it! Your dogs will appreciate it more than you imagine β₯οΈππΎπΆπ»ββοΈ
