Why are we target training Sailor? Comment your thoughts below! There are no wrong answers! This was Sailor’s first ever target training sessions. I offered him the target to see if he would be curious enough to touch it but he froze. So I decided to make things a little easier for him and grab a piece of a nut as a lure. You’ll notice I never let him get the nut until he touched that target. You’ll also hear the clicker in the background as that was the very first thing we taught Sailor! This little man is beyond incredible. Given his background we cannot believe how trusting and quick he is with picking things up. It doesn’t just help mentally stimulate your parrot, but it can be used as an interrupt to help your bird move from one mental state to another. Corliss started off being very grumpy with me just being in her space. She woke up in a bad mood! And we all have bad days. If I walked up to her and tried to force her to step up I would have been bitten and likely broke trust! But thanks to simply asking for a few tricks her mind went from apprehension to anticipation. Following up on yesterday’s post about building mutual trust with your parrots; Corliss loves to hold onto and gently nibble on a hand while she’s getting a cuddle! I’m trusting her not to break my hand here, which she could do with ease if she wanted to, and she’s trusting me to provide quality snuggles.
