What are those leashes? If you see a Kishu Ken in the ring in the USA, you may see them shown on the traditional style of show leash. These leads are widely used in Japan, often made of silky braid, and include a tassel at the end. These leads are colored to compliment the color of the dog.

The National Kishu Ken Club advocates for education and emulation of the parent culture here in the USA - that is to say we want to bring the show and breed culture set by our enthusiast and breeder peers in Japan to the AKC. Thus, many exhibitors will opt to show on these leashes so when our friends in Japan see our conformation photos and dogs being shown in the USA, they see things familiar to them.

This is a nod of respect to tell our friends that we care about how they present their dogs and would like to do the same. In a rare breed good relations are monumentally important and can be built with the smallest gestures.

Plus, they're very nice to hold for a long day or weekend of shows.

Association of Nihon Ken member and breed ambassador Lauren is raising money to support her breeder in Ukraine right now. Anyone who has come to our events and met Yokai the Shiba will know what a wonderful dog, ambassador and credit to his breeder he is.

Olga of Go You Djenima Kennel is based right in Dnipro, and needs fuel for kennel generators and food to keep her dogs safe and fed.

“Yokai’s breeder Olga is based in Dnipro, this is about 185 miles from the Russian borders and has already been hit, for context that’s about as close as Sheffield is to London. She needs fuel to run the kennel generators and food for the dogs and needs to stock up on both. She will also be helping local residents and refugees. Olga loves her dogs and I can’t for one second imagine she’ll be leaving them any time soon even though many people are currently leaving their homes, plus there’s likely too many to move. Please give whatever you can and I’ll make sure it gets sent across to help them out, if you aren’t able to use the western Union or international transfer methods.”

Please everyone who can!

Today at 5 am Russia started a war against Ukraine. Now it's time, dear friends, to apply to you for financial assistance to the nursery in connection with the outbreak of the war against Ukraine. Now we need a lot of gasoline to keep the kennel generator working, we also plan to buy 1 ton of dog food, we plan to buy food for the refugee camp that is now arriving in the areas that are prone to rocket attacks

Yoshi was initially imported to help with breed preservation for the Kishu Ken here in the U.K.

Unfortunately since his arrival, some behavioural issues have popped up which show that he would be much more suited to a home with no other dogs.

This is an excellent chance to get involved with the Nihon Ken here in the U.K. with a great dog who in any other circumstances would not be in this situation.
I know Sam, his current owner, is devastated with this decision but it is what’s best for Yoshi to live a long life without the stress of other household dogs upsetting him.

We are reaching out to our UK based members today, to ask a huge favour. We are not asking for money, just a little of your time!

Many of you may have heard of the new laws the government are trying to pass under the guise of animal welfare, which will ban the import of puppies to the UK under 6 months of age. Their reasons for this new legislation is to 'stop puppy smuggling'.
(more info: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-powers-to-tackle-cruel-puppy-smuggling-move-step-closer)

This legislation will have a potentially catastrophic detrimental effect on the continuation of rare breed preservation in the UK. This will not only affect the Nihon Ken, but, perhaps over decades, will impact the genetic diversity of even common breeds as the ability to import new lines will be restricted to those who have the resources to import adult dogs.

Not only will those wanting to import need to find a breeder willing to give up 6 months of their time to raising a puppy they are not keeping, but the new owner will face challenges relating to bringing over an older adolescent dog, including possible issues with bonding, integrating into a household with resident dogs, fear periods and learning a whole new routine. While these are not insurmountable problems for those who are already familiar with importing, it will provide yet more barriers to those wanting to add any uncommon breed to their family.

With this in mind, we have drafted a letter which can be printed and sent to your MP (or emailed), bringing up these issues and asking them to consider speaking out against this legislation when it is presented to the house.

We (the Association of Nihon Ken) release this into the public domain in the hopes that you, as individuals, and other breed clubs may join together in an attempt to at least enlighten our Members of Parliament to the effects this legislation may have on rare breeds in the UK, a self-professed 'nation of dog lovers' and home to the world's biggest pedigree dog show.

We are happy for this letter to be used as a template by any other breed club wishing to add their voice to this battle.

Thank you for your time and please feel free to share.

🦊 Meet the new kid on the block! 🦊

Next weekend (31st July and 1st August) we will be attending the All About Dogs Show at the Newbury Showground as part of the Association of Nihon Ken [UK]. This will be Tsume's first big event and his introduction to becoming a good breed ambassador.

We hope to have Hokkaido (Satsuki, Momo and Tsume), Kai (Akiko), Kishu (Bushi and Yoshie) and Shiba (Inari, Yokai, Okuri, Pup and Freddie) attending at various points across the weekend! So if you're interested in meeting some of the Nihon Ken breeds, this is a great opportunity to see more than one in the same place. Please note that the Kishu will only be attending on Saturday so if you want to meet them, make sure you book your tickets for Saturday.

All About Dogs have been kind enough to provide us with a special discount code! Use NIHONKEN21 to get 20% off your tickets when purchasing online - this includes both the Newbury and Norfolk events.

As well as meeting us, there's plenty of stuff for everyone to do, both four legged and two legged, with have-a-go activites, food and drink and of course shopping! It's also looking like the weather will be a little kinder for the dogs over the weekend, which is a big relief.

Come and say hello :D we'd love to meet you!

What do you want to see us post?

We are hoping to up our social media game a little, instead of just posting when we have events, but we want to know what our community want to see!

So far our thoughts are history posts, featuring some historic dogs with information from the Nihon Ken Network archives, or perhaps interviews with U.K. breeders and ambassadors, or spotlights on our individual breed ambassador dogs/Nihon Ken who are living in the U.K.

Please let us know what you think and what you want to see!

Kaiju Kennels have been sharing some wonderful questions and answers about their work in the breed. In particular, this question is something that gets asked a lot and this is a fantastic answer. We need more young people stepping into these breeds.
