Cats Protection Cat Welfare Learning Cats Protection's Cat Welfare Learning Team (CWL team) is made up of six Cat Welfare Learning Officers (CWLO) and the Cat Welfare Learning Specialist.

Cat Welfare Learning (CWL) provides training and guidance to staff and volunteers, on all things cat welfare related within Cats Protection, the UK's leading feline welfare charity. Working closely with other departments we develop training on cat welfare and deliver to volunteers and staff across our branches and adoption centres. The CWL team also works closely alongside the Veterinary and Opera

tions Departments to help improve cat welfare and husbandry techniques in centres and branches. We have designed a range of specifically targeted workshops in cat care and behaviour which cover a variety of topics, including how to minimise the risk of feline infectious disease within our centres and branches, best practice handling and restraining, medicating techniques and feline wellbeing. The training aims to teach us how to look at our cat welfare practices from the cat's perspective so that we can minimise their stress, both in the home environment and while in CP care. It delivers messages and guidance in line with our charity vision and aims, and is designed to achieve a wider understanding of cats' specific needs and to help improve cat welfare across the UK.

Scottish Folds are a breed of cat generally known for their folded ears and ‘round’ appearance. The first Scottish Fold cat was born in Scotland in 1961 with a genetic mutation which caused her to have folded ears.

Due to this mutation, Scottish Folds have serious health problems that cause pain and poor welfare. We’d advise against getting a Scottish Fold if you are thinking of getting a cat. Follow the link to find out more.

Find out everything you need to know about Scottish Fold cats, including why their ears are folded and the health problems they may have.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an increasing problem worldwide, affecting both human and animal health.

*But what is AMR?*
Antibiotics are essential when treating many conditions in animals and people, but bacteria are becoming resistant to many antibiotics that we use in human and veterinary medicine.
Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria develop defences that protect them from antibiotic medications, making treatment less effective.

An Antibiotics Amnesty is running throughout November 2023 to encourage pet owners to return unused and out-of-date antibiotic medications prescribed for your pets to your local veterinary practice. This will allow correct and safe disposal of the antibiotic medications, which will avoid contamination of the environment and help prevent antimicrobial resistance due to inappropriate disposal.

Returning unused or out of date antibiotics will also help stop inappropriate antibiotic use.

Some snaps from a recent workshop in the Aberdeen area 😸 Cat Welfare Learning Officer Mhairi and Regional Behaviour Officer Sammie delivered workshops on Understanding Cats' Needs and Feline Body Language, helping us to think about what cats might be trying to tell us and why they do what they do! It was great to be able to come together with the volunteers from Aberdeen and Deeside branches and talk about our favourite topic! 🐈

If you'd like to arrange a workshop for your branch, contact the team at [email protected] and we'll be more than happy to get something into the diary!
