Our answer is a resounding yes!

Regardless of your pet’s life stage, a Pet Health Plan is always beneficial. Let’s see why:
👉 A puppy or kitten will benefit from 50% off primary vaccinations and parasite prevention treatments. You also get unlimited digital vet support 24/7 with VidiVet, should your curious new furry friend decide to get into trouble.
👉 An adult pet will also benefit from vaccinations when required and parasite treatments.
👉 For a senior pet, annual health checks are essential to detect and treat any potential health problems as early as possible, which are included in the plan.

At Doorstep Vet, we offer two different health plans, so you can choose the one that best fits your family. Head over to our website for more information 🔗 https://doorstep.vet/pet-health-plans/

Did you know that January is Walk Your Dog Month? 🐾🐕

Exercise is a vital component of our dogs’ happy lives, and going for frequent walks is one of the best ways to ensure your furry friend has all the physical and mental stimulation they need!

Here are some top tips for the best walks of the season:

❄️ On very cold and windy days, consider keeping your walks shorter to avoid discomfort due to the temperature.

🔦 As the daylight hours are still reduced, ensure you and your dog have reflective material that allows you to be seen by passing cars.

What is your dog walking routine like? Let us know in the comments below 👇

Just like us, as our dogs age, their mental processes decline. Although looking after their physical health is important, looking after their brain health is essential for your senior pets to have an excellent quality of life. 🐶

This mental decline is know as canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD), and something that can help if you suspect that your dog has it is the acronym DISHAA:

D – Does your dog show disorientation in a place they know well?

I – Has the way your dog interacts with the family changed?

S – Have there been changes to your dog’s sleeping patterns?

H – Is your dog house soiling?

A – Has your dog unlearned their ability to do certain activities?

A – Does your dog have moments of anxiety?

Get in touch with us if you spot any of these signs in your golden oldie. Although there’s no cure for CCD, there’s a lot we can do for your pet, such as adjusting their environment, nutrition and medications.

Did you know that cats' paws contain glands that release pheromones? 😺

When a cat scratches their nails, they leave their natural scent on the chosen surface, which acts as a way of marking their territory. These smells are practically undetectable by our human noses, but other cats will be able to detect them and notice that there’s another cat nearby.

This is why scratching things is instinctive for your feline friend! So, if you don't want them to ruin your sofa, it’s important to make sure they have appropriate surfaces, such as scratching posts around. Additionally, scratching their nails is also beneficial as it helps to stretch muscles, relieve stress, and wear down the nails so they don’t become too long and end up curling into the paw pad!

Fatty liver disease typically occurs when a cat loses weight too quickly, either because of an aggressive diet plan (usually due to excess weight), or due to another disease that leads to appetite loss, or stress.

Essentially, due to the cat not eating, the body starts mobilising fat to the liver to be turned into fuel (glucose). The problem is the cat’s liver can’t process the fat fast enough, resulting in a situation where liver cells can’t operate properly, which can be fatal without rapid treatment!

If you notice your cat is not eating, give us a call immediately!

Did you know that behavioural problems are one of the main reasons for people giving up their dogs?

When we have a dog join our family, especially a puppy, we need to be mindful that there’s a lot they need to learn! Their learning curve might be difficult for you to navigate on your own, and this can lead to behavioural problems, such as:

🐕 Control problems like pulling on the lead, and not coming when called

🐕 Attention-seeking behaviours like jumping up to people, and clinginess

🐕 Aggressive behaviours towards other dogs, or even people

🐕 Fear/avoidance behaviours like anxiety around other dogs, or loud noises (such as fireworks)

If you’re struggling with any of these, it’s important not to resort to negative reinforcement/positive punishment. Shouting at your dog or using training equipment that’s unpleasant to them can result in even more behavioural issues due to the fear and anxiety these methods usually cause.

If you’re thinking about getting a dog, or have a dog with behavioural issues, please get in touch with us and we can help you find the best solutions for you and your pet!

The Christmas countdown has already started, and although this is a wonderful time of the year, it can also bring some concerns for pet owners!

Remember to keep these away from your furry friends:

🍫 Food that contains chocolate, sweeteners (like xylitol), raisins or grapes and high fat content

💐 Plants like lilies, holly, ivy and any essential oils

🎄 Unprotected Christmas decorations

🕯️ Lit candles

We hope you have a happy and safe Christmas season! If something unexpected happens, we are always on the other end of a call or message, so don’t hesitate to contact us if you need help during the holidays.

Our pets are living longer and longer these days, and although that means we get to spend more time with them, it also increases the likelihood of them being diagnosed with a chronic illness at some point in their lives. 🐈🐕

Here are some tips for dealing with a long-term disease:

👉 Don't be afraid to ask us difficult questions or to speak up when you don't fully understand what we're explaining to you.

👉 We will provide appointment summaries after your appointment, so you don’t have to remember everything we say.

👉 Monitor the evolution of your pet's clinical signs and bring them in (or give us a call) if you spot something concerning.

👉 If you need to leave your pet with someone else, make sure they have all the necessary instructions to take care of your pet and our phone number saved on their phone if needed.

Ultimately, we're here to help you and your pet navigate this difficult situation, so don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns!
