As the name suggests, the German Shepard originated in Germany in the late 1800’s. Considered the most intelligent, obedient and loyal of all Shepard dogs, they are commonly utilised as service dogs for the police and military in many countries.

German Shepard’s were originally bred for their intelligence, in the book The Intelligence of Dogs, author Stanley Coren ranked the breed third for intelligence, behind Border Collies and Poodles.

By the beginning of World War I the German Shepherd was popular throughout Germany and quickly spread to other parts of the world. People loved German Shepherds for their loyal and couragous character.

Commonly known as the ‘Alsation’ the German Shepard was assigned this name by Europeans after the world war, where anything associated with Germany became then, temporarily undesirable.

The Tibetan Mastiff, or the Himalayan mountain dog. Used in Tibet for thousands of years as powerful and imposing estate guardians, today’s Tibetan Mastiffs retain their protective instincts, watching over their home and family with endless tenacity.

Due to the isolation of its countries origin and a lack of breeding records, it’s true history is shrouded in mystery, however we do know that the Tibetan Mastiff is an ancient breed that has existed in Asia for thousands of years.

The Tibetan Mastiff was first introduced to the western world in 1847, when it was brought to England. In the early 20th century, the Prince of Wales, George got a pair of Tibetan Mastiffs and brought in enough of the breed to be shown at the Crystal Palace show.

The title of most expensive dog has been held previously by this great breed for years, one mastiff named ‘Big Splash’ reportedly sold for 10 million yuan/ $1.5 million in 2011, the most expensive dog sale then recorded.
