Slow and steady puppy intros with this GORGEOUS little lady. She’s very nervous but each time she shines with how brave she’s becoming. Today was her first bath and blow dry and she rocked it. Think I may be a wee but in love

“Repeat after me. Muzzled dogs are NOT BAD DOGS.

Muzzled dogs have good humans.

Muzzled dogs can have more experiences because they are managed. Their quality of life is INCREASED because of the muzzle.

Muzzled dogs can still have treats.

Muzzled dogs are not miserable.

Muzzled dogs are muzzled for ALL KINDS OF REASONS. Not just aggression. Maybe they eat too much stuff off the ground and get sick. Maybe they play too rough. Maybe they over react when startled. Maybe they want to eat squirrels. Maybe they need to learn better social skills. Not all dogs in a muzzle have a bite history, some have them on to prevent that in the first place. Sometimes the muzzle is more for the HUMAN than the DOG because it allows them to feel more confident. Big dogs, small dogs, and all breeds and sizes need muzzles sometimes. It is not a breed specific tool.

Muzzled dogs are GOOD DOGS WITH GREAT HUMANS who are setting their dog up to not fail. Judging a dog in a muzzle and their owner is the same as judging someone for wearing a helmet. They are choosing safety and being proactive and it takes WORK to get your dog to a level that they are happily working and walking around in a muzzle so kudos to the humans and dogs I work with who put that time in to better their dogs lives.

If you see a dog in a muzzle, don’t stare, don’t ask rude questions, just say “nice job, great looking dog!” And carry on. Believe me, you will have just made that humans day.”

I sometimes get asked why I charge a cancellation fee so when a colleague of mine posted this it summed it up rather concisely.

😤🚫 NO SHOWS & CANCELLATIONS 🚫😤

There is nothing more damaging (or frustrating!) to a self employed person than people who don’t show up for their appointment, or people who cancel at the very last minute.

When we book your dogs in for their appointments, they are booked in for a time slot of anywhere between 1 and 3 hours depending on their breed, if you don’t bring your dog to their appointment, we cannot fill that time meaning that we’re not only sitting around twiddling our thumbs (feeling VERY cross!), we’re also NOT EARNING.

The average groomer loses somewhere between £100-£400 per month in no shows and late cancellations. PER MONTH!! 😱

Imagine having that amount of money taken out of your wages each month and think about how that would affect you. It’s a huge loss!

Despite how it may appear and as much as we adore our job, we are not here to play with your dogs all day, we are here to earn a living and we can only do that if you bring your dogs to their appointments hence why the cancellation fees apply.

As always, thank you for reading and thank you to my clients for being awesome 💜🐾

Good dental hygiene is as important for our pets as it is for us humans, as gum disease can leave pets prone to infections that can affect other vital organs, such as the heart, liver and kidneys.

This is why it’s important to regularly check your pet’s mouth and to also keep up a good dental hygiene schedule - maintaining your pet’s oral health is the best way to prevent the development of gum disease.

❄️ WHAT IS FROSTBITE? ❄️

Frostbite is damage caused to the skin and other tissues as a result of prolonged exposure to extreme cold.

❄️ WHO IS AT RISK OF FROSTBITE? ❄️

Any pet who spends a prolonged period exposed to extremely cold weather has the potential to be affected by frostbite. However, there are some factors which may heighten the risk of your dog getting frostbite:

• Medical conditions that affect blood flow
• Wet fur
• Short hair
• Small in size
• Illness
• Old age

❄️ HOW DOES FROSTBITE OCCUR? ❄️

Prolonged contact with cold temperatures causes the body to close blood vessels that are near the skin to preserve a stable core body temperature.

Blood vessels start to narrow or constrict. Sometimes, this protective mechanism can reduce blood flow to critically low levels in some areas of the body (particularly the extremities). The combination of cold temperatures and reduced blood flow can allow the tissues to freeze, causing severe tissue injury.

You should immediately contact your vet so that they can give the correct advice for your particular situation.

I often get asked about this and seeing as we’ve had snow over night I thought I’d share

When considering walking your dog in cold weather, there’s a pretty simple rule to live by – if it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for your dog.

But like humans, every dog is different. Where some dogs seem to be made for snow and wet weather, others can struggle in even the slightest of chills. The vet experts at Joii have given some guidelines to help you decide if you should brave the elements or stay in the warmth.

Just looking at the temperature on the thermometer (or if you’re like us, on your phone’s weather app) isn’t enough, you also need to take into account wind chill, wet conditions (rain or damp ground) and how sunny the day is. If in doubt, keep your walk short or skip it all together if your dog can toilet in the garden instead.

🍁AUTUMN DOG ADVICE - CONKERS🍁

On crisp autumn walks your dog may come across conkers that have fallen from a horse chestnut tree, but these shiny seeds are poisonous to dogs!

🔸WHAT IS A CONKER?🔸
A conker is a shiny, round, red-brown seed from a horse chestnut tree (Aesculus hippocastanum). Conkers are often found on the ground in autumn after dropping from the tree encased in a green or brown spiky fruit.

🔸HOW MANY DOES A DOG HAVE TO EAT?🔸
The amount of toxin in each conker is different, so it’s impossible to know the amount of conkers that your dog would need to eat to make them unwell

Conkers actually taste quite bitter, so it’s unlikely that most dogs will eat enough to make them very ill. But if enough is eaten it can produce more serious effects, and in rare cases can be deadly.

How your dog is affected by this toxin will also depend on their size, when they last ate, how much they chew up the conker and if they have any other health issues.

🔸OTHER RISKS🔸
Poisoning is not the only risk from these seeds. Conkers are large and hard and could cause your dog to choke on them or could block their stomach or gut.

🔸HOW CAN I PREVENT THIS?🔸
If your dog is prone to eating conkers, then keep them on a lead when going for autumn walks (especially in areas where you know there are conker trees). When walking near ‘conker trees’, bring along a ball or a chew toy to help keep their mouths occupied.

🔸WHEN SHOULD I CALL THE VET?🔸
If your dog has eaten conkers, then you should contact your vet for advice. If you’re unsure whether your dog has eaten them, but they’re showing some of the common signs, then you should speak to your vet. Never try to make your dog sick as this can be dangerous and may cause other problems.

❗️RAWHIDE❗️

POSSIBLY THE MOST DANGEROUS DOG TREAT ON THE PLANET!

The chews are made from cattle or horse hides and their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white “pure” look and remove the rancid smell. Now comes the pretty festive colours and the glue to form cute shapes.

On testing, these chews have shown traces of arsenic, mercury, chromium and formaldehyde.
If that wasn`t bad enough they regularly cause intestinal blockages, poisoning from chemical residue and choking. The chews go slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog.

Leave them in the shop or if some well meaning person buys them for your dog put them safely away and then dispose in the bin!

Taking a chance

I’ve always loved animals from a very early age, I was never into dolls and fairytale castles I was much more of a tomboy however I did have a pram that my poor cat used to put up with me pushing him around in it and used to run and jump onto my lap with a crook of my finger, he was my boy and lived to the ripe old age of 17 so most of my young life.

Anyhow, what got me on this journey....... being made redundant and after the initial panic of ‘What am I gonna do!?’ I sat back and thought about what I love and of course furry family came to mind and then the little spark of an idea of....what if?

So here I am, starting my own dog grooming business which is a super scary prospect but one I truly hope survives in these difficult times, as having you trust me with your fur baby is such an honour and one I don’t take lightly. This is the best job in the world having furry cuddles and having you pick your dogs up looking super swanky and smart and going away with a smile on your face is a dream come true.

Thanks for reading and thanks again for trusting me with your fur babies. xoxoxo
