This little cutie is Dexter 🐾

Dexter is a very smol boy with very very big feelings about other dogs. Unfortunately as a young puppy was attacked by another dog so has learnt that screaming at the top of his lungs will keep them away.

We have made some little changes to his daily routine, given him an outlet for his sosig need to scent- which will also help calm him down. He gets rather anxious about the getting ready to leave and exiting the house, so his parents have some homework on door protocol & desensitising to his collar, harness & lead. This is before addressing his reactivity as he is already at a level 8 before even leaving the house so we can’t expect him to succeed whilst out if he is this stressed before.

He did some amazing disengagement from other dogs at their local park and then a lovely calm walk home. 🏡

Well done little one, we’ll see you after Christmas 🎄

✨ SUPPORT TEAM MEMBER 2 ✨

The dog that doesn’t really need an introduction as he is quite literally all over my socials but..
This is Loki, he’s a 22 month old Japanese Shiba Inu. This little boy has been in my life since he was 12 weeks old, and what a whirlwind it’s been.

After we lost our last Shiba boy to Canine Cognitive Dysfunction I knew I needed another Shoob in my life. I’ve grown up with many different dog breeds ranging from GSD’s, Border Collies, Malamutes but these unique little oddballs have my whole heart. I truly believe Yogi sent us Loki, the saying ‘you don’t get the dog you want, you get the one you need’ is so so true. He’s taught me so much in his short little life already, and has made me a much better trainer. He’s taught me that no matter if you do everything right, things can still happen that’s out of your control. You really do have to think outside the box when it comes to working him, but it’s all part and parcel.

He is my doggy soulmate, my bestest bud & the most loving little boy. He’s rather famous in our area, I’ve had people I’ve never seen before say “ahh this must be Loki” 😂

I’m so lucky I have both my heart horse and heart dog in the same period of my life, they both pick me up when I’m sad, force me to get out of my head & are the best support team 💚

Sometimes when we choose a way to train our dogs that feels comfortable for us. It can be hard to talk about the struggles we continue to have.

We know others may choose a different way to train and that often makes us feel like our dog’s behaviour will cause us to be judged, not understood.

But I’m here to tell you, caring for another is hard, being responsible for another is hard, loving someone with their own pain and emotions is hard.

Because it’s hard, it doesn’t mean you’re wrong.

🪩 STEVIE 🪩

This lovely little angel has just joined us for some training walks. She recently got bitten on the muzzle by another dog and since then has fear based reactivity towards unfamiliar dogs.
She is an absolute poppet and so so sweet. She did so well on our first walk despite the pouring rain and then snow. We worked on loose lead, engagement & disengagement from other dogs, plus practicing calming behaviours.

Really looking forward to our next session 💓

She is also named after Stevie Nicks if you couldn’t guess from the hair 🥰

✨ MEET THE TEAM ✨

So who are we and what’s our story?

Jazz- the owner and head trainer here at Hammond’s Hounds & Hooves. I’ve always known i wanted to work with animals, specifically a physiotherapist for dogs & horses, but due to life events unfortunately this never happened. Spent 10 years in the healthcare industry feeling lost and not what I was meant to be doing with my life, my mental health was really suffering. I truly believed I was meant to be helping animals.

Sadly when my parents split up our male Shiba started showing signs of reactivity, which encouraged me to delve deeper into behaviour. The 💡 moment I decided to become a dog trainer was when I was watching a well known TV programme with my grandma, every behavioural issue the dog was showing I discussed with my grandma and what the owners should do, she then said to me “Jazz why don’t you look into becoming a dog trainer”. I’d honestly never thought about pursuing it as a career, but after her comment I did tonnes of research into courses to help further my knowledge. I did a 6 month course and once I passed (with distinction), I quit my job & my business baby was born! (See last photo for pure job quitting joy)

I have honestly never felt happier, I LOVE going to work, I love working with some pretty incredible dogs and their owners and I love constantly learning and developing my knowledge and skills. I have my beady eyes on a diploma which will allow me to apply to become a clinical animal behaviourist as this is my goal career wise.
My goal in life will be to have a plot of land, where I can look out my window & see my horses in my back garden, somewhere where I can have different professionals onsite to create a dog/horse haven to continue my life’s mission to help as many animals as I can.

Someone asked me if I won the lottery if I would give up work, if I’d have been asked this when I worked in healthcare I wouldn’t have hesitated, but doing this job? NO CHANCE 🙅🏻‍♀️ I am so so blessed to spend my days doing what I love & helping owners and their dogs. If only 16 year old jazz could see where she’d be at 30 🥰

I absolutely LOVE this quote. Obviously it’s relevant to all aspects of life, but we’re a dog training page so best believe it’s aimed at dog owners 🫡

When you are working through ANY training with your dog, whether that’s getting a reliable recall or if your dog is reactive to other dogs. It can be sooo easy for us to look at someone else’s dog and compare you and your dog to them.

So I’m here to say, don’t do that 🙅🏻‍♀️

Your journey with your dog is precisely that, YOUR JOURNEY.
If you are working through separation anxiety and you can’t quite get past the 10 minute mark, which you’ve been working on for months, yet someone else who’s just started can now get to half an hour. That’s ok. Every dog is different, every journey is different.

It’s totally fine to grieve the life you imagined with your dog, or even for your life before you got your dog. I firmly believe you don’t get the dog you want, you get the dog you need. So try not worry or compare your dog to someone else’s as you may just miss the progress your dog is making 💕

✨ when you’re looking for an animal professional, why you should look for someone who looks at your animal as a whole ✨

This is a little case study, not on a dog, but my own horse. Regardless of species the message applies.

Beginning of this year I had my saddle fitter out, she noted that his heels were very low and this was causing his hamstrings to be incredibly tight. Which then was causing soreness all along his pelvis and back area, because he was compensating. He was also at high risk of his suspensory ligament snapping. This is not good for horses.
So I got a barefoot trimmer out to see him as his feet were what we needed to start or it would just be a vicious cycle. The person was highly recommended, and is nothing short of amazing. He looks at him as a whole, watches him moving, turning, feels him all over, he doesn’t just come and trim his feet and go. He refers back to previous trims, writes reports giving him scores and with thorough notes. He has also given me lots of different feed options and supplements to aid with healthy hoof regrowth.

After 4 trims (spaced every 6 weeks), his feet are considerably more upright, his muscles and pelvis are much less sore and aligned, he moves much better. And he’s notably happier. He still has a fair way to go, plus needing a brand new saddle (RIP my savings 🪦), but he’s on the right track.

My point is, when you are choosing an animal professional to work with, do research, ask questions. Most of us come into the field of work we’re in as we genuinely want to help, and anyone worth anything will be happy to chat with you, prior to any money exchanging, to discuss how they work.

We can do all the training in the world but if you don’t address the route cause of WHY your animal is displaying that behaviour, nothing will get better ❤️‍🩹

This is Tako 🌮

He’s an overseas rescue so we don’t have an awful amount of history on him. He has some biiiig explosions towards other dogs & horses 💣 His owners have done such a good job of implementing their new skills and he is doing so well!

We had our last session yesterday and I’m so proud of how far they’ve come! He is still young & learning everything about his new life here in the UK. It was a pleasure Tako can’t wait to see how you progress 💚

Just realised I’ve been very quiet on socials recently…

Without pretending everything is fine and dandy, I have been struggling with some things & a bit of imposter syndrome the past few weeks. I know I’m good at what I do but sometimes I can’t control that little voice at the back of my head when things are a bit quiet… I haven’t done hardly any training with Loki as I’ve just felt so meh, but that’s ok, sometimes you just need to spend time with them, without any pressure.

But I have given myself a massive kick up the arse, I’ve got a big change coming soon for the business which I’m really excited about and hoping will elevate it more. Got my workshops starting next week & it’s finally autumn so I’m very happy about cosy season🍂

I also got my second baby tattooed for a cheeky early 30th present from me to me, and I’m obsessed!!!

So I’ve just been enjoying having a break from SM & to spend some quality time with my fur kids, instead of pressuring myself to think about the future I’ve been spending time in the present 💕

Reactive dogs are not broken. They are not damaged goods, or "bad dogs."

As a dog trainer specializing in working with reactive dogs, my objective is not to "fix" these dogs. Nor is it my primary aim to eliminate these reactive behaviors (stay tuned for an explanation).

Reactive dogs are grappling with intense emotions. These feelings can be overwhelming, messy, and puzzling for both our furry friends and us.
Their reactions stem from these emotions, not to make things difficult for us, embarrass us, act out of spite, prove a point, or assert dominance.

Dogs react with purpose.
Barking, growling, and lunging all serve a specific goal:
* Ward off a threat
* Express frustration
* Convey excitement, and more.

Dogs reacting to achieve a goal while overwhelmed with emotions do not require fixing. These dogs need us to listen, understand the root of their reactions, recognize their struggles, and help manage their emotions.

They require guidance in handling emotions, altering their response to triggers, and learning respectful behavior that aligns with their needs while ensuring a safe environment.

Can I fix your dog's reactivity? No - because your dog isn't broken.

Will I assist in teaching your reactive dog to manage and prosper around triggers, so they no longer feel the need to react? Absolutely.

Will I guide you on how to communicate effectively with your dog, understanding them without jeopardizing their well-being? Yes, indeed.

Your dog isn't broken, and it's high time we changed the narrative for our reactive dogs.

⁉️ Is this the year that you take control of your dog's reactivity? My online Reactivity Reclaimed program opens for registration on Friday, but early access is being given to those on my wait list TOMORROW!
