Met the GORGEOUS Duke yesterday 🥰🐾

It's nearly Christmas time, which means pet shop shelves will soon be lined with treats like this. These products are made from rawhide, but how many of us actully know what's in these and how they are made?

Rawhide is actually a by product of leather, usually from horse or cow skin. The skin is Bleached to turn it white, and stop it from decaying. Sometimes this doesn't work and stronger chemicals are used. Arsenic, Mercury and known carcinogens have been found in these treats.

The next stage involves creating the colours and shapes that attract so many of us. Glue is used to stick the hide together to form a nice shape and harmful paints are used to colour it, including red 40 which is a known carcinogen.

" the Material Safety Data Sheet reveals a toxic confection containing the carcinogen FD&C Red 40, along with preservatives like sodium benzoate. But tracking the effects of chemical exposure is nearly impossible when it’s a matter of slow, low-dose poisoning.”– thebark.com

Animal skin would only last a few days before it rots, but this "rawhide" lasts forever. This is because after all that it is then doused in even more chemicals that act as preservatives to stop it rotting.

If that wasn't enough, have you even read the small print warning in the back of these? -

" if large chunks of rawhide are bitten off they may dwell in the dogs stomach and cause blockages, blockages require immediate abdominal surgery and if left or go unnoticed will cause death "

Your dog can easily choke because these treats are so chewy and dogs will often swallow chunks that are too large. When raw hide is wet it gets so slippy that you have little chance of being able to grip it and remove it from a choking dogs throat.

Rather than picking up rawhide, natural dried hide is available from many places including Purple Pup local to us, and lots of lovely, long lasting natural and chemical free alternatives.

What treats do your dogs eat daily?

Its very important when looking at feeding our dogs treats we keep an eye on nutrionial value, fat content and quanity our dogs eat.

My dogs have a few selected treats per day, usally a natural chew to keep them busy throughout the working day. These are lamb muscle pieces, deer skins, fish skins, duck feet, cow hooves and trancheas.

For training I usally make liver cake with chickpea flour, 100% pure protein pate and occasionally cheese and plain chicken.

However although regularly recieving treats we keep track of body compoistion to do this. I make sure there is a rotation of proteins, consistency and flavour aswell as the other added benefits!

DID YOU KNOW!?

Rabbit ears, hairy cow ears and pelts work as a natural de wormer?

Cow hooves, bones and horns are natural teeth cleaners?

Below are just a few benefits to feeding your dogs natural treats over highly processed treats that can cause determential effects to our dogs health.

STRONGER IMMUNITY
HEALTHY PROTEINS
EXCELLENT FOR DOGS COAT - SHINIER, LESS ITCHING AND OVER SHEDDING DUE TO NATURAL ESSENTIAL OILS
EASY ON THE STOMACH
HAIRY ITEMS ACT AS NATURAL WORMING AIDS FOR DOGS, SUCH AS HAIRY RABBIT EARS, LAMB EARS, COW EARS AND HAIRY ROE DEER LEGS
IMPROVED DENTAL HEALTH
WEIGHT MANAGEMENT - NATURALLY LOWER IN CALORIES
IMPROVED PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING

Today I met the handsome Enzo who's a definite herder!

Enzo has to go back to basics with learning how to switch off and learn that movement is okay!

Enzo is also going back on the long line for a few weeks to relearn his boundaries and fun recall / focus games.
