Is Your Pet Trying to Tell You Something? 🐕

September is the start of Animal Pain Awareness Month! 💖 As pet parents, it’s not always easy to know when our furry friends are in pain, but it’s crucial to learn the signs to help them live comfortably.

This month encourages all of us to learn about pain management—whether it’s acute or chronic. Here’s what to look for:

🔍 Behavioural Changes – The most common sign of pain in pets. Watch for anything out of the ordinary, like reduced activity, changes in appetite, or unusual posture.

🐾 Next Steps? If you notice something’s off, don’t wait— schedule a vet appointment to ensure your pet’s well-being. We have also found dog physiotherapists to be an excellent resource.

👉 Share Your Story: Have you ever helped your pet through pain? Share your experience and a picture of your pet in the comments below. You might help someone else! 📸👇

💕 5 Habits Pet Parents Need to Let Go of Today: 💕

❌ Walking the same route with your dog every single day.
❌ Rushing your dog through walks without letting them fully explore.
❌ Skipping training sessions because you think your dog already knows the basics.
❌ Shouting in frustration when your dog misbehaves.
❌ Assuming your dog doesn’t need socialisation if they’re already friendly.

Here’s what to do instead:
✅ Vary your walking routes and environments to stimulate your dog’s senses and prevent boredom—just like we do in our training programs.
✅ Allow your dog to sniff and explore during walks; it’s their way of gathering information and reducing stress.
✅ Incorporate regular training sessions to reinforce obedience and teach new skills, ensuring your dog remains responsive and engaged.
✅ Focus on techniques that encourage good behaviour and build trust.
✅ Continue to socialise your dog in different settings, helping them adapt to new environments and stay well-rounded, as we do during our training and daycare.

You’re doing your best for your four-legged, and we know it’s easy to slip into these habits. But now that you know what to do instead, we hope you’ll give them a try!

Which habit will you be working on first? If you have anything to add, please share in the comments below. 👇

🌊🐾 **Doggy Day at the Beach!** 🐾🌊

Did you know 1 in 10 city dogs have never been to the beach? Molly from our Doggy Daycare team decided to change that for two of our boarding pups this week! 🐶💛 She took them on a special trip to Camber Sands 📍, giving them a taste of sun, sand, and sea during their stay with us.

Just an hour and 20 minutes from South London, Camber Sands is the perfect hidden gem for a doggy day out. With miles of sandy shores and fewer crowds, it’s the ideal spot for your pup to run free and enjoy the last days of summer. ☀️🐕 And don’t forget to pick up a doggy ice cream for the ride home—just be careful with those car seats! 😉

Why not make your dog’s summer extra special? Rent a Zipcar, turn up the aircon, and treat your furry friend to a beach adventure they’ll never forget. 🐾

Jake is an exceptional dog trainer whose dedication and compassion are evident in every interaction. Our staffy mix, Skye, began a three-week rehabilitation program with him after developing reactivity towards men due to an unfortunate incident. Jake’s approach has been incredible from the start. He created a warm and safe environment for Skye, treating her with utmost kindness and understanding. Despite the challenges, Skye has made very impressive development under Jake’s guidance. His training methods are not only effective but are also clearly communicated, making it easy for us to apply his teachings at home. Jake goes above and beyond in his training sessions, ensuring that both Skye and we have the tools necessary for her ongoing training and wellbeing. What truly sets Jake apart is his genuine care and connection with the dogs.

Skye absolutely adores him, and it’s clear that his interactions are built on respect and affection. Our overall experience with Fetch and Retrieve was very pleasant. From beginning to end, they were attentive, listening to our questions and concerns, which made us feel supported throughout Skye’s training process.

We are so grateful to have Jake as our trainer. He has equipped us with invaluable insights and techniques to help manage and continue Skye’s training. We highly recommend Jake to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, patient, and caring dog trainer.

🤗 Let’s get a fun little thread going. 🤗

How old is your dog? 🐶💖

Duke will be 8 in a few days and I honestly don’t know where that time has gone!

I’d be very grateful if the Universe would stop the clock now so she doesn’t get any older. 😆

Post your numbers (and a pic of your pup of course) in the comments below.

🐾 Here are 7 things your dog wants you to know about their daily routine. 🐾

💕 Tip 1: Provide ample playtime and socialisation. Dogs thrive on interaction with their fellow furry friends. Regular play sessions at Fetch & Retrieve keeps your pup physically active and help hone their social skills, making for a happier and well-adjusted pet.

💕 Tip 2: Reward good behaviour. Positive reinforcement goes a long way in shaping your dog’s behaviour. Whether mastering a new trick or displaying good manners during daycare sessions, acknowledging and rewarding their efforts with treats and praise reinforces positive behaviours, making them more likely to repeat them.

💕 Tip 3: Maintain a consistent routine. Dogs thrive on structure and predictability. At Fetch & Retrieve, we follow a consistent daily schedule for activities, meals, and rest times.

💕 Tip 4: Keep them mentally stimulated. Just like humans, dogs need mental exercise to stay sharp and engaged. Incorporate brain games, puzzle toys, and training sessions into your dog’s routine to challenge their minds and prevent boredom.

💕 Tip 5: Respect their space and boundaries. Dogs have their preferences when it comes to personal space and interactions. While some may enjoy cuddles and belly rubs, others prefer their space. At Fetch & Retrieve, we ensure that each dog’s needs and boundaries are respected, creating a safe and comfortable environment for all.

💕 Tip 6: Prioritise safety. Safety should always be a top priority, from ensuring secure play areas to using proper equipment during walks and activities.

💕 Tip 7: Foster a positive relationship through trust and communication. Building a strong bond with your dog is essential for a happy and fulfilling relationship.

Today’s top tips are brought to you on behalf of every dog that ever lived!

We hope you’ll put them to good use.

🤔 We’ve had a few questions about our doggy daycare service recently. 🤔

So for ease, I thought I’d answer those here just in case you’ve been wondering the same.

⭐️ What is Doggy Daycare and why would my dog benefit from it?
Our Doggy daycare is a facility where dogs can socialise, exercise, and receive mental stimulation in a supervised environment. Dogs benefit from daycare by improving their human and canine interactions, exercising regularly, and reducing boredom and anxiety when their owners are away.

⭐️ What are the safety measures in place at your doggy daycare?
Our facility prioritises safety with staff trained in canine behaviour and animal first aid, secure fencing, and strict vaccination requirements. We also maintain a clean and hygienic environment to prevent illness. Our team-to-dog staffing ratio meets the Animal Welfare Act’s Higher Standard of 1:8.

⭐️ What is your cancellation policy?
We request at least 7 days’ notice when cancelling, amending or pausing a booking. This allows us time to offer the space to someone else and a higher chance we can accommodate a replacement date for you. We can issue a credit for that day if you do not have a new date yet.

I hope that helps clarify a few things if you’ve been sitting on the fence about working with us.

There are 3 major changes I’ve noticed in the pet industry recently. Not all of them are good!

🐾 Change 1 - Rescue centres are seeing the highest volume of dogs in their care than ever before. This is mainly due to a surge of people getting dogs during Covid, and now the cost of living crisis has meant they’re having to give them up.

🐾 Change 2 - There are more Pup-friendly cafes than ever before. Cafés and coffee shops are realising the mutual benefits that come from opening their doors to dog-lovers, which means it’s now easier than ever to find a dog-friendly spot to enjoy a coffee or a bite to eat with your pooch!

🐾 Change 3 - French Bulldogs & Cockapoos are set to become the the nations favourite dog breeds, knocking the Labrador Retriever off the top spot. Thanks to it’s family-friendly demeanour the Labrador has long been the UK’s breed of choice. However, recent reports suggest the Frenchie and Cockapoo are poised to officially battle it out for ‘top dog’ in 2024.

Here’s why each of these is important:

🐶 If there’s one thing this has taught us, it’s that we need to be far more mindful about our circumstances before we bring a new dog or puppy into our homes. We must have absolute confidence that we can provide the care they need and have enough funds to support them fully.

🐶 We no longer need to choose between a day out in the city and staying close to home with our dogs, they can join us while also getting the benefit from lots of new positive experiences.

🐶 With new breeds comes new challenges. Always choose a reputable breeder and research your pet-care provider. Both should know your breed and the specific requirements needed to deleiver first-class welfare for your dog.

What are your thoughts on these recent changes? 🤔

😕 One of the biggest mistakes we made before starting Fetch & Retrieve, was taking the good behaviour of our dogs for granted. 😕

We often overlooked the moments when they were well-behaved, only paying attention when they were acting out or being reactive. All dogs are good most of the time, and recognising their positive behaviour is crucial!

🐾 The problem that presents: For many dog owners, this mistake contributes to dog reactivity. Ignoring the good, mellow interactions our dogs have with others and only focusing on their fearful moments can lead to various behavioual issues.

🐾 Sum up what we recommend instead: Take note and praise your furry friends for their good behaviour. Whether it’s a successful doggy greeting or calmly sitting by your side in the presence of other dogs, acknowledge and reward them. It’s essential to reinforce positive behavior to improve overall behavior and well-being. 🙌

🤔 Closing question: How often do you acknowledge and praise your dogs for their good behaviour? Let us know in the comments below!
