CPD - Continued Professional Development

As a veterinarian, we must complete a minimum of 35 hours a year of additional education. We use this to increase our knowledge, understanding and experience in a subject area of our choice.

All our vets complete many more than the required hours and enjoy attending lectures, reading published literature and catching up with other vets on their cases and experiences.
Another step that we take to providing the best service we can to our patients.

Guess which vet this was doing extra reading 👀

Did you know how long our gastroscope is…?

Long enough to fit our entire practice team!

At over 3 meters long our scope needs to get from your horses nose right down to the end of their stomach. We pride ourselves on being a small, personal, independent veterinary practice (but still with over 20 years of clinical experience between us), allowing us to really get to know you and your horse.

Diastemata

Gaps between teeth can pack food which can lead to ulceration of the tongue or cheeks. Regular dentistry, especially for older horses, can spot if these problems occur.

The answer is….

Blind wolf teeth.

These were referred on by a great local EDT who spotted two lumps rostral to the 06s. We can use radiographs to help us confirm or differentiate between fractured wolf tooth roots if required, but for this case it wasn’t necessary.

Any guesses to what these are? 🦷

🐎 MEET THE TEAM 🐎

We would like to introduce the newest member of our team, Rachael.
Some of you may have had the pleasure of speaking to Rachael already to book in appointments. In her interview Rachael blew us away with her calm composure (very much needed when in the middle of dealing with multiple emergencies, operations and poorly ponies), organisation and friendly manner. Having horses herself, she knows how precious our four-legged friends are!

A big thank you to all our amazing clients this week who have
🚘 Text us to tell us not too worry if we are late, they just want us in one piece.
☕️ Kept us warm with hot drinks and snacks.
💦 Provided hot water for dentals, cleaning wounds and washing our hands.
❤️ Been truly and utterly kind and caring towards us as vets.

These little gestures are truly appreciated.

Being an independent practice, we are so lucky that our clients (each and everyone of you) mean so much to us and we hope in return we can provide an individual caring service to you. As the week draws to a close we are in high spirits and are so lucky to do the job we love.

☎️ We hope you do not need us but ring the normal number over the weekend and you will be directed to Millie who’s on call.

As an ambulatory practice we try and do as much as we can to keep your horses in the comfort of their own stables. Our portable gastroscope allows horses to be starved at home, hopefully minimising any stress. You also don’t have to worry about transport! Of course we still have our fabulous clinic facilities available should you wish to use them 🐴

One of our amazing referring EDT’s Rachel Hanlon and we had to share. Millie, Hollie and Meisha would love warm water when performing dentals. If we can feel our fingers then we can feel your horses teeth and we use our hands a lot in the dental examination 🦷🤩

Why should you check your horses teeth regularly if they are getting older?
As owners it’s very difficult to check the back of the mouth, but a lot of denition deterioration can happen with age. That’s why in older patients we may recommend seeing them twice a year rather than once a year.
If horses develop incisor diastemata (gaps between their teeth), it can be helpful for owners to check for any hard bits of hay or twigs stuck between them that may cause soft tissue damage and ulceration.

Winnie and Spud have worked together for a number of years and were delighted to be reunited this morning after 5 weeks apart. They had a good catch up in front of the AGA!

And yes, this means Millie is back!

With more cold weather on the horizon be sure to keep safe and warm! Check your horses are a comfortable temperature and regularly break ice off water buckets. It may be worth adding additional water to feeds to ensure your horses stay well hydrated throughout this time.

INFUNDIBULA CARIES RESTORATION
Horses have structures in their teeth called Infundibula. Over time if these become packed with food then it can lead to fracture.
We are able to perform restorations ‘fillings’ in these teeth to prevent fractures from occurring.

TOOTH EXTRACTION
This horse was referred in by a local EDT who had spotted a sagittal fracture straight through a mandibular tooth. If left, it could lead to further pain and abscesses. We got him straight in and performed an extraction.
The horse had showed no pain signs such as quidding or inappetence, which reinforces the importance of a thorough oral examination when your dental technician or vet visits.
