I've been very quiet on social media lately. Being totally honest everything is just feeling difficult right now with the loss of Jaffa. I've been forgetting to take photos and videos of sessions, and haven't really had the brain power to put towards any sort of valuable content.

So unfortunately there's not any photos from this workshop, but here are the latest group of dogs from their Active Search Introduction workshop where they all had a blast 😄🐾

It was a fantastic afternoon, and I loved watching each and every dog. Thank you all for coming along and being such a great group to teach 🥰

Happy International Women's Day!

The vast majority of people who choose to come and do scent sports with me are women. Now this could be because perhaps women are more likely to choose to do these types of activities with their dogs, or it could be because less men want to train with me because of my gender, I won't ever know for sure.

The gender gap is real, in so many ways. But instead of looking at the challenges I want to give a massive big up to all the women who show up consistently to give time to their dogs and put their trust into me. It means a lot. Thank you 💞

Ps sorry if I missed you out, going back through photos is hard work 😄

The latest lot of scent dogs after completing their introduction to scent detection block 🙌😁

Absolutely amazing work from everyone, dedication to training in between classes which was so clear to see because they were 🔥 on their last class 🐾

Can't wait to see you all again and hope the dogs enjoy their searching in the meantime 😄🩶

Isn't this just the cutest presentation of a certificate 🤩

Tessa and Berry completing their level 1 award. Berry was initially very cautious of the strange people running away with her food, and with a history of gundog training her auto response was to come into heel. It's actually sort of funny looking back at the beginning of her journey because if you seen her now you would not have guessed that she was like that.

She now comes out the car and walks up to everyone with a happy tail and smiling face checking everyone out so she can find them later 😆

I always find it a huge privilege when a dog like Berry comes and asks for a bit of physical touch especially when they offer you their side and back. She's such a sweetheart.

Elizabeth and Breagha completing their Level 1 award last week 🙌😁

I've known Breagha since she was a wee tot and this always makes watching them progress that little bit sweeter. There's been a lot of work on line handling as Breagha is the type of spaniel that will weave in and out of trees before you know it's happening, but Elizabeth has been learning to read her so much quicker to prepare for her natural trailing behaviour.

Great work from this team and can't wait to see them continue 🐾💞

"Grief, I've learned, is really just love. It's all the love you want to give, but cannot. All of that unspent love gathers in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in the hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go" - Jamie Anderson.

To our wee Jaffa Cakes. We weren't ready for this. Everything just happened so fast, one day you're here and the next you're gone. It doesn't make sense, it wasn't supposed to happen this way, and we miss you more than words can describe.

You have seen me at my best, my worst, my most vulnerable, and my most courageous. You literally seen me through my 20s in all the phases of growing up, and we grew up together. You are the reason I pivoted career paths all those years ago. I wanted to be the best I could be for you, to help you through life, to become the best team we could be. And I think we did that Jaffa, through all the challenges and things I could have done so differently, I think in end we were a great team.

I have so much more I want to say to you, but right now it's all just so raw. Writing this is taking all of my strength. I hope one day soon I can look back at all the memories and feel more joy than sadness. So for now, let's share one of the last photos of you and Jacob on a walk, drooling because you know a snack is coming your way!

Jaffa, we miss you so much, and we love you even more. Sleep tight poppet 🧡

Finn, what a boy. He's got bucket loads of drive, and is naturally quite independent, which can have a lot of benefits but if you have one of those you'll know it's not always the easiest of handling. I really enjoy watching him trail because there's times where he's more Springer and times where the Cocker comes out. Kathleen and Finn are becoming a fantastic team and it's been great to be a part of their journey. Level 1 award complete and onto the next 😎🐾

I've made another video on YouTube. I've always liked making the longer videos but as reels became so popular it seemed everyone couldn't be bothered watching more than 30 seconds of content. ⏳

But I would class myself as a philosophical person and it's always been more challenging to make a short 1 minute video than it has been to write 1000 words or speak for 30 minutes about something.

So while I'll continue doing shorts because that's the way most people want to see stuff, I'm hoping the longer form videos will be useful for others like me.

I think all my videos are going to be pretty niche, because I'm not going to show you how to FIX YOUR DOG but instead get you thinking.

If you know anyone with a puppy and you think they might find this helpful, I would appreciate a share 😊🐾

Ps...no I've not a new puppy (I wish)...those in the know, will recognise who that is 🥰

Here are 5 reasons why you might be experiencing the puppy blues, and 5 tips to help you through the struggles of a new puppy. 👉 Are you in the comparison m...

Mila completing her DSWM level 1 award 🏆

Walking behind Mila on a trail makes me feel inadequate about my measley little muscles, it's like she's gone to the gym and it's always leg day!

She's an absolute rocket and she was one of the few dogs we quickly took any type of intensity away from the trails because it was the opposite of helpful 🚀

Marie continues to learn how to read a powerful and fast dog but each session it's getting easier and I love how it hasn't put Marie off coming to trail because Mila absolutely loves it!

Great team, always a pleasure 😁

The gorgeous Kasper earning his DSWM Level 1 Mantrailing award 👏

Kasper started out like every typical shepherd, bloody strong and excited 😆 without dampening his spirits we worked on slowing him down because the reality is he's got a human behind him trying not to die 🤣...

Shona has been a champ, and learning to handle him so much better and improving all the time on the difficult task of not falling over while also working on line handling and learning to read his body language, oh and also listening to me trying to coach all of the above too.

Always happy to have you guys on a session 😄

Sophia earned her level 1 today 😁 I swear she was chuffed but the photo shoot was after a Full Day Trailing and she was knackered 🤣

Sophia took a break from Mantrailing for a few months to have her beautiful puppies, and it's been great to see such a quick comeback from her. Trailing a100mph spaniel is not bloody easy, but Jennifer has been dedicated and has been learning to read her at her pace, while we also worked on slowing her down to like 97mph instead 🤩

Sometimes the forecast in this area looks bad and it actually turns out totally fine but it's good to be prepared. I'm heading out with mine soon and will take it as it comes 🍃

Wind is going to affect dogs in varied ways, but we can usually take an educated guess based on their normal behaviours (things they may typically struggle with).

The wind distorts noise and vision. Sounds of branches snapping, quick movement of objects in the environment, unable to see or hear things in the distance and have time to process.

The wind also has a tactilce feeling, whipping around and changing direction, incresing then decreasing in sp*ed, creating whirl pools of the ground texture (dust, sand, dirt, leaves).

On top of all this is the scent movement in the environment - remembering how important the dogs nose is to their connection with the world.

So what can you expect to see with your dogs?

Increase in arousal

Increased reactivity

Increased anxiety

Decreased confidence (especially for smaller breeds or dogs with pain / discomfort)

Decreased ability to pay attention, focus and process.

Increase in flirty behaviour (which could also be arousal and anxiety mixing)

Increase in prey / chase driven behaviour

Try to choose your walk location and time well, and keep it short combined with more activities in the house.

I've been thinking about this topic for a while now with conversations that tend to come up in all types of situations from general training to scent related training.

As much as skills to train your dog are super important, over the years I've realised that half the battle is working through the human half of the team and our thoughts, emotions, and struggles with confidence.

I'll be focusing on making more videos in 2025 to help the human half of dog training. If you think of a topic you'd like covered let me know in the comments 😊🐾

In this video I cover one of the reasons that I see low motivation when it comes to owners getting out there and doing the training, because they are constan...

Jaffa turned 12 yesterday, I can't quite believe we have a 12 year old dog. Things have been quite up and down recently, I just never know one day to the next how she's going to be, but overall I can happily say she's doing pretty well.

The goal for Jaffa this year is to try to get a weekend away every few months. Jaffa loves going to new places and adventuring around so we want to provide as much of that as possible.

I can't deny that I'm absolutely terrified of what's to come in the next few years. I feel like it was just yesterday that she was turning 1. Time is a strange thing. All I can do now is spend as much time as I can with my soul girl, and give her all the good things in life 💞

New blog post 😊

The title is to make the SEO happy because unfortunately 'bad dog behaviour' is such a common Google phrase. And if you want people to read your stuff you gotta put words in that will be picked up. But hopefully someone that thinks their dog is being bad will re-think if they stumble across this.

Enjoy and give me your thoughts 🐾

Are you restricting your dogs behaviour? You might be in for short term success but long term failure.

This is the story of a half toy poodle half cocker spaniel dog.

Most of you only ever see the half cocker spaniel. The t**t who tries to fly off walls, jumps out van windows, flips himself over to catch a ball, and generally doesn't give two 💩's about his own personal safety....

And then there's the half toy poodle who gets asked to go p*e but realises it's yucky on the ground and abandons ship to come back into the warmth 🙄

On Saturday a bunch of my clients had a fantastic walk to celebrate the end of the year with me. It's been my first whole year in business and it's been just amazing. Thanks for everyone who joined and we missed the bunch of you who sadly couldn't make it.

Now for a wee summery of the year...

Through the highs there have been lows, and with the successes have come mistakes. But ultimately I always strive to learn as much as possible and do my best for everyone, and I appreciate all my clients that know this. I've also learnt a lot about my self and what I can and cannot cope with at this point, and to avoid burnout I've made a big decision to focus a large percentage of my time on Scent Sports moving forward, only taking on a certain number of 1:1 general dog training clients. So if you see a change with how the website looks that is why 😊

I've never been one to assume that an entire year is going to be great, I barely know how my week is going to go most of the time, so I'm not going to say 2025 is going to be amazing. But I will say I am so excited about what I have planned and can't wait to see everyone again and meet lots of new people that want to give their dog a new experience.

Thank you Captured Moments by Catriona for taking the time to come and take photos of the walk, you're amazing 🤗
Thank you John Shackleton for always being there with ideas that I could never think of, funny messages when i need them and an ear when I need to vent 😆
You both started as clients and became a really good friends 🥰

Lastly and most important of all, thank you to all of YOU for supporting me this year, I literally wouldn't have been able to make the changes I have if it weren't for all of you. Seriously, I appreciate it more than you'll all know.

Have a great new year and I'll see you in January ❤️
