I've just come across Rossway Park Escape in Berkhamsted

Looks amazing, if you need private hire there is an option for this or a public area for dog friendly dogs.

So much enrichment provided

A fully enclosed 2+ acre private forest getaway. With its own doggy pond, a sandpit, enrichments & rest area - it's ideal for both 50min exercise sessions or for pup socials with friends, or longer stays using it as a base to explore all the doggy activities & pup friendly pubs in the area.

FIREWORKS ADVICE!

If you have a rescue dog, or a dog who has experienced a recent trauma, they may be particularly sensitive to fireworks (the same is true for small animals and birds).

So here's a few tips to help you prepare for the fireworks and to help keep your pets safe and calm:

1. WALK YOUR DOG EARLY

Try to take your dog for a walk before 3pm, or as early as possible; be mindful that some people may even let fireworks off before it gets dark!

Remember: if your dog has already experienced fireworks in a particular area, going back to that same area may bring back the anxiety.

2. KEEP PETS INSIDE DURING FIREWORK DISPLAYS

Make sure your dog is taken out to toilet earlier. Where possible, bring cats and small animals inside. Rabbits, guinea pigs and birds in aviaries are particularly vulnerable.

3. OCCUPY THEM WITH ENRICHMENT OR PLAYTIME

Provide your pet with an alternative outlet, to keep anxiety at bay. A nice filled Kong, a puzzle game or a simple game of 'find it'.

4. HELP SOOTHE YOUR PET WITH MUSIC

Music can help to block out some of the noise and certain types have been proven to have a calming effect. You can also turn up the volume on the TV, to make the *bangs* seem less dramatic in comparison to the volume inside the house..

5. REASSURE THEM

Do not punish your dog for showing fearful behaviour. If they are frightened - it is okay to comfort them.

You can reassure your dog. Contrary to what you may hear, it is not possible to reinforce an emotion (e.g. fear). Please do not punish your dog if it is fearful or anxious.

We advise, where possible, staying inside - partcularly on nights of firework displays - to keep your pets safe and to give them company and support.
......................................

We always advise pet owners to seek further advice from a behaviourist or trainer working closely with a vet.

They will work with you on a behavioural modification programme and, in certain cases, vets can recommend drugs/therapy/holistic remedies to help keep your dog calm and relaxed.

Preparation is the key - so please keep this advice handy, especially over the festive period and new year's eve.

Caught up with a previous client today when I popped into his shop.

Dakota has grown a lot since our sessions but she so well mannered. All down to her owner putting all the hard work in when she was a puppy.

Something I often hear is to give dogs rice and chicken when ill. But is rice OK to give your dog rice?

Check out Dogs Naturally Magazine's post about why rice isn't the best choice.

Chicken and Sweet Potato is a great alternative

https://www.facebook.com/100064749486468/posts/684338423734468/?sfnsn=scwspmo

⚠️ If your dog isn't feeling well and has loose stools, rice is the LAST thing you want to give him. It's true he needs fiber to absorb excess fluids and nutrients to replace the ones he’s lost ... but rice has neither!

Here's why you should avoid rice for your dog ...

🍚 Arsenic Is Common In Rice
Health effects from arsenic include cancer, vascular disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, neurotoxicity and reduced brain function. Arsenic is in pesticides and herbicides, wood preservatives, phosphate fertilizers, industrial waste … so it drains into the groundwater that feeds wells and irrigation systems. And rice appears to absorb more arsenic from water than other crops.

🍚 Rice Can Lead To Diabetes
A diet high in carbohydrates like rice increases the insulin demand in your dog, and that stresses the pancreas and can lead to diabetes … and today 1 in 300 dogs will get diabetes.

🍚 Rice Is Nutrient Poor
Rice is devoid of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. It’s a carbohydrate and dogs don’t need carbs. They survived for thousands of years on other animals, fats and plant materials like berries and grasses.

🍚 More Rice Means Less Meat
When there’s rice in dog food, that means there’s less meat in the formulation and dogs need MEAT to make essential amino acids like taurine. And rice often outweighs other ingredients and can lead to weight gain and diabetes.

🍚 Rice Isn’t Natural Food For Dogs
Like wheat, corn and barley, rice isn’t found in an edible state so it needs to be processed. Wild dogs don't forage in rice or wheat fields ... they're looking for the henhouse.

So really, rice isn’t nice … for your dog.
