Long post alert for Dog Anxiety Awareness Week.
Canine anxiety is the same as human anxiety. Humans have evolved to process and deal with emotions differently, but the systems are the same. For example, while humans don’t usually shout at or bite a dentist that is trying to help, the fear and anxiety felt is the same.
Fear and anxiety are related, and both are necessary for survival to avoid and escape from dangers. In a fearful situation the body becomes flooded with stress hormones, giving the surge or energy required to deal with the situation face on, or to escape—fight or flight.
Anxiety is the anticipation of a fearful situation and mimics fear with the release of stress hormones. However, the situation may not actually occur and therefore the hormones are not required for fight or flight. Instead, they remain in circulation which can cause issues.
In humans, massage is often used to relax the body and mind. Massage therapy can work to manage the fight or flight response that is typically overactive in people with anxiety disorders and causes fearful thoughts and uncomfortable physical reactions such as shortness of breath, accelerated heart rate and sweating. Massage has the opposing effect on the fight or flight reaction by evoking the relaxation response, lowering heart rate and making the person feel calmer. The easing of tension in the body or relieving of breath can also encourage the body’s memory of both physical and emotional trauma to be released, helping to bring the mind and body back into balance.
Studies have shown that the anxiety reducing effects of massage can last long after the massage sessions have finished.
As the physiology between humans and canines is the same, the benefits of massage to help with anxiety should be experienced by dogs too.
Any treatment should be what’s right for the dog. A holistic approach should be taken with the advice and involvement of other professionals sought, for example, the dog’s vet, a dog behaviourist, or a dog nutritionist.
Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy the rest of your day.
