LLANTRISANT COMMON - ALABAMA ROT

Llantrisant Town Trust is warning dog owners of the potential dangers involved in walking their animals on Llantrisant Common at the current time.

Following investigation by Llantrisant Town Trust (the charitable body that manages the lands and rights of the Freemen of Llantrisant), working with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Environmental Health Department and Natural Resources Wales we can confirm several potential cases of Alabama Rot amongst dogs who have visited the Common recently.

Alabama Rot is a potentially fatal disease which damages dogs’ blood vessels. This can cause skin sores and sometimes goes on to cause kidney failure.

We have been informed that a dog affected by Alabama Rot may have contracted it on Llantrisant Common has passed away.

We strongly advise that dog owners refrain from walking their animals on Llantrisant Common at this present time.

A timely reminder to all pet owners - DO NOT give your pet dog or cat any of your Christmas ham.

This poor dog pictured is Gordie - in 2017 he ate an ENTIRE 2.2KG Christmas ham. His owners brought him into the vet for help.

"Christmas ham and ham bones are a huge no no,” the Animal Referral & Emergency Centre said.

“The fat and salt content of this delicious Christmas treat will reek havoc on the gastrointestinal system of our beloved fury family members."

Chocolate, grapes, nuts and fruit cake also need to be kept out of their reach 🍫🥜🍰🚫
