Your dog doesn’t need to walk like a robot to be “well-trained.”
Dogs experience the world through their nose. Sniffing isn’t “messing about” — it’s mental exercise, stress relief, and pure joy.
If a dog is constantly prevented from using their nose, it’s like taking a child to the playground and saying, “You can come, but no playing.”
Studies show sniffing increases dopamine (the “feel-good” chemical) and promotes relaxation.
Chronic restriction can lead to frustration, which might show up later as anxiety, reactivity, or overexcitement off-lead.
A good walk is about mental and physical balance
A robotic heel might win points in a training competition, but in everyday life, most dogs benefit from a walk that’s a blend of structure and freedom. When we let them use their nose, we’re not “losing control” — we’re giving them the enrichment they naturally need.
The best walk isn’t the most perfect-looking one — it’s the one your dog actually loves.
