Are you ready for a hot week ahead?

Whether you love the heat or not, it’s important to stay mindful of the rising temperatures this week. Here are a few tips to ensure everyone stays safe and comfortable, including our beloved pets:

• Check the Temperature: Make it a habit to monitor the daily temperatures.
• Protect Your Pets: To avoid a trip to the vet, remember this simple rule: if you can't hold the back of your hand on the pavement for five seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.
• Optimal Walking Times: Avoid walking your dog during midday or in direct sunlight. Opt for early mornings or late evenings, and seek out shaded paths as much as possible.

Enjoy the lovely weather and remember to look after each other and our furry friends.

Last Thursday evening we had our last dog training session at Rubys Yard Atherstone. Everyone did really well, they received their certificate and Ruby's Yard is such a great venue.

Another Hot Day: Keeping Our Dogs Safe

Hello everyone,

We're experiencing another hot day, and while I hope you're enjoying the sunshine, it's important to remember the potential dangers hot weather poses for both us and our animals, especially dogs.

When it comes to exercise or walks on hot days, be mindful of the temperature. A simple test: if you cannot comfortably place the back of your hand on the pavement, your pet will struggle too.

Some Tips:

Walk your dogs early in the morning or late in the evening when it's cooler.
Stick to shaded areas during walks.
Consider using cooling aids: one of my hounds loves wearing a cool coat, while the other prefers lying on a cooling mat.

Just like us, some dogs love the sunshine while others avoid it. If your dog enjoys being outside, monitor them closely.

Signs of Heat Stroke in Dogs:

Excessive panting, which can lead to distressed or noisy breathing.
Restlessness or agitation, pacing, seeking shade or water.
Drooling.
Red gums or tongue.
Increased heart rate.
Vomiting or diarrhoea.
Lethargy, drowsiness, or uncoordinated movements.

What to Do If Your Dog Shows Signs of Heat Stroke:

Move to a shaded, ideally cool, area.
Pour tap water over your dog (avoid cold water to prevent shock).
Place wet towels over your dog.
Call your vet immediately.
Offer a small amount of water to drink.
Continue to pour water over your dog until their breathing stabilizes.
Avoid pouring water over their head to prevent drowning.

It's a cliché, but prevention is better than cure. Vets frequently warn about the tragic, needless deaths of pets during hot weather. Please take care of your furry friends, and don't forget to look after yourself too!

I love this video of Timmy (white dog) inviting Caesar (black dog) to play. The impact of Caesar ignoring Timmy is so swift. This is dog communication at work. Because Caesar ignores Timmy, Timmy very quickly disengages. This is why I always say where possible, ignore unwanted behaviour and reward wanted behaviour.
