Last week we had the pleasure of this cutie staying with us for the day 😍
Bear had his castration procedure and all went well, he was a little star ⭐️ Before his surgery he enjoyed a little treat off one of our nurses 🍌 and as you can see he loved it! 💛 He was discharged later that day after LOTS of cuddles and kisses 💋 and has already been back for his post operative check where everything was perfect 😍

For the final day of Rabbit Awareness Week the focus is on companionship 🐰🐰

Why does your rabbit need a companion?

🔸 They are highly social animals – this means that they need company from other rabbits too 🥰
🔸 It helps them feel safe - having a friend means they can warn each other of danger
🔸 They love to eat together
🔸 Bonded rabbits will groom each other
🔸 They will lie down together and keep each other warm 💛

We hope you are enjoying Rabbit Awareness Week so far and are finding our tips useful 🐰💛

The topic for day 4 is something that is often misunderstood - environment!

Rabbits require plenty of enrichment in their accommodation to enable them to perform natural behaviours 🐰

✔️ Forage boxes allow them to dig which rabbits LOVE!
✔️ Use puzzles and toy feeders for their hay or nugget allowance - this keeps them entertained and will prevent them from eating their nuggets in one go!
✔️ Platforms/ramps/tunnels - rabbits love to explore and using different levels will encourage them to keep fit too!

A common misunderstanding with rabbit owners is often how much space they require! Check out the link below for the RWAF guidelines and please ensure your bunny has enough space! 💛

The topic for day 3 is behaviour! 😍

Rabbits have amazing personalities and often display their emotions in a few different ways 🐰💛

🔸 Binky - This is when your rabbit jumps into the air and twists their body! This is always great to see and indicates they are happy!
🔸 Biting - If you get a small nip from your rabbit, this could be a sign that they want your attention, or that they’re giving you a warning. If your rabbit bites you hard, this could be a sign of fear or stress.
🔸 Ears on alert - When your rabbit’s ears are up, something has most likely got their attention! When their ears are back, they’re very relaxed.
Grinding their teeth
🔸 When rabbits grind their teeth, listen out for how loud they are - gentle, soft grinding (like a purring cat) is a sign of contentment 💛 If you hear your rabbit grinding their teeth loudly, they’re most likely pain and need to see a vet!
🔸 Licking you or each other - a sign of affection 💛
🔸 Thumping - Rabbits thump to communicate that there’s danger around. It can also be a sign that they’re annoyed and often means stop doing what you’re doing! 😂

It is always important to contact us if you do ever notice any changes in your rabbit's behaviour as this can indicate illness 😞

Day 2 of Rabbit Awareness Week is focusing on 'health' 🐰

In the image below 2 issues are pictured - dental pain and flystrike 😞
With rabbits, dental issues are usually caused by a diet lacking in fibre to promote normal tooth wear - this is why hay is such an important part of their diet! 😊 The grinding action in which rabbits chew fibrous foods like hay helps to keep their teeth at a normal, healthy length!

Did you know ❓ a rabbit's teeth are known as 'open rooted', which means they'll continue to grow throughout their entire life! This is why the wrong type of diet will result in painful, overgrown teeth! 🐰

Flystrike is a painful and often fatal condition - It happens when flies lay their eggs on your rabbit, which then hatch out into maggots. Maggots from blowflies - bluebottles and green bottles, are the most dangerous ❗️ They can eat into the flesh within 24 hours which can cause death in a very short time 💔

Checking your rabbit's bum every day is important, particularly through warmer months, and be sure to keep their accommodation and litter box clean!

It is also important to use a preventative treatment for flystrike, and we are more than happy to offer more advice on this if you need guidance 😊

Rabbit Awareness Week 🐰💛

Today is the first day of RAW and the topic for day 1 is DIET! 🥦
A rabbit's diet has a HUGE impact on their quality of life and general health, which is why it is so important they are fed appropriately 😊

A rabbit's diet should consist of:
✔️ 85% hay or grass
✔️ 10% leafy green veg
✔️ 5% extruded pellets or nuggets (approximately an egg-cup full)

❌ Muesli diets often result in selective feeding
❌ Things like carrots 🥕 and fruit 🍓 should only be offered as treats due to their high sugar content

We have lots of useful information regarding what is suitable for your bunny here at Sheffield, so please feel free to give us a call if you require any guidance! 😊

The RWAF guide to rabbit care will be available to collect from reception this week, so why not pop in and grab yourself a free copy! 😍

Arthritis is very common in our rabbits, but often goes un-diagnosed 😔 Please don't hesitate to call if you are concerned your bunny may have OA - we have a questionnaire here at Sheffield to help in diagnosing this condition as they are very good at hiding pain, therefore rely on you to spot the signs. 🐰💙

There are ways to manage OA in rabbits, including supplements, pain relief and adjustments to their accommodation. 🥰

Last week we had this beautiful little ball of fluff Tutu in to be neutered 😍
Her surgery went well and she went home later that day 🥰
We always aim to make their environment as stress free as possible, which is why you can see Tutu enjoying her little hide ✨💛

There are many reasons why we recommend neutering your rabbits ⬇️
✔️ vital for bonding - especially in mixed s*x pairs
✔️ prevent unwanted litters - rabbit pregnancies only last around 31 days and they are able to mate again immediately after giving birth!
✔️ Un-spayed females are at very high risk of uterine cancer and pyometra (infection of the uterus/womb)
✔️ reduce aggression

These are just a few of the reasons! 🐰

It is also worth considering how your rabbits will react to a busy household around Christmas too, as this can cause some stress!🐰
