Last week was by far the busiest week of the term so far with a number of intervention sessions, group workshops, events and school visits. We loved learning about classification of animals, natural habitats and biomes and fun facts about animals from all over the world. A massive thank you to everyone who booked with us and for all the feedback cards and pictures ❤️😁
Bagheera, our American Red Fox, has loved being out on a walk and in the grass today - until it rained! 🌧️💧Stunning isn’t she! 🦊

Today we launched a brand new project of Animal Assisted Intervention programmes at a local primary school In Southend.
These sessions have very generously been funded by a local couple seeking to improve the lives, opportunities and wellbeing of children. This new project aims to target 105 children in need of therapeutic services across Southend between now and Christmas 2024.
Interventions include:
🦎small group wellbeing sessions where children learn about different animals and complete a different animal themed project each week.
🦎Animal Assisted Activity sessions on a 1-2-1 basis where children explore a range of feelings, emotions and coping strategies through animal experiences. These sessions are fun for all.
🦎Animal Assisted Therapy sessions on a 1-2-1 basis. These sessions are structured, outcome focused and should only ever be delivered by a qualified and registered practitioner. Sessions focus on working through intense trauma and adversities that children have faced and require careful planning and review.
All of our intervention programmes are led by Lexi who has worked with children in a professional capacity for over 19 years and has been a qualified social worker for more than 10 years. Lexi also completed a 2 year Diploma in Animal Assited Interventions back in 2020.
🦊 Bagheera is growing up so fast 🦊

It’s all about the animals here at Animalistic Encounters and, not just with the animals in our care. Some of the team volunteer with the National Exotics Animal Rescue Services CIC which focuses on helping injured or abandoned animals across the country.
Last night, Alex and Lexi found themselves on a call helping out this young fox cub who was thought to have had a seizure, had mange and an injury to his leg. He was very dazed and clearly very unwell. As the fox walked past Lexi, she was able to scruff him and secure him into a transport box with minimal effort and distress caused to the fox.
The team took him up to the South Essex Wildlife Hospital at Orsett where he was being checked over by their vet. There is no update on the fox just yet but, he is in the best place if he stands any chance of making a recovery, rehabilitation and being released.
☀️What a week we’ve had! ☀️
This week we started off at a local nursery school helping the children learn about different animals from around the world. The African Train Millipedes were a firm favourite!
We visited a year 2 class midweek helping them learn all about different habitats, what makes a rainforest a rainforest and the life of an Aldabra tortoise as an island dweller.
Yesterday we visited another local school helping their SEN class and nursery classes learn about different animals. They had the opportunity to meet Luco the Tawny Owl, fancy mice, millipedes and Daisy the Aldabra tortoise.

Last month, we had a really tough time saying goodbye to our beloved Tawny Owl Thelma. We believe from CCTV footage, that a wild fox had managed to get up over the back of Thelma’s aviary and, being her usual sassy self, she tried to attack the fox through the steel mesh panels however, ended up sustaining injuries to her wing.
Despite seeking veterinary treatment for her, there was very little that could have been done that would not have impacted her quality of life significantly. The kindest thing we could do was let her go. Loosing her was so unexpected and the team has really struggled to come to terms with loosing her. Thelma was cremated and is now back home with us.
Since loosing Thelma, we have found ourselves in a really privileged position to be able to take on two of Thelma’s younger siblings who hatched last month - Luco & Astrix, who are now 4 weeks old. Both will begin venturing out soon and are already training and causing havoc at HQ.
We currently have some additional building work going on, with new aviaries being built to accommodate all of our birds including Brian the Boobook Owl and Rex the Common Buzzard. The new aviaries will form our designated Bird of Prey area and come complete with electric fences and even better security systems then before.
Loosing Thelma really hit the team hard and we continue to miss her everyday. She had a huge character and was a massive part of who we are. She will be greatly missed.
Amazing pictures drawn for us today of different predators & Prey animals! These are awsome! 😃
🥰 Thank you so much for having us back 🥰

Today we said goodbye to our beautiful boy Murphy. Murphy was a striped skunk and came to live with us as a rescue back in February 2020 having been imported from Ireland and not treated with the love and care he so deeply deserved. Since residing with us here at Animalistic Encounters, Murphy grew in confidence and was deeply loved and adored by so many who had the privilege to meet him and work with him. Murphy had quirks including is obsession for red pepper 🫑 and chasing locusts. Whilst we do not know his exact birthday, his age had caught up with him. In 2022, Murphy had an injury to his spine as the result of a firework going off nearby and more recently his eye sight had deteriorated making navigating very difficult for him. We had noticed considerable changes to his behaviour, appetite and mobility over the past few weeks which have dramatically affected his quality of life. As a team we are truly heart broken and will miss Murphy very very much. 💔🦨
Who likes raw Sweet Potato? We Do! This is how our Prairie Dogs are spending some of their Twixmas! Make sure to turn your volume up to hear the muching.. nom nom Our January offers will be posted in the next day, so look out for a great way to fight off those January blues! 🎄

🌟We are a tiny bit behind with the times but could not resist sharing with you all Thelma's massive achievement. Last week saw us working alongside our amazing friends Essex Kids Camp and for the first time, Thelma (Tawny Owl) flew across an entire school hall (approx 20 meters) over a large group of children sitting on the floor. She flew on command and landed beautifully on Lexi's glove. Thelma came to us as a 4-week-old chick (captive-bred) in April this year and has grown up into an amazing companion and team member. Watch this space for further updates on Thelma's progress and be sure to look out for baby Boobook Brian/Bryony 🤩
🦉 Some flight practice this evening with Thelma the Tawny Owl. She isn't completely feathered yet, but as you can see, is happy to go flying for some food! If you turn your sound on you will hear some amazing slowmo noises as she screams on the way to the glove. Stay tuned for another feathered surprise, but that news will have to wait for another day! 😉 🦎
