The decision to adopt a dog should never be taken lightly... there are many factors to consider, on a practical level and emotional level. Even more so when there are kids in the family. 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒

One of the biggest ones is...

Do you have the time to have a dog? 🕰️

The kids need you to take them to after-school activities, or social gatherings, but also you have laundry to do, packed lunches to prepare, organise dinners, which also means extra planning and shopping trips. Your brain needs to retain a certain number of information, such as where to go, when and how to get there. There are doctor's appointments, some unexpected sickness, some school events, book day outfits, food tech shopping... I mean, you name it, there is always something when kids are involved. 👧 🧒

A dog would add to all that... meals, toilet breaks, walks, enrichment times (like playing, training, and other activities to make sure their day isn't boring and their life has a sense of fulfilment), vet appointments (regular or last minute, which sadly happens), get their food from the pet shop or butcher (that's another trip somewhere, or if delivered, it's putting it away, remembering to order it again, order it elsewhere if the dog didn't like it, or didn't get on with it.

They also need your attention on washing their beds, cleaning their bowls, taking them to the groomer, groom them yourself (even just between sessions with the professional groomer).

When you have dogs the cleaning around the house is more... whether they shed fur or not. 🐕

And when the kids are home, you need to make sure you have the time to actively supervise kids and dogs when they are together.

All of this, while still working, taking care of yourself, have time for your (human) family and friends, and any unpredictable things life gifts you with. 💝

Dogs are incredibly rewarding and, I swear, my life would not be complete without dogs in it... but even I sometimes feel like my life is consumed by everything else but my own needs. And I feel super tired and like I can't do it, you know?

I also know a lot of family giving up the family dog because they didn't realise how much more time having a dog was going to cost them.

In some other cases, the dog becomes someone who is 'just there', left home for hours on end, rarely walked, rarely amused, living a bit of a sad life.

So, before adopting a dog, sit down with the whole family and have a proper discussion, with all the pros and cons of adopting a dog. If you are not sure what to list or how to think about it, any KAD approved professional would be able to help you with that, as an impartial third party, but with an educated understanding of the meaning of giving a dog a good and healthy family life. ❤️

Today my lovely hubby is *cough* years old!

To celebrate him... here's a little extract from my book 'It Started With A Sit':

“At the time we also started a puppy class in a nearby town.
The trainer took pride in having years of experience working with dogs, while Gary and I were first-time dog caregivers, so we went to the classes, hoping to learn about our dog and how to raise Pixel properly and with loving care.

However, very little of what that man told us resonated with Gary or me.

We were given outdated advice that neither of us was going to follow, such as:
If Pixel went toilet in the house, the guy told us to put Pixel’s face on the wee, so he would know not to do it; or to tap him on the nose with a newspaper.

The man also told us that our puppy wasn’t fully listening to us because he did not see us as his ‘superiors’ (alpha) and we had to assert our place in our puppy’s life. So, he taught us to get our puppy to roll his belly and hold him down.

That position is called the Alpha Roll. When we got home, I went online to search for that term and other people seemed to believe in it, so I admit, I tried it.

And I hated it!

Pixel’s belly was round, cute, and warm. I wanted to just tickle it, but instead, I was holding it down because I thought that was what I was supposed to do.

In his extreme stress, my little boy was struggling and tried to bite my hand, which he couldn’t reach.

Gary walked into the room and saw us in that position.

He saw how worried and upset I looked and how distressed Pixel was.

‘This can’t be right.’ he said.

‘It doesn’t feel right, but that’s what the guy told us to do. I am not sure at all, though.’ I replied.

‘I think we should look into it a bit more.’ Gary suggested.

I happily released my puppy from that awful position and profusely apologized to him for keeping him pinned to the floor.

‘It won’t happen again.’ I promised him.”

I hope you can all have someone that, like Gary did for Pixel and for me, question what is considered authority, if things don't feel right... and that advocate for those who cannot 🐕‍🦺👧

This week many, if not all kids in England are going back to school.🏫

Many parents will be celebrating that day... tears of joy as they see their kids in their school uniform off to new adventures, and jumps of freedom as they skip their way to some grown up time! 💃

But there is also a very big portion of us whose kids are struggling to leave their parents, their house, their comfort zone, because school is big, strict, scary... all their sensory processing are firing up; their social skills put to the test in overwhelming ways and the school life in general triggers too much discomfort to endure.😓

Some kids won't be able to handle going into school at all.

Some kids will manage for a bit, but not all day.

Some kids will mask their feelings for as long as possible, until they reach their limits and will need days to decompress before they can try again.

There is nothing wrong with those kids, simply schools aren't equipped to support all children, showing us that the system is broken and old fashioned. 😢

I am with you, parents of kids who struggle.

I am one of you.

All I can say is that our dogs and cat will be there to support our daughter.🐶🐱

Winnie, in particular, will be her usual empathic self and help Molly in anyway she can. ❤️

Even some strokes of Winnie's soft fur or a gentle walk with her (and me) can help Molly to find her balance again, or at least to calm down a bit (unless we have reached a very difficult emotional point, which we try not to get to, but sometimes it's hard).🐾

I have been told by the school before that I indulge my child and love her too much.

As a behaviourist some clients told me before that they think they indulge their dogs too much and love them too much, thinking they are therefore feeding the issues, rather than not.

Well, I can honestly say, you cannot reinforce fear with love.
Love feeds love! So, keep hugging your kids and dogs (if they want to), keep being there for them... advocate for them and be proud of it! 🥰

And stay strong, I know it's hard and heartbreaking, but you've got to keep going. Use that love you have for your kids to give you strength ❤️
