It's wonderful when a business goes out of its way to make our trainee dogs welcome! The staff at Pret a Manger in the St David's Shopping Centre, Cardiff, deserve a big pat on the back for being so welcoming and helpful to yellow labrador retriever Eliza and her trainer Jemma when they visited this morning. Guide dogs must learn how to behave in a busy cafe or restaurant, and positive experiences like this are invaluable during the training process.

Meet Eliza, another of our new trainees! This lovely 16-month-old golden retriever was raised in Devon. She’ll be put through her paces by Academy trainer Lexie, who is pictured alongside Eliza in some long grass at our centre in Cardiff.
A trainee dog like Eliza stays with a foster family for the duration of training, which can be up to 20 weeks. It’s a great way to enjoy the company of a well-mannered young dog in the evenings and at weekends - one who goes to work when you do!
Research from Guide Dogs shows that many people would like to own a dog but struggle due to work commitments. The cost of living crisis is another barrier. Fostering a trainee guide dog could be the answer, as we cover all the dog’s expenses, including training, food and vet costs, in return for the foster family’s love and care during evenings and weekends.
Fosterers do the ‘school run’ for the dog in training, so this role is ideal for someone within easy reach of St Mellons. They also help the dogs to become life-changers by keeping up their training at home. To find out more about becoming a fosterer, visit www.guidedogs.org.uk/fosterer
