The Pet Path Instagram and Facebook have been quiet for a few days while we've been working on something special...

We understand that sometimes there’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to animal husbandry. Everyone has a slightly different approach depending on their personal views and their cats’ needs as individuals. This simple handbook has been developed in collaboration with our Expert Panel to show where the latest scientific thinking can be applied to the real-life rollercoaster of raising cats and kittens in your home, and is completely free with every in-person visit from our team.

At Pet Path, we are here for breeders as much as the animals, and recognise the need for an inclusive community that appreciates those supporting one another. Let’s celebrate the diversity of experience, ideas, and skills we have - always led by up-to-date feline research.

Which cover do you like best? Vote in our Stories!

[Description: An example of the new Breeder Handbook is sitting on a dark wooden table with some pages open showing the Socialisation & Habituation section. A delicious milky coffee is also in shot to sustain the Pet Path team while they work!]

And last, but by no means least, we’re proud to welcome and introduce Dr Susan Moreland, the fourth member of our Expert Panel.

Sue brings over 20 years of knowledge and experience breeding Bengal cats alongside her 46 year strong career in veterinary clinical practice. Advising a national governing cat fancy as part of their Genetics Committee, and officiating at many cat shows as the duty Veterinary Surgeon, there’s nothing Sue doesn’t know about ethical breeding practices. Sue brings the voice of responsible breeders to all our decision making, ensuring they are at the heart of what we do.

“I am delighted to support an initiative to promote the breeding and sale of kittens that have been reared to the highest health and welfare standards. I have grave concerns about current advertising rules which allow the sale online of unregistered kittens as “pedigree” when they clearly are not. The sale of such kittens is associated with many health and welfare problems but also misleads the public who can suffer emotionally and financially.” Dr Susan Moreland, Veterinary Surgeon & Bengal Breeder

“Recognising that there is ongoing demand from the public for pedigree cats, I am passionate about ensuring that the kittens bred not only have the best start in life; free from infections, well socialised and confident, but also a long healthy life spared unnecessary suffering that can stem from avoidable genetic diseases or from deliberately breeding for extreme and unnatural physical characteristics.” Dr Eleanor Mardell

We’re proud to introduce Rosie Bescoby, , as the second member of our Expert Panel.

As a Certificated Clinical Animal Behaviourist with The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour, a full member of the , and registered as both a Clinical Animal Behaviourist and an Animal Training Instructor with the , Rosie is our resident feline behaviour expert. She guest lectures for veterinary students, veterinary nurse students, and animal behaviour and training students, and has worked closely with over 20 veterinary practices in her area, providing advice and support to local clients.

“Breeding behaviourally and physically healthy kittens is vital for their welfare but also so new owners can be confident their pet has the best chance of living a long and happy life. Avoidance of stress during a Queen’s pregnancy and kitten’s early life experiences is really important, as well as the environment in which they are reared in terms of socialisation experiences and enrichment opportunities.” Rosie Bescoby

Did you know?

Just like humans, cats can donate blood for transfusion when another cat is unwell and requires red blood cells, plasma or platelets to get better.

You can volunteer your cat as a blood donor at your local veterinary clinic! Your cat will need to be:

✅ Between 1 and 8 years old
✅ Over 4.5kg in weight (but not overweight)
✅ Generally well (not on any medications and have normal blood test results)
✅ Calm in temperament and not stressed by trips in the car or visits to the vet
✅ Up to date with vaccinations and worming/flea treatments
✅ An indoor cat (preferably, to reduce the risk of infectious disease)
✅ Free of FIV, FeLV and any other known infectious diseases in the area

Visit the Cat Care Guides section of the website for more information and guidance ❤️

We’re proud to introduce Dr Jo Lewis, , as the first member of our Expert Panel.

Jo is an award-winning AAFP Certified Cat Friendly Vet and author of “What’s My Cat Thinking?”. With over two decades of vet experience and a lifetime of feline adoration, Jo's passion and unique approach has culminated in her founding The Cat Vet and the UK's first home visiting vet clinic dedicated to cats, the Think Like a Cat Academy, and a popular online blog.

Jo is also a member of ISFM, the veterinary division of , and is a Mum to three cats, Willie , Harri and Celine !

“Tomorrow’s pedigreed cats are a direct result of the choices made by today’s breeders and the people who buy them. We live in a world that is infatuated with buying ‘things’ based on aesthetics, status and impulse - a mindset that’s a recipe for disaster when it comes to choosing a pet. Anything that helps educate breeders and cat people, and secures a better future for cats, is definitely something I want to be a part of!” Dr Jo Lewis

CAT FACT 🧠

The domestic cat’s direct wild ancestor is not naturally sociable, and doesn’t live in packs like the lion or wolf. So, it's pretty amazing that the cat has evolved to form social bonds with humans, in less time than it has taken the dog to do the same. Incredible!

Experts theorise the domestication process started around the same time humans began to store grains inside their dwellings. Cats were welcome visitors as they took care of the rodents who were inevitably attracted.

This mutually beneficial arrangement would ultimately have led to an amiable female cat giving birth indoors at some point, and her kittens growing up around humans from day one. Of course the humans wouldn't have been able to resist a cuddle. We can relate! 👉

However, with unregulated marketplaces enjoying online success, having confidence you’ve found a responsible breeder is never a guarantee. With the over-abundance of advice available, understanding the steps to avoid supporting irresponsible breeding practices, and losing hundreds of pounds, is confusing and overwhelming. Through searching for a kitten ourselves, we experienced the same worry and anxiety.

𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀.

Every member of our community has been screened for responsible and ethical breeding practices, bringing you peace of mind that your kitten is healthy, happy and ready to go to their forever home.

We’re here to hold your hand from start to finish, and will guide you through your search, application, visit to the litter, payment and the ongoing care of your new feline friend.

𝗟𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗼.

Our mission is to stamp out irresponsible breeding for good by creating a safe and supportive community the public knows to turn to. Together we can solve the problem for everyone and every animal.

Launching December 2021 👀 Visit the link in our bio to register for alerts when kittens are available.

Stay tuned this week to meet our feline veterinary and behavioural Expert Panel ❤️
