Check out these signs of pain in your dog. Consult your vet if you are concerned. Massage can help relieve pain and ease the muscle stiffness associated with arthritis. It can also improve circulation, helping to reduce inflammation, improve movement and ease pain. Always check with your vet first.

6. Is canine arthritis painful?

YES – arthritis causes chronic pain, and if not controlled, this pain will increase over time. 😢
Dogs are masters at hiding early signs of chronic pain, but changes to how they look, how they move, and how they behave are all things to look out for.
Understanding how your dog expresses pain is key to managing this disease proactively, and to letting you know if your interventions are helping.
If you suspect your dog may be experiencing pain, please consult your veterinarian for advice.

How I got started: My dog made me do it! I became interested in canine massage to help my own dog. She had a rough start to life after being neglected as a puppy. I started researching canine massage to help with her anxiety and soon became interested in all the other benefits it could bring. Having experienced benefits from massage myself, both sports and relaxation, it suddenly clicked with me that if it works for humans, it should work for dogs too.
I began training with Rose Holistic Therapies and Training in January 2020 and achieved the Level 4 Diploma in Canine Merishia Massage in February 2021. The course covered practical and theory elements of anatomy and physiology, performance and health, handling, gait and joint assessment, Swedish massage, holistic and deep tissue techniques, cranial work, joint mobilisations; and included completing case studies with massage therapies on a variety of dogs. I am a practitioner member of the Association of Merishia Therapists and am committed to continually learning to ensure I provide the best service to help all our furry best friends.

Here is the final instalment of tips from RVN Robyn Lowe in honour of :

7. Start thinking about arthritis before it starts!

There are lots of things we can do to try and reduce the risk of a dog developing arthritis. We might not be able to totally prevent it, but if we can delay it's onset by a few years this is definitely a win!

🐾 Household safety and environment is very important for young dogs - we want to aim to prevent injuries that could prelude arthritic changes. A study showed that puppies raised on slippery flooring are 1.6 times more likely to get hip dysplasia and another shows young dogs using stairs early in life can also be at increased risk in hip dysplasia, a condition that later leads to arthritis.
🐾 Keep your dog in a lean, healthy body condition throughout their life so they are not putting excessive pressures through their joints.
🐾 Avoid repetitive and high impact activities like ball chasing that can lead to twisting forces and micro-traumas in the joints. This over time can lead to arthritis.
🐾 Activities like jumping from the back of a car, following you up and down stairs, leaping on and off the sofa... these might seem fine in a young dog but can cause injury. They can also be hard habits to break once your dog is older and these things really need to be avoided to protect arthritic joints. Training to avoid these activities early in life is important to make your life easier as your dog ages!

Long post alert for Dog Anxiety Awareness Week.
Canine anxiety is the same as human anxiety. Humans have evolved to process and deal with emotions differently, but the systems are the same. For example, while humans don’t usually shout at or bite a dentist that is trying to help, the fear and anxiety felt is the same.
Fear and anxiety are related, and both are necessary for survival to avoid and escape from dangers. In a fearful situation the body becomes flooded with stress hormones, giving the surge or energy required to deal with the situation face on, or to escape—fight or flight.
Anxiety is the anticipation of a fearful situation and mimics fear with the release of stress hormones. However, the situation may not actually occur and therefore the hormones are not required for fight or flight. Instead, they remain in circulation which can cause issues.
In humans, massage is often used to relax the body and mind. Massage therapy can work to manage the fight or flight response that is typically overactive in people with anxiety disorders and causes fearful thoughts and uncomfortable physical reactions such as shortness of breath, accelerated heart rate and sweating. Massage has the opposing effect on the fight or flight reaction by evoking the relaxation response, lowering heart rate and making the person feel calmer. The easing of tension in the body or relieving of breath can also encourage the body’s memory of both physical and emotional trauma to be released, helping to bring the mind and body back into balance.
Studies have shown that the anxiety reducing effects of massage can last long after the massage sessions have finished.
As the physiology between humans and canines is the same, the benefits of massage to help with anxiety should be experienced by dogs too.
Any treatment should be what’s right for the dog. A holistic approach should be taken with the advice and involvement of other professionals sought, for example, the dog’s vet, a dog behaviourist, or a dog nutritionist.
Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy the rest of your day.
