Elsa comes to Peak Paws to make friends! This is her little hippo friend Ember. These two absolutely adore each others company! ❤️ Elsa has a magical way at giving confidence to other dogs in the pack and she's particularly good around nervous and reactive dogs. She certainly has a very soothing presence and every dog we've introduced her to, not only has she made a friend in them, but she give the other dogs so much back! She's able to read if a dog needs space, alone time, play time, or to be close. Elsas a highly intuitive dog and we love her! ❤️

Cuddles on the sofa with Belle during her housesitting. This Hungarian Vizsla is still recovering post surgery and she's making great progress!

We've been using this opportunity to introduce some fun training games whilst she can't be active as usual! Belle can be reactive in certain situations and her arousal levels can shoot through the roof leading to barking, lunging, pulling and filling up her stress bucket.

We've been using her food and treat allowance to play with puzzles, leaving search and sniff games in the garden and around the house, which she loves being a gundog!

She loves to chase squirrels in her garden which could hinder her injury progress if she had a huge burst of power to chase them. We've been using her food allowance and the 'ditch the bowl' technique to teach her disengagement, calm and focus! Her pet sitter has certainly become sexier than a squirrel this week and her owners are amazed watching videos of their dog succeed at being calm around their resident squirrels!

Belle is also being muzzle trained which has been going incredibly well. Belle is already used to putting her head into novelty items like frozen kongs, pots, tubs and snuffle mats, which has helped massively when introducing her to the basket of a muzzle. Taking things slowly we have been spreading food pastes into a muzzle and encouraging her to 'touch' her nose inside the muzzle, slowly increasing her 'touch' time and letting her lick pastes or take treats from the muzzle. We are now at a stage where we can clip the muzzle on for a short time and clip it back off with lots of praise. She is growing a really positive association with the muzzle!

Well done lioness Belle!

We've been using toys with Alex recently. They have been a great tool to redirect his attention onto his handler if he feels nervous, distracted or feels like he is tensing up. We've taught him how to focus calmly on the small tug enuff toys which is always in our pockets and pulled out if needed for ease.

Alex has been learning 'toy switch' game which is so much fun! This fun game enables Alex to either run to a static toy and when you shout switch, he leaves the toy he was aiming for and orientates back to you and 'switchs' toy to the one you are holding!

Or one toy can be thrown, and as the dog orientates back to you with that toy, you can encourage them to 'release' the toy they have, and 'switch' to play with the other toy! It's usually best played with 2 of the same toy and colour, otherwise the dog can make a preference on a toy, and not learn how to 'switch' toys smoothly.

Now Alex knows the game, he can play with a range of different toys and enjoys switching them when asked.

This game is great for focus, recall, proximity and disengagement!

Have a go!

If you search for 'absolute dogs toy switch' and a video should emerge on how to play.

Enjoy!

I bet a few of you know this superstar? George AKA Big G! We've had a nice weekend house sitting for him. He's really enjoyed his leisurely strolls, a la carte dinners, doing his patrol of the garden and then his evening nap on his throne.

Annie and Phoebe enjoyed their adventure with us today! They seemed to be in deep discussion for a while over what to do with a small hole they had just dug!? Beautiful dogs, both adolescents and well suited for each other on their group walk! ❤️

A lot of dog owners we know use the fabulous Nina Ottoson toys, which helps excersise your dogs mind and body. The puzzles and games can also help with boredom, behaviour problems, weight issues and strengthens the bond you have with you dog! Belle has been playing this level 4 Nina Ottoson puzzle for 40 mins which is stuffed with half of her daily treats and kibble!

It's always lovely to see this lioness! We've been asked to care for her special needs post surgery. Even though we are not out and about as part of our dog sitting visit, there's so much we can do together to engage her mind, whilst keeping the calm and ensuring she keeps the weight off her foot. We have licky mats, slow feeders, chews, new toys and of course lots of cuddles and love! We take things slowly but that doesn't mean a dog healing from surgery or that is unwell can't recieve all they need to stay happy!

If you have a dog which needs post op care, medications, and sensitivity towards their rehabilitation schedule whilst you are away, get in touch with Peak Paws! We will listen to you and ensure your dog receives everything they need ♥️

Look at the stars, look how they shine for you. ✨

Today is for George and all dogs who have big feelings like anxiety or reactivity.

You see today is day - a special day where we get the chance to shine a spotlight on dogs who wear yellow.

A day where they can be celebrated from a distance, just the way they like it. 💛

I’m proud of George and I don’t need a specific day to shout about his valid feelings - but if highlighting what today is and if it educates even just one person about why a dog may be wearing yellow, then it’s absolutely worth it!

So, if you can, share this post - share any 🌻

Meet Phoebe, our new Golden Retriever who's joined the Peak Paws pack. She's come to us for interesting adventure walks and dog training. We are currently working on engagement, disengagement, proximity value (a dogs value in being close to you), calmness and focus. To work towards this we have been playing games to grow these concepts in Pheobes mind such as:

🐕‍🦺 2 paws up
🐕‍🦺 Nose touch
🐕‍🦺 Orientation games (weather games)

She loves these games and after 2 sessions with us, she is already walking past piles of horse p**p which she can love to roll in, recalling from those squirrels, and enjoying being close to her handler! It takes time and practice, but what a dog rehearses, a dog gets good at!

Well done Pheobe 👏
