True or False Tapeworm Challenge! Pets can get tapeworm from ingesting fleas?

True! Pets can indeed get tapeworms from ingesting fleas. Fleas (and lice!) can carry tapeworm larvae, and when pets groom themselves they can accidently swallow an infected flea, becoming hosts to these sneaky parasites.

It’s a reminder of the importance of not only preventing tapeworms, but also keeping those pesky fleas at bay. Speak to us about the best parasite prevention protocol for you and your pet. 🐈🐩

Heading into the summer months, we are seeing more young birds brought into the practice, sometimes unnecessarily.
🐦If a young bird is found on the ground, fully feathered and uninjured, it is likely that they are a fledgling. The young of most familiar garden birds fledge once they are fully feathered, but before they can fly. These fledglings spend a day or two, sometimes longer, on the ground while their flight feathers complete their growth.
🐦If the bird isn't in danger, please leave it where you found it. Fledglings are extremely unlikely to be abandoned by their parents. The parents are probably just away collecting food - or are hiding nearby, keeping a watchful eye, or even being frightened away from their youngster by your presence. You should leave fledglings where they are, in the care of their own parents.
🐦If the bird is in a busy path or road, you can pick it up and move it to a safer location as close to where you found it as possible, ideally in hearing distance.

Factoid: “Caniche Royale” is a legitimate term sometimes used in France and Quebec to refer to a Standard Poodle.

As an aside, while the Poodle is the national dog of France, there is no such breed as the “French Poodle.” In France, Poodles are known as the Caniche, or “duck dog,” while the breed is recognized by the FCI as Caniche. The FCI goes on to state that etymologically, the French word “caniche” (Poodle) comes from “cane”, the French word for a female duck. In other countries, the name of the breed is associated with splashing around in water. In fact, the English name, “poodle” is derived from the German word pudel, or pudelin, which means to splash in the water.

🐕 Oil Seed R**e is NOT highly toxic to dogs. The scent can be overpowering, causing dogs to get lost. Some dogs suffer allergic reactions to the sap, and they'll probably throw up if they eat it. But it isn't deadly. However, please keep your dog on the footpath through r**e (and any other crops) as any damage causes farmers to lose money.
🐕 Ice is NOT deadly. If it's a warm day, your dog might enjoy some ice in their water bowl or a frozen treat. Freezing food stuffed toys makes them last longer. Raggies soaked in chicken broth and frozen are great for teething. But if your dog is suffering heat exhaustion, avoid ice. The shock of icy water on the stomach could cause vomiting and further dehydration.
🐕 Adders are rarely deadly, but their bites cause very unpleasant and painful wounds. If you suspect an adder bite.call your vet and get there as soon as possible. Carry or stretcher your dog if possible. Cool water might soothe the pain a little, but don't delay getting to the vet. Antivenom is not essential, but your vet will know where the nearest supply is if necessary. Adder bells probably don't work, walking with a stick (which vibrates the ground), and keeping your dog on the path is safest.
🐕Most garden bulbs are NOT deadly. A nibble of a daffodil or bluebell leaf may cause stomach irritation, that's all. Eating a large amount of bulbs could be dangerous. Some garden plants, including Foxglove, Lily of the Valley, and Oleander, are toxic in small quantities and should be avoided.
🐕 Ticks must only be removed with a suitable tick hook or similar tool. They must never be smothered in liquid soap, doused in alcohol, burnt, or squashed. If the tick is disturbed it is more likely to infect your pet (or you!) if it is carrying disease.

At any moment in history, the smartest dog breeds have served as more than man’s best friend: They’ve been navigators and field guides, wartime comrades, detectives, garbage collectors, movie stars and security consultants, as renowned canine researcher and professor Stanley Coren, PhD, points out in his iconic book The Intelligence of Dogs.

“There are three types of dog intelligence,” says Coren, who defines canine smarts by the way dogs interact with humans:

Instinctive: What the dog has been bred by humans to do
Adaptive: How well the dog learns from its environment to solve problems
Working and obedience: How hard the dog is willing to work to please its people and do its jobs
What underpins all three, explains Coren, is the dog’s desire and ability to communicate effectively with humans—both by understanding its human’s signs, actions and commands, and by expressing itself via barks, body movements and actions.

The average dog can understand 160 words, according to Coren, and some dogs comprehend as many as 250 or more. But what may be even more fundamental to effective communication between dogs and humans is that dogs, as a general rule, actually care. “Dogs are very attentive to and responsive to us,” Alexandra Horowitz, head of the Dog Cognition Lab at Columbia University’s Barnard College, told the American Kennel Club (AKC). From Reader’s Digest 2024. 🐾🐾🧡🖤🧡

There has long been debate about which dogs are healthier, pure breeds or mixed breeds, but science is shedding light on anecdotal evidence that has created much misinformation. Recently, a huge 15-year study at University of California-Davis was concluded. The researchers studied 27,254 dogs with inherited disorders to find some answers.

Unfortunately, many people misunderstand the term 'hybrid vigor'. They believe this means that mixing breeds creates healthier pets. But they are incorrect.

Hybrid vigor is created when you cross two different species. Take the mule for example. A cross of two different species, the horse and the donkey. However, designer/mixed breeds are not a cross of different species. In fact, when you cross two breeds, you can double up on health issues. This is especially likely when you have the same disease tendency in both breeds.

Anita Oberhauer PhD was on the UC-Davis research team. Here’s what she says about the labradoodle, for example …

…“It’s a Lab and a Poodle crossed. A Labrador has the same likelihood of having epilepsy, hip dysplasia, Addison’s disease as a Poodle. So if the sire has the ‘disease liability genes’ for any of those conditions … and the mother has the liability genes for Addison’s, epilepsy, hip dysplasia, you breed them together and the offspring will have it.”

Study Results?
The theory that purebred dogs are more prone to disease doesn’t really hold up.

Of 24 disorders the researchers monitored, more than half (13) were about the same in purebred vs mixed breed dogs. Ten disorders were more prevalent in purebred dogs than in mixed breed dogs. Every disorder was seen in the mixed-breed population...every...single...one.

But in this study … only one disorder was more likely in mixed-breed dogs than purebred. That one disorder was cranial cruciate ligament rupture. And it was significantly higher … 30%. The researchers didn’t really know why this might happen. It’s possible combining different physical conformations reduces the resilience of the ligaments.

Today our little pack said goodbye to our precious Lizzie.

Our hearts are so broken…Lizzie joined our family in 2016 after being rescued from a puppy breeding farm by Many Tears. Lizzie was so broken, thin and terrified of everyone. Having Toby as her buddy was so crucial to her rehabilitation. His gentleness and cheeky habits helped Lizzie to became a wonderful dog. We never knew her exact age, but certainly the first years of her life were not pleasant and this has contributed to her health problems late in her life. This has made it very hard for us to come to terms with loosing her so soon. I’m a great believer that things happen at the right time for a reason. 2016 was such a blessed year for us: Matt finished school, we moved to our new house for a new start and so it was a new start for Lizzie too. She loved her walkies, especially if this involved chasing rabbits in the fields or squirrels in the woods. We are so grateful for the wonderful memories Lizzie has left imprinted in our hearts.Looking through the pictures (it was always difficult to take pictures of Lizzie as she was always right by my side) how will I get used to her absence? She was my shadow. Thank you to all our dear friends that have loved Lizzie over the last 8 years of her life. She was wary of strangers but she was very clever at trusting the right people, especially
men.
Sleep well my beautiful Lizzie…the tears will stop one day.
