Another barn owl killed by rodenticide.

Rodenticides (AKA rat/mouse poisons) do not address the root cause of rodent infestations and kill wildlife indiscriminately. Rodenticides are ineffective in the long term. Prevention is key in controlling rats and mice problems in your home.

1/ Rodent-proof your home

The first line of defence is to get rid of easy entry points. Mice can squeeze through cracks as small as a ten cent piece. Even the small gaps created by worn thresholds under doors will allow mice access to your home.

- Use metal weather stripping under doors, and weather strip windows.
- Patch cracks in foundations.
- Stuff steel wool around pipes before caulking or plastering.
- Cover dryer vents, attic vents, and roof overhangs with fine mesh metal screening.

2/ Make your home less appealing to rodents

-Remove cosy nesting sites in unused clutter around your house and garage.
- Cut tall grass and weeds back from your house.
- Secure garbage in containers with tight-fitting lids.
- Raise woodpiles about 30 centimetres off the ground. Place them away from your house.
- Never place fatty or oily food waste, eggs, or milk products in the composter.
- Use a layer of heavy metal mesh between the soil and the bottom of the composter.
- Eliminate water sources (like leaky taps, sweating pipes, and open drains).
- Keep your kitchen clean. Store dry food and dry pet food in metal or glass containers.

Choose chemical free means of rodent management. There is no safe use of any rodenticide (rat/ mouse poison).

🦔 HIBERNATING HEDGEHOG 🦔

As temperatures plummet, hedgehogs are more likely to start hibernating. Some will already have been hibernating for a while.

Please take care all year round to avoid disturbing hedgehog nests and hibernacula. Hedgehogs often hibernate in compost heaps, under sheds, in buildings (sheds, garages) that are left open or simply under a pile of leaves or a big plant.

!Think HEDGEHOG whenever you are gardening at any time of year!

🦔 If you accidentally disturb a hibernating hedgehog, cover it back up straight away unless you think you have injured it - in which case seek urgent advice from a rescue.

🐾 If you find a hedgehog that is hibernating in a shed, garage or outbuilding, leave it if you can provide constant access to the outdoors (hibernation is not always continuous). If not (and the hedgehog is now trapped), then you can relocate it into a sturdy wooden hedgehog box filled with plenty of dust extracted barley straw. Place your box in a sheltered area of the garden. Don't relocate it to an entirely new area.

🦔 If you find a tiny hibernating hedgehog or hedgehog apparently hibernating out in the open seek urgent specialist advice from a rescue. You can cause heart failure if you warm them too quickly.

🐾 How do you know if a hedgehog is hibernating and not dead? A hibernating hedgehog will be fully curled in a tight ball with its head not visible (like in this picture). An uncurled hedgehog is not hibernating. It might be dead or it could be alive but very sick and collapsed. Hedgehogs don't tend to die in a tightly curled ball. If you gently touch a hibernating hedgehog, it should 'ripple' slightly.

Thank you for sharing everyone :-)

Xena loves to play, but we are very short of footballs. Partly her fault as she is a little exuberant in her play. If you have any footballs you no longer need, please drop them off at Millbrook's reception. Xena is still waiting for her new home. She is a special girl but if you think you have a special place please read about her on our website. https://www.rspca-millbrook.org.uk/pets/profile?id=131
Thank you.

🍂Leave the leaves wherever you can! 🍃 Everything green in our landscape took water to grow. Removing leaf and needle shed robs our environment of vital moisture, nutrient rich topsoil, and critical habitat🦋🐝...as for me, I mow/mulch the leaves directly back into the lawn and leave the leaves as permanent mulch in my garden beds and surrounding landscape areas. It builds topsoil, smothers weeds and encourages earthworms, beneficial insects like fireflies, ladybugs, butterflies and moths. You know your own yard best, but there are likely at least 1-2 places you can do this...give it a try 🍄🐿🐦
