Heat Safety for Dogs

Just thought I’d throw this out here again, even though it’s doing the rounds on social media… because I’m still seeing dogs being walked in the heat, even at peak times.

Two dogs from Bakewell have died this week due to heat stroke.

That’s not a scare tactic—it’s reality.

Please be sensible. Walk your dogs early. I was out the door by 645 am this morning and home by 8.30. Ours will be inside for the rest of the day, with just a few short toilet breaks.

If you’re worried about boredom, there are plenty of ways to provide enrichment indoors.

I’ll be doing a bit of training, brain games and some food puzzles to help keep minds calm and engaged. I might even share what I do 😉

Don’t risk it. They’d always rather skip a walk than collapse from heat exhaustion.

Please share this post or story it if you can—let’s see if we can educate the masses a little more. The more people who see it, the more dogs we might save.

Elsa comes to Peak Paws to make friends! This is her little hippo friend Ember. These two absolutely adore each others company! ❤️ Elsa has a magical way at giving confidence to other dogs in the pack and she's particularly good around nervous and reactive dogs. She certainly has a very soothing presence and every dog we've introduced her to, not only has she made a friend in them, but she give the other dogs so much back! She's able to read if a dog needs space, alone time, play time, or to be close. Elsas a highly intuitive dog and we love her! ❤️

Cuddles on the sofa with Belle during her housesitting. This Hungarian Vizsla is still recovering post surgery and she's making great progress!

We've been using this opportunity to introduce some fun training games whilst she can't be active as usual! Belle can be reactive in certain situations and her arousal levels can shoot through the roof leading to barking, lunging, pulling and filling up her stress bucket.

We've been using her food and treat allowance to play with puzzles, leaving search and sniff games in the garden and around the house, which she loves being a gundog!

She loves to chase squirrels in her garden which could hinder her injury progress if she had a huge burst of power to chase them. We've been using her food allowance and the 'ditch the bowl' technique to teach her disengagement, calm and focus! Her pet sitter has certainly become sexier than a squirrel this week and her owners are amazed watching videos of their dog succeed at being calm around their resident squirrels!

Belle is also being muzzle trained which has been going incredibly well. Belle is already used to putting her head into novelty items like frozen kongs, pots, tubs and snuffle mats, which has helped massively when introducing her to the basket of a muzzle. Taking things slowly we have been spreading food pastes into a muzzle and encouraging her to 'touch' her nose inside the muzzle, slowly increasing her 'touch' time and letting her lick pastes or take treats from the muzzle. We are now at a stage where we can clip the muzzle on for a short time and clip it back off with lots of praise. She is growing a really positive association with the muzzle!

Well done lioness Belle!

We've been using toys with Alex recently. They have been a great tool to redirect his attention onto his handler if he feels nervous, distracted or feels like he is tensing up. We've taught him how to focus calmly on the small tug enuff toys which is always in our pockets and pulled out if needed for ease.

Alex has been learning 'toy switch' game which is so much fun! This fun game enables Alex to either run to a static toy and when you shout switch, he leaves the toy he was aiming for and orientates back to you and 'switchs' toy to the one you are holding!

Or one toy can be thrown, and as the dog orientates back to you with that toy, you can encourage them to 'release' the toy they have, and 'switch' to play with the other toy! It's usually best played with 2 of the same toy and colour, otherwise the dog can make a preference on a toy, and not learn how to 'switch' toys smoothly.

Now Alex knows the game, he can play with a range of different toys and enjoys switching them when asked.

This game is great for focus, recall, proximity and disengagement!

Have a go!

If you search for 'absolute dogs toy switch' and a video should emerge on how to play.

Enjoy!

I bet a few of you know this superstar? George AKA Big G! We've had a nice weekend house sitting for him. He's really enjoyed his leisurely strolls, a la carte dinners, doing his patrol of the garden and then his evening nap on his throne.
