Gundog training is not just for working dogs! This Pet Gundog Course is aimed at pet dogs. It teaches general obedience such as loose lead walking, heelwork, ignoring distractions and focus on handler when outdoors. We do also cover retrieves and the use of a whistle. This course is taught in a fun, positive and force-free style. There is no pressure on you, and no pressure on your dog. It’s more about building your relationship with your dog in an outdoor, distracting environment.

Last couple of places left on our Scent Detection course commencing Sunday 4th August.
This course is suitable for all breeds and age of dogs. Perfect if your dog is on restricted exercise, is recovering from illness or injury (or even if you are!), if it’s too hot for their normal walk, or if you are short on time.
Sniffing and searching for scent is both mentally and physically tiring for dogs. It releases “happy” hormones which makes them feel good. It is also incredibly easy for us to engage in this activity with our dogs. You don’t need a lot of time ……and you don’t need a lot of space!
Book now! https://bookwhen.com/belvoir
Belvoir Paws & Claws will be at Colston Bassett Summer Market tomorrow, judging the dog show. You could be in with a chance of winning the top prize of a free private dog training session (donated by ourselves 😀) and a canine massage session involving the manipulation of soft tissue to alleviate chronic muscular pain (kindly donated by Katy Conway, professional canine massage therapist and WEBB practitioner of Time For Pooch - www.timeforpooch.co.uk).
There will also be lots of other stalls, cream tea, Pimms/Prosecco and a barbeque. You’ll find us near the pimms and prosecco tent 😉
Two more IMDT Grade 1 graduate pups last night 🤩. These two did absolutely amazing 🤩
KEEP YOUR DOGS SAFE! The summer brings with it some additional risks for our pets such as blue-green algae, grass seeds, heatstroke, ingestion of poisons such as some plants/bulbs, fertilisers and pesticides. Would you know what to do or who to call? Do you have the poison helpline number in addition to your veterinary clinic’s number in your phone for easy and quick access? And how about is your pet went missing? Would you know what to do? Drone To Home offer the most amazing and dedicated service for finding your pet. Keep their number handy! You hopefully will never need it - but if you do, it could just save you some very valuable time in reuniting your precious pet and returning them back home safely.
What an absolutely fantastic job Drone to Home do. This dog belongs to friends of mine. The dedication and commitment the team put in to finding your dog is incredible. They were still out in the middle of the night searching in the dark and very thick cover. Just absolutely amazing people! Thank goodness she’s home.
Congratulations to Buddy and his super mum on passing their UK Sniffer Dogs Progression Grade 1. Buddy is a super star sniffer with a fantastic systematic search pattern. 🎓Fabulous work team Buddy 🎉🎓
Why gundog training isn’t just for dogs that will work in the shooting field.
You might have bought your pet Labrador, Golden Retriever, Spaniel, or Vizsla with the expectation that they will simply fit into your everyday life like any other breed of dog.
Before they arrived, you might have imagined them sleeping next to you while you work from home, having a leisurely stroll on your daily dog walk, or inviting them to accompany you on trips to the local dog-friendly pub and days out to the beach.
What you’ve got instead is a ball of chaos and energy that struggles to settle anywhere, let alone somewhere exciting like a busy pub.
A hunting machine that pulls you from scent to scent on what has now become known as the daily drag.
A dog you don’t trust off-lead in the local park or countryside because you’re never sure if they will come back when you call them.
Indeed, owners who are uninitiated to a gundog’s way of thinking and naive to their hunting prowess do struggle to teach reliable recall and loose lead walking or heelwork in the presence of distractions such as wildlife and scent.
We all remember the desperate cries of Fenton’s owner as his Labrador failed to recall, choosing to chase deer through Richmond Park instead.
But on top of that, with no outlet for their innate desires to hunt, chase, and retrieve, pet gundogs are more susceptible to developing lasting and damaging behavioural problems.
Sadly, I have seen it all: resource guarding, constant frustration barking, obsessive shadow or tail chasing, destructive chewing, and general over-arousal and over-excitement.

Need help training your dog? I still have a space left on the puppy course and pet gundog course. This video is of my cocker spaniel - the star of Steve Mann’s book - Easy Peasy cocker spaniel. Contact me for more information [email protected] www.belvoirpawsandclaws.co.uk 07966 793625
Playing around gundog training with my 2. My girl, the working cocker, who’s 16 months is super keen on retrieving. My boy, the brittany, who’s 2 enjoys retrieving but his real passion is searching, so he’s great at scentwork and is super motivated by searching for scent articles that I have hidden. What’s really important here is that they both have fun. I don’t care about perfection or them being super obedient. I have an incredibly strong bond with both of them, they are my best friends and their happiness is what’s most important to me. Dogs are incredible! If you are privileged to share your life with a dog, be kind, patient and loving. They are not robots. Cherish every moment, because every single moment you spend with them is special.
Heelwork! Who would believe that at the start of our training this cute as a button cocker spaniel would pull like a train and jump up and down and chew her lead? Just look at her now! What a transformation! Fabulous off lead heelwork and great focus! Her wonderful owner has been committed to her training and the results are a joy to see. Well done team Lili 🐕🐾
The stop whistle. Also known as an emergency stop or remote sit. This is my 15 month girl giving you a lovely demonstration 😍 I love to teach this one! It forms part of gundog training and has several uses such as; 🐾 Stopping your dog in an emergency 🐾 Stopping a chase such as running after a rabbit (for some dogs this is far easier for them to perform than being recalled away from the object of their desire) 🐾 To stop and redirect your dog at a distance (such as when they are sent to retrieve a blind in gundog work) If you would like some help in training your dog on the stop whistle please contact me 🐾 www.belvoirpawsandclaws.co.uk
A cheeky little exercise here - teaches impulse control and calling away from distractions. To get what he really wants (the food) he learns that he has to recall to me first. In the training world we refer to this as the Premack Principle. It’s where a more probable behaviour reinforces a less probable behaviour. Think of when you were a child and your were told “if you eat your carrots you can have some pudding”. We can use Premack in lots of different situations, such as your dog giving you eye contact before being released to play with other dogs. Think of “if you do this, you can have this”.
