This one's a little difference and will test your searching skills, body language awareness and teamwork.
"All Clear" scent work challenge, 26th October. This will be held in the Theatre of the Strathaven Town Mill Arts and Heritage Centre.
Spaces will be limited and bookable in August.
Teaching your dog to drop things is one of the most important skills you'll ever teach them.
It keeps them safe, helps prevent resource guarding and means you can effectively use play as a reward in training ๐ ๐ ๐
There are several ways to teach this, but this way removes any conflict (there's no item to begin with) and it takes less skill on our part than some other methods!
Here's the very first steps!
Notice I hold the toy still at the end when I'm playing and ask for a 'drop'. Making the item 'dead' can really help your dog to let go ๐

Scent Match may be one of the lesser-known UK Scent Sport activities but it's no less fun!
In our Scent Match class, your dog will learn to take a specific scent and then identify and indicate on the object that contains the matching scent.
This is Casseys second session. Some containers are empty and some contain distraction scents. Cassey has a freeze indication when she finds the scent. Eventually, I'll add lids with holes and remove the visuals but pretty pleased with her progress so far!
Our two week intro class is suitable for all ages and levels of experience. Whether you have a seasoned scent dog or a curious beginner, we tailor our training to suit you!

Meet Lucky the Collie! ๐พ
Lucky has a long history of chasing cars, yet here he is, trailing past cars on a busy, wet, and noisy road โ a massive trigger for him. This is the third car weโve passed in a short space of time, and heโs not reacting at all; heโs just focused on trailing! ๐ถ
Mantrailing and nosework in general can be a great addition to a behaviour modification plan.
Seeing him remain calm and focused in such a challenging environment was truly heartwarming. Well done, Lucky! ๐

OK, ok I made that up but timely delivery of reward is so important that maybe it should be shouted about a bit more.
For general training, I vary between using a treat bag and having food in my pockets. And I do mean IN my pockets; not in the packet, not in a plastic bag, not in a tupperware box, not in my hands.
Being able to mark and reward behaviours as they happen is an essential part of good training, even more so at the beginning of your journey.

If your pooch is struggling to link the scent article to the trail layer, keep your eyes peeled for The Tartan Trailing Awards 'Split Trails' skill up sessions.
These sessions systematically introduce the trail of a second person, in a way to ensure success and great learning.
Last night I had a chat with a pup parent about how we can use mat training as an alternative behaviour to rushing at the doorbell (alongside some desensitisation) and jumping up on visitors.
We spend a lot of time teaching this in puppy class and for me, in a multi-dog household, its honestly one of the best behaviours that my dogs know.
Being able to train one dog with others in the room makes life sooooooo much easier!
